About Dordogne:
Dordogne is a department in southwest France, set between the Loire Valley and Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for prehistoric cave paintings in the Vézère Valley, like those in Lascaux Cave. The town of Périgueux is home to the Cathedrale St-Front, with its 5 domes, and the Vesunna Museum, built around Roman ruins. The medieval town Sarlat-la-Canéda centers on the Rue de la Republique and the Cathédrale St-Sacerdos.

Beynac, St.Cypien, Sarlat, and the Dordogne Region!!
A few weeks ago Andrea and I took a trip Bordeaux and the Dordogne region of France. We stayed in a rental called Mont Joie which overlooks the Dordogne river.
The trip is going to be broken down into 3 parts. This first part is covers the house, Beynac, the Beynac Chateau, the St. Cypien Market, and the Sarlat Market. Subsequent parts will cover our Gourmet Day and the final video will cover Bordeaux.
These videos are meant to give you a sense of the area, they aren't a travel guide.

Sarlat in Dordogne: Travel Guide to one of the most famous, most vibrant French towns
When you think of France, you think of Paris, Provence, or Dordogne… and, if you think of Dordogne, then you think of Sarlat, probably the most famous town in the Dordogne area.
Sarlat has everything that you want a French town to have – an exquisite medieval city, an episcopal palace, an amazing cathedral, private estates, narrow streets and alleys, beautiful shops…
Sarlat has a very long history in clergy dominance and nobility influence over the last 800 or 900 years. I highly suggest you pick up a map at the Office du Tourisme and you start walking from one point of interest to the other. The history there is fascinating.
What I absolutely love in Sarlat is the café life… You see elegant patios everywhere – And each one is more beautiful. You don’t know if you should choose your restaurant based on how good the food smells or how chic the terrasse looks. So, be prepared to spend a lot of time making up your mind!
If you are not in a hurry, do make some time, at least half a day, better yet: one full day, to enjoy the town of Sarlat.
I cannot finish this video without saying that Sarlat is at the heart of Foie Gras, “Pate” as a lot of American people say – And truly, the word “Pate” does not bother me as much as it bothers the French people from France who probably know more than needed about processed goose and duck. In the center of the medieval town, just a small reminder that you are in… rich food country, let’s call it!

Join us as we explore spring in southwest France from Bordeau to Sarlat! Not only is it at the heart of a rich culinary heritage (foie gras, anyone?), but of our human heritage, as well. Nearby are the underground Lascaux II and III caves, exact replicas of the famous Neolithic grottos where our ancestors depicted running horses and cattle 17,000 years ago. Colorful drives take us to lesser-known French chateaux—Belcayre, Thonac, Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. The private, extraordinarily landscaped Marqueyssac Hanging Gardens soar above this historic region.

Sarlat-la-Canéda is remarkable among the medieval French villages of the Dordogne, south and east of Bordeaux, to have kept most of its buildings from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance. The beautiful sandstone architecture of Sarlat is stunning against a clear-blue April sky.
Can you spot the salamanders? Catch their metal images atop buildings or carved into archways. The salamander is a symbol of Francis I, king of France, patron of the arts who influenced the French Renaissance far beyond Loire valley chateaux (he was the one who hosted Leonardo da Vinci in France in the artist’s final years). In the 20th C, Sarlat benefited from the influence of Andre Malraux, France's first cultural minister, who advocated for preserving the heritage of many intact post-war French villages. He convinced the government to fund restoration efforts and used Sarlat as a model site.
In Sarlat, the decaying, desanctified Sainte-Marie Church, redesigned by architect Jean Nouvel into a high, narrow grand hall, now hosts an indoor food market, next to the old outdoor one that takes up the whole central square on market days. A modern glass elevator in the church’s former bell tower offers city views. Along with fresh meat, seafood and produce, the markets offer such local delicacies as foie gras (goose and its more affordable variety, duck), cheeses and walnut cake—another local specialty. To the south, close to the Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, stands the bullet-shaped Lanterne des Morts tower.
