Crossing into Zambia???????? by car | Katima Mulilo to Kalabo

Crossing into Zambia???????? border by car | Katima Mulilo to Kalabo

In this video I finally cross the border from Namibia into Zambia at Katima Mulilo. Ill share some info on the 10 step process involved. Crossing the border into Zambia by car is a tedious process. Come prepared and the process will be a little easier.

From there I drive up to Mongu and then Kalabo for my visit to the Liuwa Plain National Park. Along the way I stay at the Kabula Tiger lodge, Mongu Country lodge (Mongu) and Golden lodge (Kalabo).

Based on my vehicles specifications, this was my experience:

Step 1: Port health. Check your vaccination certificate and complete a health arrival form for you.

Step 2: You, the health arrival form and passport proceed to immigration. Where they stamp both your passport and your health form. I am eligible for 90days at a time, but border officials are only allowed to authorize a 30 day stay. Entry permits need to be extended inside the country if you intend on staying longer.

Step3: Return the stamped health form to the lady at port health desk. No need to queue again, go straight to the front and hand it to her.

Step 4: Proceed to Interpol desk. I waited an hour and 10mins for this person to rock up, and hand them your passport, vehicle registration paperwork and police clearance (done in your home country)

First they compare the documentation against one another and then against your actual engine and chassis no on the vehicle.

If they are happy, they stamp your police clearance, and you fill in their book. You cannot proceed without that stamp.

Step 5: Proceed to customs (this is the only office outside the main building) for your temporary import permit. Nothing to do here. Hand in all the documents you have collected thus far and submit. Wait about 10mins, go and check the vehicle again as per your paperwork and all good. The TIP is only valid for 30days. No payments.

Step 6: Buy 3rd party insurance for your intended period of stay. I paid K522 for 3 months. You receive a disc that goes onto your windscreen. The lady even cuts it out for you , but it feels like I was overcharged according to the research I did beforehand.

Step 7: Proceed to a different customs desk a few cubicles away. Hand in all documentation. Provide name, email, telephone no and size of motor vehicle engine. They calculate your carbon tax dues. I paid K240 for my 2000 2.7i Toyota Hilux pick up.

Step 8: Proceed to Road Tax cubicle. They want to know how long you will be here and how far you intend to go. I think it is a flat rate…so not sure why they asked. I told them Ill be visiting all parts of Zambia and this is actually indicated on the paperwork. My total was US$38 and can only be paid in this currency. No credit card machines.
This is where I became impatient. The US$ I had was a bit used/worn and they refused to accept it. Not torn and taped back together, but normal wear and tear.

Step 9: Proceed to the exit gate. Before you reach it. Pay the local council tax K50. I believe this allows me to use the local roads. Judging from the size of the potholes, it is obviously not used to maintain the roads. Lol. Keep your receipt, there are roadblocks and people ask for it.

Step 10: The final exit gate. Submit all your paperwork, the guard checks that your disc is on your windscreen. It’s a quick verification that everything was completed. Then you are free to explore Zambia.

The entire process took 2.5hours. Just remember to renew your immigration permit and TIP before 30 days.

Tracks4Africa Self Drive Guide Book - Zambia

Tracks4Africa Self Drive Guide Book - Zambia

So, what is so special about the Tracks4Africa guide books?
These are not guides written by armchair travellers or the personal experience of one person, but the combined experiences of a whole community of travellers. The T4A community travel far and wide – not by luxury bus or safari vehicle but on their own wheels. Sometimes they travel in groups and sometimes as lone rangers, but they always travel by motorbike, sedan or 4WD, therefore this guide is specifically aimed at self-drive travellers.

Our 2nd edition features an atlas section of Zambia, and suggested routes for first time visitors.

If you are a self-drive tourist, there are five things that you need to know when you are on the road:
1. Where to sleep.
2. Where to get fuel.
3. What to see and do.
4. Where to buy supplies.
5. Where to go in case of an emergency.

Zambezi River flows through a town called Sesheke in Zambia.

Powerfull currents beneath the Seshske Bridge. Not a place to mess about because theres huge repitles in the waters.

I was warned about this road in Zambia!

I had just entered Zambia from Namibia and had spend the night in a small campground right on the Zambezi river in the border town Sesheke.
I was about to take on possibly the worst road in Africa, the M10 from Sesheke to Kazungula. People had warned me about it - but I get so many warnings all the time, and often I end up thinking Ah, was that it. But this one was different! It actually lived up to its reputation.

In this video you will also see how I behave when I think I am meeting dishonest police officers. In this situation I chose to be a bit b*itchy. Just me trying to survive travelling alone. Still don't know if the council levy is supposed to be paid for motorcycles or not.
No matter, the officers were actually very nice.

Enjoy the ride!

Kazungula Ferry between Zambia and Botswana in southern Africa

Video of Kazungula Ferry, operated between Zambia and Botswana in southern Africa.

#Kazunugula #Botswana #Zambia

The Kazungula Ferry was a pontoon ferry across the 400-metre-wide Zambezi River between Botswana and Zambia. It was one of the largest ferries in south-central Africa, having a capacity of 70 tonnes (69 long tons; 77 short tons). The service was provided by two motorised pontoons and operated between border posts at Kazungula, Zambia and Kazungula, Botswana.

It linked the Livingstone-Sesheke road (which connects to the Trans–Caprivi Highway at Katima Mulilo and forms part of the Walvis Bay Corridor) to the main north–south highway of Botswana through Francistown and Gaborone to South Africa, and also to the Kasane-Victoria Falls road through Zimbabwe. It served the international road traffic of three countries directly (Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana) and of three more indirectly (Namibia, South Africa and DR Congo).

Whether Botswana and Zambia actually shared a common border, or whether the ferry was illegally crossing into Namibian or Rhodesian territory, was the subject of dispute. In 1970, South Africa (which at the time occupied Namibia) informed Botswana that there was no common border between Botswana and Zambia, claiming that a quadripoint existed. As a result, South Africa claimed, the Kazungula Ferry, which links Botswana and Zambia at the quadripoint, was illegal. Botswana firmly rejected both claims. There was actually a confrontation and shots were fired at the ferry; some years later, the Rhodesian Army attacked and sank the ferry, maintaining that it was serving military purposes.

In 2003 the ferry was the site of a disaster when a severely overloaded Zambian truck capsized one of the pontoons and 18 people drowned. The accident was blamed on the lack of weighbridges in Zambia to check the weight of trucks.

In August 2007, the governments of Zambia and Botswana announced a deal to construct the Kazungula Bridge at the site to replace the ferry. The existence of a short boundary of about 150 metres between Zambia and Botswana was apparently agreed to during various meetings involving heads of state and/or officials from all four states in the 2006-10 period and is clearly shown in the African Development Fund project map. This matches the US Department of State Office of the Geographer depiction in Google Earth. The planned route for the new bridge crosses this boundary without entering Zimbabwe or Namibia.

Zimbabwe already has a bridge into Zambia at Victoria Falls, 70 km from Kazungula. Namibia already has a bridge into Zambia at Katima Mulilo about 150 km upriver. The bridge provides a direct connection between Zambia and Botswana. However, there is still no direct connection between Namibia and Zimbabwe, nor is one planned. Traffic from Namibia to Zimbabwe has to cross to Zambia at Katimo Mulilo, and then from Zambia into Zimbabwe at the Victoria Falls; or over Ngoma bridge into Botswana, and thence at the Kazungula Road crossing into Zimbabwe. In practice, though, there is very little such traffic along this route, or demand. Most traffic between Namibia and Zimbabwe goes through Botswana via Maun, which is a considerably shorter route.

For those travelling from South Africa to Zambia's copperbelt or Lusaka by road, routes through Zimbabwe are several hundred kilometres shorter.

Border crossings with a motorcycle in Africa is always a bit hectic! You either love it or hate it!

Day 710! I was crossing from Katima Mulilo in Namibia to Sesheke in Zambia. Crossing borders is always connected with a certain level of excitement - and a bit of fear! You never know what you are gonna get in terms of offices, fixers, money, paperwork, procedures - and you never know if you will get 30 days or just a week.
But as much as I am always a bit nervous, I also have this weird love for border crossings. There's always something funny going on! This time money fixers got pulled out by the police! I usually expect the process to take a full day - because that way, I will not get frustrated when it takes several hours.

On this day, I was looking for a spark plug in the morning. And when that developed into making new friends, time went by, and I got to the border a bit too late.

???????? The Great North Road in Zambia ????????

From Nakonde (starting 40 km outside because of terrible road and dust) to Mpika (ca 380 km). Total time: 9-10 hours. There are some newly upgraded parts (50-100 km excellent tarmac by Chinese), 30 km of diversions along the roadworks. 200 km of old tarmac with terrible potholes ????. The last 100 km (turn off to North Luangwa NP - 60 km north of Mpika) and finally a brand new 4 lane highway????
