Top 10 Best Things to Do in Minneapolis, Minnesota [Minneapolis Travel Guide 2023]

The city that gave the world Prince and Bob Dylan is one of the Midwest’s cultural and economic powerhouses and shares the Twin Cities metropolitan area with its near neighbor, Saint Paul. Few big cities are blessed with as much public parkland as Minneapolis. Water is everywhere, at 13 lakes, the roaring Mississippi River, wetlands, and waterfalls. What’s fantastic is that you can immerse yourself in this environment, hopping from lake to lake in the Chain of Lakes. Saint Anthony Waterfall on the Mississippi provided the impetus for the largest water-powered milling facility in the world in the 19th century.

Have you ever wondered what the smallest towns in Arkansas look like? Well I literally went to all four corners of the state to find these hidden gems. All of these towns are incorporated, so if you think there is a town missing then it's probably because it's unincorporated. This list was made from the 2020 US Census. All these towns range from 50 at the largest down to only 20 people at the smallest. Have you been to any? Some of them are small from natural decline, while others seem to be tiny by design. It was a lot of fun exploring around Arkansas and visiting all of them! Hopefully you'll find it interesting as well!

QUODDY HEAD STATE PARK
Quoddy Head State Park is a state park located four miles off Maine State Route 189 in Lubec, Maine on the easternmost point of land in the continental United States. On its 541 acres (219 ha), purchased by the state in 1962, the park features 5 miles (8 km) of hiking trails, extensive forests, two bogs, diverse habitat for rare plants, and the striking, red-and-white striped lighthouse tower of West Quoddy Head Light.

In 1808, West Quoddy Head Light became the easternmost lighthouse in the United States. Its light and fog cannon warned mariners of Quoddy's dangerous cliffs, ledges, and Sail Rock. Among the first to use a fog bell and later a steam-powered foghorn, this lighthouse greatly reduced shipwrecks in this foggy area, even as shipping increased. In 1858, the present red-and-white tower replaced the original. Monitored and serviced by the United States Coast Guard, its light still shines through its original third-order Fresnel lens. After automation in 1988, the light station became part of adjacent Quoddy Head State Park. The tower is closed, but visitors are welcome to enjoy the lighthouse grounds and explore the visitor center and museum run by the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association.

BELFAST, MAINE HISTORY
The area was once territory of the Penobscot tribe of Abenaki Native Americans, which each summer visited the seashore to hunt for fish, shellfish and seafowl. In 1630, it became part of the Muscongus Patent, which granted rights for English trading posts with the Native Americans, especially for the lucrative fur trade. About 1720, General Samuel Waldo of Boston bought the Muscongus Patent, which had evolved into outright ownership of the land, and was thereafter known as the Waldo Patent.[5]

Waldo died in 1759, and his heirs would sell the plantation of Passagassawakeag (named after its river) to 35 Scots-Irish proprietors from Londonderry, New Hampshire. Renamed Belfast after Belfast, Northern Ireland, it was first settled in 1770, and incorporated as a town in 1773. The village was mostly abandoned during the Revolution while British forces occupied Bagaduce (now Castine).[6] The British military burned Belfast in 1779, then held it for five days in September 1814 during the War of 1812

LUBEC, MAINE
Lubec is the easternmost municipality in the contiguous United States (see Extreme points of the United States) and is the closest continental location to Africa in the United States.

Located on a peninsula overlooking an excellent ice-free harbor, the town was first settled about 1775. Originally part of Eastport, it was set off and incorporated on June 21, 1811, and named for Lübeck, Germany. Following the War of 1812, Lubec was the site of considerable smuggling trade in gypsum, although principal industries remained agriculture and fisheries. By 1859, there was a tannery, three gristmills and nine sawmills; by 1886, there were also two shipyards, three boatbuilders and three sailmakers.

Bakersfield To Cambridge, Vermont, USA

Bakersfield is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The town history began when Joseph Baker of Westborough, Massachusetts, the namesake for the village, bought 10,000 acres in 1791. Initial settlers were his son-in-law, Stephen Maynard, and his nephew Jonas Brigham, along with their families. Baker built grist and saw mills on Baker's Pond in 1794. Two years later Maynard built a tavern. In 1797, a school was established in a log cabin at the Post Road and Vermont 108. Five acres were deeded for the development of a town common and burying ground in 1804 by Joseph Baker. Maynard built a Federal style house north of the village to serve as the first post office in 1811.

Cambridge is a town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States. Cambridge includes the villages of Jeffersonville and Cambridge. Granted on November 7, 1780, Cambridge was chartered on August 13, 1781 to Samuel Robinson, John Fassett, Jr., Jonathan Frost and 64 others. It was first settled in 1783 by John Safford from Piermont, New Hampshire. The intervales proved good but rough, best for grazing livestock. By 1839, the town had about 7,000 sheep. The Lamoille River offered water power for watermills. Industries included one woolen factory, one tannery, one gristmill, plus several sawmills and cabinet shops.

Traveled To Hickory, NC: One of The Most Beautiful Corners in America

Today I traveled to Hickory in North Carolina and wanted to show you perhaps one of the most beautiful places in the entered United States.

This is the view of Lake Hickory from Moore's Ferry neighborhood.

Lake Hickory was created on the Catawba River in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Hickory. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge over the Catawba River between Interstate 40 and Taylorsville. It is 122 feet (37 m) high, with an overall length of 1,200 feet (370 m). The spillway section of the dam is 550 feet (170 m) long.

Lake Hickory was named after the City of Hickory and runs along its northern edge.

Cloudcroft sits at an elevation of 8,668 feet in southern New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains, over 4,300 feet above the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan Desert below. The logging industry surrounding Cloudcroft boomed at the beginning of the 20th Century, as a railroad was built to carry spruce and fir timber down to sawmills in Alamogordo. Favorable newspaper reports, though, quickly made Cloudcroft a popular tourism destination as well, a place to escape the desert heat much like we're doing in this week's new episode of Grand Adventure. We survey the camping, RV and recreational opportunities surrounding Cloudcroft, and also visit nearby White Sands National Monument.

Filmed: September 16-18, 2019

Stillwater Mn Tour

Stillwater is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Washington County. It is in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, on the west bank of the St. Croix River, across from Houlton, Wisconsin. Stillwater's population was 18,225 at the 2010 census. Stillwater is often called the birthplace of Minnesota due to its role in the establishment of the state.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.98 square miles (20.67 km2); 6.96 square miles (18.03 km2) is land and 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2) is water. State Highways 36, 95, and 96 are three of the community's main routes.

Climate
Stillwater receives an average annual snowfall of 42 inches (1,100 mm). Average annual rainfall is 24 in (610 mm). Each year has an average of 14 days above 90 °F (32 °C).

Name
The name Stillwater was proposed in 1843 by John McKusick, who built its first sawmill and was later a state senator. The name derives from the calmness of the St. Croix River near the town center. It is also believed that McKusick had fond memories of Stillwater, Maine.

History
On July 29 and September 29, 1837, treaties were signed between the US government and the local Ojibwa and Dakota nations that allowed settlement in the St. Croix Valley. The town was founded by settlers drawn by the area's then-abundant lumber and river traffic, making it one of Minnesota's oldest towns, preceding Minneapolis by several years. Stillwater was officially incorporated as a city on March 4, 1854 (the same day as St. Paul).[citation needed]

Stillwater is often referred to as the birthplace of Minnesota. In 1848, a territorial convention that began the process of establishing Minnesota as a state was held in Stillwater, at the corner of Myrtle and Main Streets. Minnesota officially became a territory in 1849 and a state in 1858.

As more evidence of Stillwater's importance at the time, the convention selected three leading Minnesota cities as locations for three important public institutions: Minneapolis got the University of Minnesota, Saint Paul became the capital, and Stillwater the site of the territory's first prison. The Minnesota Territorial Prison (later Minnesota State Prison) was opened in 1853. The prison held Cole, Jim, and Bob Younger, three of the Younger brothers of the James–Younger Gang

Lumbering was the predominant industry in the St. Croix River Valley in the second half of the 19th century, and for many years logs were sent down the St. Croix, collected at the St. Croix Boom Site two miles upstream of Stillwater, and processed in Stillwater's many sawmills. Steamboats were used most widely from 1860 to 1890, and a few are still used for entertainment today.

David Swain operated a shipyard and engine works in Stillwater. Excursion steamboats, such as the Verne Swain and the Capitol, appeared at the docks in the early 20th century.

Stillwater sent men of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Company B and the 8th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment Company C to fight during the American Civil War.

On October 18, 1921, Charles Strite invented the automatic pop-up bread toaster in Stillwater. By 1926, the Toastmaster Company began to market the first household toaster using a redesigned version of Strite's.

In 1931, construction of the Stillwater lift bridge over the St. Croix River was completed at a final cost of $460,174, which was split equally between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The lift bridge is one of the city's most iconic and visible local monuments. It was part of Minnesota State Highway 36 until 2017, when it closed. In 2020 it became part of a five-mile trail loop running through Stillwater and Houlton, Wisconsin.

In 1996 the city of Stillwater entered into an agreement with Stillwater Township to annex land. In 2015 the Stillwater city council approved the annexing the last of the land covered by the agreement. The city's western border is now Manning Avenue (County Road 15). The northern border is now mostly, but not entirely, Minnesota Highway 96.

In film, television, and books
In The Mighty Ducks films, one of the two bash brothers, Fulton Reed (played by Elden Henson), is from Stillwater.
The novel series The Emigrants and the musical Kristina från Duvemåla tell the story of a family of Swedish emigrants who journey to Minnesota in 1850. Much of the story takes place in Stillwater.
In Juno, Bren MacGuff mentions purchasing an expensive antique item at a Stillwater store.
In the Supernatural episode The Purge, Sam and Dean head to Stillwater when a competitive eater mysteriously dies in impossible circumstances.
The entirety of the film The Unearthing takes place in Stillwater and the story revolves around a local ghost legend.
In Fargo, Stillwater is mentioned, referring specifically to the prison.
Many Corridor Digital YouTube videos were filmed in and around Stillwater.
The Disney film Clouds is set in Stillwater, based on a true story

The Clinton Sawmill Museum Review - Clinton, Iowa - a Mini Adventure

In late September of 2019, my family went to the Sawmill Museum in Clinton, IA! This museum celebrates the time when Clinton was the lumber capital of the Midwest -- from roughly the 1870's to the early 1900's.

This video is part of a 3- part series on a weekend getaway trip in which I got a free night in the Hyatt Place in Moline, IL. See the video about how to score free nights here - and the review of that hotel here -

This museum would appeal to all ages, but is especially great for kids ages 7-12, roughly. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for kids.

Top Restaurants to Visit in Manchester, Maine (ME) | United States - English

Manchester is a town located in Kennebec County, Maine. It is situated along the banks of the Kennebec River and covers an area of approximately 30 square miles. The town has a rich history dating back to its incorporation in 1850.

Originally settled in the late 1700s, Manchester was primarily an agricultural community. The fertile soil and proximity to the river made it an ideal location for farming. In the early years, the town saw significant growth with the establishment of mills, sawmills, and other industries along the river.

One of the notable historical landmarks in Manchester is the Vaughan Homestead. Built in 1784, it is one of the oldest brick houses in the state of Maine. The homestead is now a museum and offers visitors a glimpse into the town's past.

North Stillwater SD 480p

Here is the video of the north part of the riverfront of Stillwater, Minnesota in 1895. As you travel on a steamboat up the St. Croix River, you get to see what the riverfront looked like during one of the busy years of logging on this river.
You can see the Territorial Prison from. distance and the Minnesota Thresher Company nearby, where prisoners worked and made some of the finest steam tractors in the world. There was the Nelson Sawmill and the Schulenburg-Boeckeler Sawmill a little farther north. You can even see some of the boarding houses and dwellings that once stood near the prison and the bluff on the west side of the river.
There were plenty of noises from the foundry, the prison, the sawmills and the river traffic along with the log booms being towed down the river toward their sawmill destinations. There is even a glimpse of the German community that arose on this north part of Stillwater. This area was really the first settlement (Dakotah) even before Stillwater was declared a city. The first railroad came to this area from White Bear Lake and ultimately passed through this area towards Stillwater itself in the 1870's.
The historical photographs came from the Frederick Holcombe Collection with the permission of the Stillwater Public Library and were digitized by the Minnesota Digital Library. Mr. Holcombe was an early amateur photographer who took some very good glass slide negatives of Stillwater at this early time. He was known to make his own camera, enlarger and develop his images in his kitchen in the dark. His early photographs were made with fine-grained silver halide coatings and his small lens openings and long exposures gave rise to his detailed photographs that we can enjoy even better in 2023. Frederick would have loved today's digital technology. Thanks to his patience and hard work, Stillwater has a wonderful record of its history.

Bentley was an eccentric fellow, and legend has it that the only reason he built the hotel is because he was turned down for a room in the former Ice House Hotel. Bentley was particularly impressed by the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock Arkansas, and asked architect George R. Mann to design him a hotel in Alexandria, which opened to the public on August 10, 1908. In 1933 Bentley built a massive eight-story wing fronting Third Street to his hotel, adding more than 80 rooms, which was constructed by a local firm, Tudor-Ratcliffe. Bentley ensured the hotel could also serve as his personal residence. He carved out a large apartment on one of the top floors and installed a personal elevator; both the apartment and the private elevator remain today.

During World War II, the United States military trained over a half a million troops in the Alexandria area. The commanders of these troops, Dwight Eisenhower and George S. Patton, resided for long periods of time at the Hotel Bentley, sometimes joined by Omar Bradley and Henry Kissinger planning the historic Louisiana Maneuvers.

Throughout the 1950s, the hotel continued to flourish, but by the late 1960s the hotel closed for business for nearly a decade. On November 15, 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In the early 1980’s Buddy Tudor, a local developer, purchased and renovated the shuttered hotel, reopening it after millions of dollars in repairs to national acclaim in 1985. Mr. Tudor remained as owner for nearly 15 years and in the late 1990’s he sold the hotel to a group out of New Orleans, and less than a year later, they sold the hotel to Bob Dean who eventually closed it’s doors in 2004.

On August 1, 2012, plans were announced for local entrepreneur Michael Jenkins to renovate and reopen Hotel Bentley, with luxury private residential units, a 93-room hotel, meeting rooms, and restaurant. On October 11, 2012, the sale from Dean to Hotel Bentley of Alexandria LLC, headed by local entrepreneur and preservationist Michael Jenkins was completed. The hotel has undergone a multi-million dollar restoration which included converting the seven-story tower portion of the property into private residential units. The original portion of the property has remained a hotel with 93 guest rooms.

Various entertainers, Hollywood stars and state politicians have been registered guests at the Bentley over the years, including John Wayne and Roy Rogers.
