Calabria forms the tip of the boot in southern Italy and is washed by the Thyrrenian Sea on the west side and the Ionian Sea on the east side. The capital of the Calabria region in southern Italy is Catanzaro. In the center of Calabria are the mountains of the Apennines, which reach up to over 2,000 meters. With about 800 kilometers of coastline, Calabria is also an excellent destination for a beach or seaside vacation. But the region has more to offer: Mountain ranges such as the Aspromonte and national parks such as the Sila National Park invite visitors to hike and bike. One of my favorite summer destinations in Calabria region, in the south of Italy.

Scilla is the traditional site of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology.
The town has ancient origins that relate mainly to the period of the destruction of Troy and invokes the myths and legends of Ulysses with Scylla and Charybdis, of Homer and Dante Alighieri.

The town's name derives from the mythological figure of Scylla, a young nymph who refused Glauco's love. With this in mind, you can imagine how much beauty and history these small villages hold.

The oldest town of Scilla is Chianalea and derives its name from floor of the galley, but it is also called Acquagrande or Canalea, because small houses built directly on the rocks are separated from each other by small alleys, like channels , which descend directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Visiting the beautiful Italian seaside city of Scalea in Calabria
Our next adventure in Italy has us taking the train from Tropea to Scalea. Arriving in Scalea we first explore Torre Talao (Talao Tower) where we enjoy breathtaking views of Scalea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Next we take a walk along the beach and enjoy an afternoon drink at the lido. Scalea's old town/centro storico is absolutely magical as we climb stairs to the ruins of the Castello just in time for an amazing sunset and more views of Scalea. Our walk down is just as amazing, Scalea's centro storico is a special place.

Scalea Calabria Italy is a town and comune in the province of Cosenza in the southern Italian region of Calabria. The town of Scalea gets its name from its terraced hillside layout at the base of the Capo Scalea promontory. The old town is built on the heights and preserves the remains of an ancient wall, while the Scalea Marina center has recently been developed, with modern hotels, villas, and numerous beach bathing areas.All this can be seen in this Scalea Drone video.
Scalea has ancient roots that date back to the Greek colony of Enotria, with the Lucanian people occupying the area even before that. The Romans brought the first seaside villas, grand residences to get away from the city. However, during the Byzantine and Norman eras, the coast was abandoned, and the people moved uphill for protection, constructing a typical Medieval town with houses cuddled together, connected by steps and alleys, and surrounded by a defensive wall with grand towers.
Scalea Italy has grown into an agricultural area, producing grains, legumes, fruits, and wine, for which it received some attention. The historic center's alluring lanes meander up the hill, with steep streets connected by stairways, arched alleys, and small piazzas. The lower town grew primarily after WWII, with a sprawling modern beach resort that attracts visitors from all over Italy and Northern Europe. The crystal-clear seas and beautiful beaches, as well as a variety of water sports, beach activities, discos, and restaurants, make it a popular destination.

Calabria is known all over Europe for its amazing beaches and I love the fabulous lidos (beach clubs). They have showers, bathrooms, beds, umbrellas, snacks and fabulous restaurants. You never have to leave! Today we visited Lido L'Ancora and was a treasure!

Originally the rock of Torre Talao was an island. Then, following a landfill phenomenon, it became a peninsula and today it is completely dry.
The caves of the rock of Torre Talao were inhabited by prehistoric men.
Torre Talao was built in the 16th century . It was part of the coastal defensive system, against the incursions of the Turks, wanted by Charles V.
Torre Talao was built by the local people. Each citizen had to contribute to the construction of the Tower either with a sum of money or with the free service according to their abilities.
Tours are conducted daily by a volunteer staff, though a small donationis appreciated.
