10 Things To Do in Brunei on your Summer Vacation!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Brunei, the smallest nonisland country outside Europe, is a peaceful Muslim country blessed with vast reserves of oil and beautiful rainforest full of wildlife.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, today we’re going to list the top 10 things to do in Brunei.

See some of southeast Asia’s most stunning mosques.

Brunei is famous in Southeast Asia for its gorgeous mosques and Islamic architecture. In Bandar Seri Begawan, both the Omar Ali Saifuddien and Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosques are huge attractions.

Experience the spectacular Bornean sunset.

Borneo’s sunsets are some of the most spectacular on Earth. The persistent clouds towards the horizon create a plethora of reds, oranges and purples as the sun dips out of sight. Just like the beaches in Sabah and Sarawak, you can witness this incredible phenomenon in Brunei. We suggest visiting either Penanjong or Muara Beach.

Get lost on the world’s largest floating village.

Stand on the waterfront and admire the sprawling stilted buildings across the river. Ferries and speedboats zoom between the mainland and Kampong Ayer. Known as the ‘Venice of the East’, the water village houses approximately 13,000 permanent residents.

Explore Brunei’s Virgin Rainforest.

Unlike neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia, Brunei’s jungle is free of deforestation. The off-shore oil reserves have made the Sultanate wealthy without the need to chop down trees for timber or palm oil plantations. Ulu Temburong National Park provides visitors with a chance to visit a section of this virgin rainforest. Only 1% is open with strictly regulated access. Visiting the national park offers one of the best ecotourism-related activities to do in Brunei.

Immerse yourself in the Culture of Brunei.

As of 2018, many of Brunei’s attractions are free to enter. Why not take advantage and explore some of the museums in Bandar Seri Begawan? We recommend the Royal Regalia to learn more about the Sultan and his extravagant lifestyle. The Brunei Museum covers natural history, ethnography, and exhibits on their British colonial days. Visiting museums might not feature on everyone’s list of things to do in Brunei, but it does offer a chance to learn about this little-known country.

Spot probosci's monkeys.

Probosci's monkeys, named after their unusual nose, are endemic to Borneo. The strange pot-bellied primates like to sit in the mangroves. If you’re in Bandar Seri Begawan, you can take a safari in search of the monkeys. Or head to Taman Persiaran Damuan Park and try to spot some in the trees on the river island.

Dine Like a Local at Pasar Gadong.

Pasar Gadong, or Gadong Market, sits a few kilometers north of the waterfront. Every day at 4:00 pm, dozens of stalls serve local food. Located under the tent-like roof, you can find a variety of rice and noodle-based dishes. Other favorites include satay (Malaysian-style kebabs), grilled and barbequed fish and beef. For an alternative dining experience compared to eating at a restaurant in Bandar Seri Begawan, check out the night market.

Experience Brunei’s Wild Side at Andulau Forest Reserve.

The Andulau Forest Reserve is approximately halfway between Sarawak’s Miri and Bandar Seri Begawan. With a network of muddy rivers, waterfalls, and hundreds of monkeys, a day trip to this part of the country promises to be a treat. Either visit as a stopover when passing between Miri and Brunei or take a tour from the capital. Tours usually combine a trip to the reserve by visiting the nearby Iban longhouses.

See the nodding donkeys.

Nodding donkeys are the strange contraptions used to extract underground oil. The small town of Seria along Brunei’s northern coast was the birthplace of the nation’s booming oil industry and is littered with the structures. A monument commemorates the production of Brunei’s billionth barrel of oil too. This isn’t one of the more conventional things to do in Brunei, but it will help you understand the industry driving the country’s wealth.

Shop to your heart’s content.

Because of Brunei’s lower tax levels, shopping for electronics and other products is often cheaper than in neighboring countries. With a relatively strong currency and a predominately middle-class population, the citizens demand the latest technology. If you’re in Bander Seri Begawan on a stopover, check out the malls and see what bargains you can find.

Make sure to subscribe to find out all the best things to do in your favorite city.
We research the best things to do with kids, at night, this weekend and more for each city around the world.

BILLIONTH BARREL MONUMENT - Seria, Brunei

This monument was built in 1991, and was commemorated by the Sultan of Brunei on 18 July 1991. The monument commemorates the production of the billionth barrel of oil produced by the onshore oil field in Seria.

The design is on an elevated square and there are five pipes that form an arch structure that is crowned by a gilded coat of arms. The five pipes are reminiscent of the Five Pillars of Islam and the floor tiles are designed according to Islamic models.

The monument is located near the S-1 well, the first well discovered in the Seria Oil Field. The well was discovered by Brunei Shell Petroleum in 1929. The monument is located 38 meters from S-1, which is now located on the beach. The only marker that remains of S-1 is a corroded steel bar.

The long pathway to the monument serves as a gallery of the arts and is painted by talented local artists in Brunei. The gallery displays a creative outlook of the oil industry, where visitors could admire the work of these talented artists. There are plans to revive these canvases every three to five years with new art. The monument itself shows beautiful scenery of the beach that is suitable for family leisure activities.
Finally for today, no visit to Seria would be complete without seeing a nodding donkey bust pumping oil.

The One Billionth Barrel Monument was constructed in 1991 and possesses its own significance, which is to commemorate the one-billionth barrel of crude oil production from the prolific Seria-1 field well. The monument was built close to Seria-1, which was the first commercially viable oil well to be drilled, in 1929. In fact, the whole country has not looked back since the drilling of Seria-1.

Art Thomya, a Thai singer/songwriter, with his local friends will show you around Brunei Darrusalam, one of the richest and most peaceful countries in the world.

+++++++++++++++

I flew direct from Bangkok to Banda Seri Begawan with Royal Brunei Airlines. The comfortable seat and entertainment on board made the 2 hours 45 min flight seem very shorter. Suddenly, we are here at one of the richest and most peaceful countries in the world - Brunei Darussalam.

I had such a warm welcome by Ricky, my new friend here, reminding me of the first time I was here with the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program.

Brunei Travel Guide - Asian Charming Time

Brunei Travel Guide - Asian Charming Time

The Sultanate of Brunei (Negara Brunei Darussalam) officialy Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace is a small but - thanks to natural gas and petroleum resources - very rich country located in Southeast Asia. It's surrounded by Malaysia and has two parts physically separated by Malaysia, almost being an enclave. Strategically located on the South China Sea, close to vital sea lanes linking Indian and Pacific Oceans, it has an exclusive economic fishing zone that extends as far as Louisa Reef in the southern Spratly Islands although it makes no public territorial claim to the offshore reefs.

The backbone of Brunei's economy is oil and gas and the Sultan of Brunei is, famously, one of the richest people in the world with an estimated personal wealth of around 40 billion dollars. Per capita GDP is far above most other developing countries, and substantial income from overseas investment supplements income from domestic production. The government provides for all medical services, housing, education and subsidizes daily needs like rice.

Regions and Cities of Brunei :

Brunei has four districts

Brunei and Muara
Heart of the country where the capital Bandar Seri Begawan is located.

Tutong
Lies under the coverage of the virgin forest, scattered small scale plantations.

Belait
Western-most district, also the centre of the country's petroleum industry. Seria town is a small oil town.

Temburong
Isolated eastern district, separated from the rest of country by the Sarawak district of Limbang.

Bandar Seri Begawan — the capital, sometimes known as Bandar or BSB for short.

Bangar — the tiny district capital of Temburong district.

Kuala Belait — town to catch transport to or from Miri, Sarawak.

Muara — main port of Brunei with passenger ferries to Labuan and Sarawak.

Seria — oil capital of Brunei, also known as Shelltown.

Tutong - full of virgin forest and the beauty of nature including Tasek Marimbun

Bruneians love to eat out and there are many excellent restaurants in Brunei serving a wide variety of cuisines, thanks to the large number of foreign workers in the country. Accommodation in Brunei was until recently famously expensive — there is still only one youth hostel in the entire country — but some reasonably cheap guesthouses can now be found here and there.

The Istana Nurul Iman is the world’s largest residential palace in occupation with 1788 rooms. The Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque is an oasis of tranquillity within the bustle of downtown Bandar. Completed in 1958 and named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, it was built with the craftsmanship that reflects classical Islamic architecture. The Royal Regalia Building is located in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan. It was built to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Sultan's accession to the throne in 1992.

Memorial Clock Monument built on 11th July 1959, to commemorate the visit of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Yang Di-Pertuan Agung of Malaysia. The $3-million Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery was built to provide visitors with a glimpse of Kampong Ayer's storied past while preserving part of Brunei's heritage.
