SAYRE, PA - and The Valley including Athens, PA and Waverly, NY
Wikipedia calls it the Penn-York Valley, although few other sources use that moniker. This valley spans from the confluence of the Chemung and Susquehanna rivers to a few miles past the NY state line. Sayre is the principle municipality in the valley, and this tour will also take you to Athens, South Waverly, Athens Township, and the village of Waverly in New York.

There are two things Route 66 travelers should check out in Sayre: first, I look at (and go inside) the underground tunnel that is underneath Route 66. During the Mother Road's heyday, it was used as a crosswalk for children. Today, it is a community storm shelter. Then I take you to the outside of the Beckham County Courthouse, which was featured for a few seconds in the 1940 movie The Grapes of Wrath.
