Vicenza, Italy

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Vicenza is another one of the great towns of Italy, most famous for the architecture of native son, Andrea Palladio, who lived here 500 years ago. But in today's program, we are focusing on the people and the streets of this beautiful city.
google map of walking route:
With a population just over 100,000, it has a small town feeling and a high quality of life.
It's a very easy place to visit on a daytrip because the old town center is quite small, about one square kilometer, with many pedestrian lanes and beautiful historic sites.
It is not one of those touristic places. You'll see mostly locals out taking a stroll, furnishing an authentic experience.
The town is like an outdoor museum, with a large collection of important historic buildings, beautifully preserved, such as this old gateway through the medieval walls.
Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, with continuous occupation reaching its artistic peak in the works of Andrea Palladio, especially the Basilica on the main Piazza Signori, surrounded by beautiful cafés.

We are going to take you on a walk through some of the pedestrian lanes of town, but first it would be nice to drop anchor and have a spritz, join the local crowd at the little Pizzetta Andrea Palladio, next to the Basilica.
You could easily miss it because it's the smallest of the four piazzas that surround the great building, and yet it's one of the coziest and most charming with these arcades and loggia all around.
Next to it, also adjacent to the Basilica which you see towering above, on top of those steps, is Piazza delle Erbe, serving up more spritz, that favorite local drink.
The Tower of Torment was originally a home for a noble family in the 13th century and then became a prison for torture.
Although Palladio called his building a Basilica, based on ancient Roman structures, it was not a church. It was used for civic functions like meetings, and festivities, and judicial proceedings.
Today it is famous for the many jewelry stores all around the street level loggia. The copper-vaulted roof resembles the hull of an upended boat.
From the piazza we're heading north two blocks to the main pedestrian street, walking along the lovely Contrà Santa Barbara, one of many intriguing side lanes.
The main street of town is 700 meters long and lined with shops and cafés, local tailors, designers, big name brands like Zara and H&M, many of them housed in what had been palaces back in the days of the Renaissance.
It's the favorite place for locals to come out for a stroll, especially during the afternoon passeggiata, that fine Italian tradition of people-watching and greeting friends.
Another favorite Italian tradition is trying to figure out which variety of gelato to order.
Or perhaps enjoying a spritz is more to your liking, while sitting at a sidewalk café and watching the people glide by.
This block has the largest palace along the Corso. It's the magnificent Palazzo Trissino-Baston, home of that noble family in the 17th century, and more recently the City Hall.
The most spectacular palace along the street is found at the east end. It's called Palazzo Chiericati, designed by Palladio in 1550 in that Renaissance style, and completed in the late 17th century. Now it's the Civic Museum, with a collection of paintings, prints, and drawings, and medieval, and modern statues.
The same piazza also has another important building designed by Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico. It's a faithful reproduction of the ancient style of Roman theater, its permanent stage front decorated with statues, columns, triumphal arch and tricks of the illusion. Palladio was 72 when he designed this, which became his final work. He never lived to see it built.
The theater is housed in the Palazzo del Territorio, with 19th-century statues in the garden done in the ancient Roman style.
The Tourist Information Office is also found in this Palazzo, a very helpful source of information and tickets.
The work of Palladio, based on a detailed study of classical Roman architecture, gives the city its unique appearance, according to a statement by UNESCO, which designated the city of Vicenza as a World Heritage Site because of the works of Palladio.
The United States Congress adopted a resolution honoring Andre Palladio in the year 2010, celebrating the 500th anniversary of his birth.
Stating the following: He has shaped much of the architectural image of Western civilization and served as a primary source for classical design of many buildings in the US from Colonial times to the present.
As UNESCO described it, Vicenza is the city of Palladio.
Posted signs and maps can help steer you to the various sites. And you'll find that there are some fascinating side streets that branch off from the main Corso, like these next couple of streets reserved for pedestrians and leading back to the Piazza dei Signori.

Italiens Alpen - Vom Mont Blanc ins Aostatal | ARD Reisen

Places to see in ( Aosta - Italy )

Places to see in ( Aosta - Italy )

Aosta is the capital of the Valle d’Aosta region, in northwestern Italy. It’s near ski resorts and the Gran Paradiso National Park, which has an alpine botanical garden, trails and wildlife like ibexes and eagles. Remnants of Aosta’s Roman past include the Arch of Augustus and the Praetorian Gate, once the city’s main entrance. In the Sant’Orso complex are a Romanesque cloister and a priory with a frescoed chapel.

Jagged Alpine peaks rise like marble cathedrals above the regional capital Aosta, a once-important Roman settlement that retains a charming historic centre, while also sprawling rather untidily across the valley floor. Bounced around between Burgundy (France) and Savoy (Italy) in the Middle Ages, the modern town remains bilingual, with a Valdostan culture that can be heard in its musical local dialect and simple but hearty cuisine.

Aosta is an old Roman town at 583m above sea level, and the largest in the region with a population of 35,000. Full of things to see and do, it’s surrounded by magnificent mountains, including the Grand Combin and the Mont Vélan to the north, Emilius and the Becca di Nona to the south, and the Testa del Rutor to the west.

Located in the centre of the Aosta Valley, the town was founded by the Romans in 25 BC at a geographical point where the physiographic catchment of the Dora Baltea reaches its maximum width, and where the main roads heading to France and Switzerland converge. The presence of the Piccolo and Gran San Bernardo Alpine hills makes Aosta an important strategic junction from a transport point of view (nowadays thanks to the Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo Tunnels).

Rich in monuments from pre-historical, Roman, medieval and later times, Aosta makes a fascinating historical case study. There’s the megalithic area of Saint-Martin de Corleans; the Praetoria Gate, one of the few examples from Roman times still perfectly intact; the Theatre; the forum Cryptoporticus, the perimeter of the boundary walls almost completely intact; a well-preserved extra muros villa; and the magnificent Augustus’ Arch. Ancient roads, fountains, wash-houses, votive chapels, sundials, historical houses and courtyards are also in abundance.

Those staying in the ski resort of Pila often take the 20-minute gondola-ride from there down to Aosta town to sample its delights. There are plenty of shops selling delicious local delicacies, arts and crafts; and lots of restaurants and bars to sample too.

The thousand-year-old Sant‘Orsa Fair is held each year in the centre of Aosta on the 30 and 31 January. Its origins have been lost over time, so much so that someone set the year 1000 as its starting date. So each fair is now numbered as though the first one had been held at the start of the second millennium of our time. Attracting visitors from afar, it’s a craft fair with artefacts in wood, soapstone, wrought iron, lace and woollen fabrics, as well as farming equipment, furniture, household utensils and sculptures.

Aosta is also home to two masterpieces of Medieval art: the Cathedral and San‘Orso. Both feature amazing Ottanian frescoes and a wooden choir; the cathedral also has a treasure museum; and Sant‘Orso Collegiate boasts enchanting cloisters too.

( Aosta - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Aosta . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Aosta - Italy

Aosta La Collegiata di Sant’Orso

viaggio

COGNE - (Italy): an amazing trail and drive tour

Hello, my friends! If you want to like, comment, share or subscribe I'll be very happy!

My dear friends, with this video I take you with me once again in the beautiful Valle d'Aosta Region, located in the north-west of Italy.
And precisely I will take you to Cogne, one of the pearls of the Alps, a famous tourist location renowned for its spectacular position and the beauty of its incredible views.
It is in fact in an absolutely enviable position at the foot of the Gran Paradiso massif at 1,544 meters above sea level.
Cogne also overlooks the spectacular Prato di Sant'Orso, considered one of the most beautiful and largest prairies in Europe, preserved by urban development, which in winter becomes an immense cross-country ski track and in summer a wonderful and endless walk in front of the Gran Paradiso.
The locality of Cogne is what is called a scattered municipality, that is formed by several neighboring villages in which, however, urban development has been limited to preserve and enhance the beauty of the area's landscape heritage in the best possible way, while guaranteeing the maximum hospitality to the many tourists, foreigners and Italians who stay there in every season.
The historic center of Cogne is a small jewel, with characteristic wooden houses and balconies full of flowers and many craft shops where you can find precious souvenirs to take home.
The lace made as it once was with bobbin lace, a very popular activity in the area, is particularly appreciated.
The parish Church, dedicated to Sant'Orso, has very ancient origins, but its current appearance is due to an extension completed in 1642, while the original bell tower was demolished to make way for the present one, built in 1840.
The historic iron fountain built in 1809, which is located right in front of the Sant'Orso meadow, is one of the symbols of Cogne.
Since the Middle Ages, in fact, Cogne has been an important mining center for the extraction of magnetite and iron.
The water that flows from this beautiful fountain is cold and very pure. A sip of this water will quench your thirst from the summer heat!
Numerous valleys, paths, paths, walks of all kinds and difficulties depart from Cogne, always in an extraordinary and uncontaminated nature in the middle of the Gran Paradiso Park.
The Gran Paradiso National Park, the oldest in Italy, is a vast protected natural area, established by the State to preserve the perfect ecosystem of the area.
Inside it gathers five concentric valleys within which are the most characteristic alpine landscapes.
The symbol of the Park is the alpine ibex, an animal safeguarded from extinction thanks to the existence of this protected area.
We have followed one of the itineraries that start from Prato di Sant'Orso in Cogne and go into the Valnontey valley.
We were able to enjoy this absolutely wonderful scenery, the silence broken only by the chirping of birds and the sound of the tumultuous water of the Valnontey stream with our gaze turned to the Gran Paradiso massif. Just wonderful.
This video was shot last October before the second wave of the pandemic.
I wanted to film both the outward and return journeys from Cogne in a small drive tour, to allow you to admire the incredible beauty of these places.
An absolutely breathtaking scenery which I hope you will enjoy.

As always, I want to thank you for the friendship and affection you always show me through your comments.

Places to see in ( Aosta - Italy ) Arco Onorario d'Augusto

The Arch of Augustus (in French Arc d'Auguste) is a monument in the city of Aosta, northern Italy. It was erected in 25 BC on the occasion of the Roman victory over the Salassi and was the work of Aulus Terentius Varro Murena. It is located at the end of the decumanus maximus, a little distance from the Bourg Saint-Ours (quarter of the Collegiate Church of Saint Ursus) and from the eastern entrance of the city wall (the Porta Prætoria).

Constructed from conglomerate, the arch has a single vault, with a height to the keystone of 11.4 metres. Its span is a barrel vault, constituting an extension in width of a round arch. In the monument, various styles can be recognised: The ten engaged columns which decorate its facade and its sides culminate in Corinthian capitals, while the entablature, adorned with metopes and triglyphs, is of the Doric order.

In the Medieval period, it came to be called the Saint-Voût (French for Holy Arch) from an image of Jesus which was located in the same place. During the twelfth century, the arch contained the home of a local noble family and in 1318 a small fortification was built inside it, designed for a corps of crossbowmen. In 1716, because of the numerous leaks that were compromising the integrity of the monument, the attic that previously crowned the arch was replaced with a slate roof.

The arch's modern appearance is the result of a final intervention for restoration and consolidation which occurred in 1912 under the direction of Ernesto Schiaparelli. The wooden crucifix displayed below the vault is a copy of the one which was placed there in 1449 as a votive offering against the flooding of the river Buthier, which flows a little to the east. The original crucifix is now housed in the Museum of Aosta Cathedral's Treasures.
