Latvia's cities and countryside can easily be enjoyed by bicycle – you can go wherever you want and stop when and where you wish. Depending on the route you take, you may see magnificent castles, beautiful coastlines, mysterious woods or vibrant old city centres. Wild camping is allowed everywhere in the country, which makes it very easy to explore remote places. Make sure to visit the beautiful Livonian coast and to stop in Riga to admire its Art Nouveau buildings!
The Baltic countries are perfect places to explore by bike. The flat terrain, long empty coastline, quiet roads and pristine nature make for a cycling holiday like no other. With a growing number of cycling routes in all three Baltic countries, it is now easy and enjoyable to see Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia by bike.
Riga was founded in 1201 and is a former Hanseatic League member. Riga's historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture and 19th century wooden architecture. Riga was the European Capital of Culture in 2014, along with Umeå in Sweden. Riga hosted the 2006 NATO Summit, the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, the 2006 IIHF Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, 2013 World Women's Curling Championship and the 2021 IIHF World Championship. It is home to the European Union's office of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). In 2017, it was named the European Region of Gastronomy.
Riga is the capital of the country and the largest city with a population of approximately 612 thousand. In fact, it is also known as the biggest city of the Baltic states. It is also known as the center of culture, politics, education, finance, trade, industry and tourism of the country. When we collect all of them, we have a great city profile. Comfortable hotels, stylish restaurants, spas, shopping places and entertainment venues are hosted here throughout the year. Here you will find the Cathedral of Dogus, the Statue of Liberty, the Battle of Latvian Museum, the National Art Museum of Latvia, St. Petersburg. The radio and TV tower of Riga is the tallest structure in Latvia and the Baltic States, and one of the tallest in the European Union, reaching 368.5 m (1,209 ft). Riga centre also has many great examples of Art Nouveau architecture, as well as a medieval old town.
Riga, with its central geographic position and concentration of population, has always been the infrastructural hub of Latvia. Several national roads begin in Riga, and European route E22 crosses Riga from the east and west, while the Via Baltica crosses Riga from the south and north.

- Saulkrasti is a town on the east coast of Riga. The town motto is: The town closer to the Sun. Town which carries the name of the Sun. Saulkrasti carries its present name since 1933, when the villages of east coast of Gulf of Riga were merged into one common municipal structure, and since 1991 is a town.
Saulkrasti is the home to the annual Saulkrasti Jazz Festival.
- Jūrmala is located just 30 minutes from Riga. While Latvia was part of the Soviet Union, Jūrmala was a favorite holiday-resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party officials and today remains an upscale tourist attraction.

It was hard leaving beautiful Riga, Latvia ???????? behind, but having a breather at the White Dune of Saulkrasti on our way to Tallinn, Estonia ???????? was well worth it. We had a look at the Gutmanis Cave in the National Park of Sigulda, in Latvia and did a fruit wine tasting on the way. These days are full of things to do, but I love showing the group around as we go.

Белая дюна образовалась из пляжного песка, который ветры несли через глинистые отложения Балтийского ледникового озера. В старину эта белая насыпь высотой 18 метров служила ориентиром для местных рыбаков. Свое название дюна получила благодаря слоям затвердевшего белого песка, который внешне напоминает песчаник.
Окрестности дюны благоустроены, а ее склоны укреплены. Хотя дюна заросла сосновым лесом, все еще виден склон, обращенный к морю.
Вдоль дороги, ведущей к Белой дюне, растут т.н. екатерининские липы, которые, согласно легенде, сажала сама российская императрица Екатерина II, непродолжительное время отдыхавшая на взморье в Пабажи.
Тропа солнечного заката
Протяженность тропы солнечного заката – около 4 километров, она тянется от Белой дюны до центра Саулкрасты. Гуляя по ней, можно любоваться типичными для саулкрастского взморья видами – широким песчаным пляжем, рекой Петерупе и вековыми соснами. С тропы открываются великолепные виды на реку и море.The White Dune is one of the landmarks of Saulkrasti, on the Vidzeme gulf coast. The dune offers a splendid view of the sea, the mouth of the Inčupe River and the vast beach.
The White Dune formed as the wind drove beach sand over the clay silt of Baltic Ice Lake. Its white 18 meters high sand outcrop once helped local fishermen find their way home. The dune got its name from its white, hardened layers of sand which look like sandstone.
Landscaping has been conducted in the area, and the slopes of the dune have been reinforced. Although the dune is covered by a pine tree forest, its steep slope, which faces the sea, is still visible.
In White Dune are set up following Nature Design objects:
- Entrance gates which symbolizes White Dune and its fragility. On the wall of this object an information about White Dune are exposed.
- Nature Design objects Frīda the Hedgehog and Fredis the Rabbit. Both objects invite people to be polite when visiting nature sites and not to throw rubbish on the ground as well as to be quiet in the forest.
- The bug trail which helps to understand that humans are not the only one creatures in the nature.
- Listening device which is made in the form of trumpet and helps to listen into the sounds of sea and wind.
All those Nature Design objects are made with the aim to foster people to be more aware about the processes in nature as well as to prevent problems caused by huge anthropogenic load. All newly made routes are organising tourist flows with the aim - not to harm local nature values.
On your way to the White Dune you will see linden trees named after Russian Empress Catherine II. Legend has it that Catherine II planted the trees while vacationing at Pabazi seaside.
The approximately 4 kilometers long Sunset Trail winds from the White Dune to the center of Saulkrasti. By walking this trail you will be able to see the landscape typical of the Saulkrasti, its wide, sandy beach and fore-dunes, the Pēterupi River and tall pine trees growing. Beautiful views of the river valley and the sea can be observed from several vantage points on the trail.
