शहडोल जिले का इतिहास महाभारत काल से जुड़ा हुआ है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि शहडोल और सोहागपुर क्षेत्र महाभारत राजा विराट का राज्य क्षेत्र हुआ करता था। साथ ही पांडवों ने यहाँ अज्ञात वास का कुछ समय भी व्यतीत किया था। स्थानीय लोगों का कहना है कि इस स्थान पर बहुत अधिक तालाब हुए करते थे इसी कारण इसे सहस्त्र डोल कहा जाता था जो कि अब सहस्त्र डोल से शहडोल बन गया। शहडोल जिले की सीमाओं पर उमरिया, डिंडोरी, अनूपपुर और रीवा जिले की सीमाएं लगती हैं। शहडोल एक पहाड़ी जिला है, शहडोल जिला खनिज संसाधनों की दृष्टि से अत्यंत समृद्ध है। जिले में पाए जाने वाले खनिज कोयला, अग्नि मिट्टी, गेरू और संगमरमर हैं। सोहागपुर कोलफील्ड राज्य के राजस्व में एक बड़ा योगदान देता है। जिले का महत्वपूर्ण कोयला क्षेत्र सोहागपुर कोयला क्षेत्र है।

Shahdol District is a district of Madhya Pradesh state in east central India. It old name was matsya raj or virat in the name of great king maharaja virat With a total area of 6,205 square kilometer and a population of 10,66,063. Shahdol is an important district of Madhya Pradesh. The town of Shahdol is the district headquarters. The district is also a Division. Some of the districts in this division are Annupur and Umaria.
The Virateshwara Temple in Sohagpur Vangana is the most important tourist destination of Shahdol and a structural masterpiece. The district extends 110 km from east to west and 170 km from north to south.

Virateshwar temple of Lord Shiv in Sohagpur Vanganga, Shahdol. It is said that Kalchuri King Maharaja Yuvraj Deva had got it built between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D. to present it to the Acharya of Golkaki Math. Many Archaeologists consider this temple as the temple of Karn Deva. Temple has height of about 125 feet and provides a glimpse of Kalchuri Age architecture. The temple is place to visit when one goes to Shahdol a district with richness of natural wealth of coal and minerals.
