Loja Ecuador Food: 10 Awesome Things to Eat!
Loja Ecuador has some of the best food in the country - La Comida Lojana. There are some dishes like chaunfaina, cecina and the Lojano Tamal that you'll want to travel for.
Loja is the last city in Ecuador before the Peruvian border. This is considered the cultural capital of Ecuador. It's famous for its musicians and artists and it was also the first Green City in Ecuador with a very aggressive recycling program.
It's a beautiful city, colonial style similar to Cuenca but it's smaller. And also I'm here to check out the Comida Lojana. So Loja has some specific dishes here that are really good. Number one, I'm here for the coffee.
The tamal Lojano is a bit different here. So traditional Ecuador food uses a tamal made with maiz sabroso which is a corn starch based flour. But the tamal Lojano uses a different dough so it's actually just ground corn. So similar to humitas but in that case it's actually the sweet corn called choclo.
At the Tamal Lojano they have three different kinds of tamales. You can get chicken, pork, or also quesillo, which is a fresh cheese.
Mercato Central Commercial in Loja and there were so many things that I want to eat here. I came to this one spot Comedor 413 because it had so many people here. I came for chaunfaina and then also a bit of the cecina.
Chaunfaina is rice that's cooked with a sofrito, but the most important thing is they actually use offal. All of the innards of the pig that would normally be thrown out. And this is a side dish that you'll get, I got it with cecina.
Ecuadorian horchata is a drink that's made with different herbs, often some kind of pink flower petal to give it its color. You can drink it in the market even though you can't drink water here because it is boiled. So I do feel comfortable drinking that. It almost tastes like a pink lemonade here.
I came to Loja to eat two different soups both called repe, which means unripe banana. So in Loja they have the smallish banana that you can eat ripe. And that's how the rest of the country eats it. Or in Loja they also eat it unripe. Which is very unusual for other Ecuadorians because the unripe banana they might feed their livestock.
So these two different soups are interesting because the repe con arveja con guineo is like a kind of like a split pea soup and then it also has cubes of this unripe banana that is uncooked. So this is raw unripe banana in this repe.
Another Ecuadorian soup: repe blanco, boiled green banana, pound it into a mash, mixed with potato and quesillo.
There's an Ecuadoran custom that if you go to Loja, you must stop off for some sweets or dulces in the market. Traditional sweets from Loja are rustic, they're made with sugar cane, molasses, simple ingredients.
Some traditional options are bocadillo, so it's a square of molasses made with peanuts. It's the signature sweet of Loja. You can also get peanuts covered with sugar, fig in syrup. You can also get roscon.
I think the best thing to do actually is just to get the mixed bag because then you're bound like one of them.
When traveling in Loja if you can't get everywhere in the province head to Somos Loja off the main square, which is a cooperative artisanal shop that also has an incredible coffee shop in Ecuador selling 19 types of coffee from Loja. And you can try 10 of the coffees from Loja for $1/cup.
Emporio Lojana is such a great spot with coffee, food, artisanal beer, but also the coolest thing is the signature drink trino, which means something that will make you sing. It means tweet.

Cuenca Travel Guide - Ecuador Magnificent Experience
Cuenca is a vibrant colonial city in southern Ecuador, and the capital of Azuay Province. Cuenca lies in a valley at about 2,500m (8,200 ft), and is home to around 450,000 people. Its moderate climate makes it enjoyable year round.
After Quito, Cuenca is Ecuador’s most important and beautiful colonial city. But don’t say that to the locals, who insist that their laid-back culture, cleaner streets and more agreeable weather outclass the capital, hands down.
Dating from the 16th century, Cuenca’s historic center, a Unesco World Heritage Site with its trademark skyline of massive rotundas and soaring steeples, is a place time keeps forgetting: nuns march along cobblestone streets, kids in Catholic-school uniforms skip past historic churches, and old ladies spy on promenading lovers from their geranium-filled balconies. The city is the center of many craft traditions, including ceramics, metalwork and the internationally famous panama hat – and the nearby villages offer many more handicrafts besides.
Central Cuenca is easily walkable, and it is often faster than taking a cab through the narrow traffic-jammed lanes. Cabs are readily available and charge $2-3 ($1 more at night) per trip. All yellow taxis are required to use taxi-meters. City buses are also fairly easy to figure out. Most bus stops are marked. The cost is $0.30 per ride. Since April 2018 the only way to pay the fare is with the 'movilízate' card, which costs $1.75. You need to charge it before entering the bus. Cuenca is a very bike-friendly city.
Cuenca is a city known for its textile making, along with furniture and other crafts like hats and shoes. They also export many flowers to places such as the United States and countries in Europe. The hats that they are well known for making are straw hats. The tourism industry is big as well in addition with the main university there, “La Universidad de Cuenca”. Cuenca has many cathedrals there that are a part of the sightseeing as well as other national parks.
Buy some flowers at the flower market on Calle Sucre across from the new cathedral. Continue on about a block from there to get to the clothing and artisan market where one can also find knit crafts from Otavalo. Lovely handmade ruanas, sweaters, hats, mittens, and finger puppets are also available here.

Most tourists visit the historic area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between the river Tomebamba and the street Gran Colombia to the north, General Torres to the west, and Hermano Miguel to the east. This area's compactness, grid-like layout, and numerous readily identifiable monuments make it easy to navigate. Outside this area the city can be confusing, as there are dozens of narrow colonial streets with similar buildings.
Major fiestas of Cuenca come at the time of the Mass of Children that is carried out the day of the Arrival of Kings (January 6 - Epiphany Day), or in the commemoration of the independence of the city (November 3), during which processions, cultural acts and dances are organized. The nearby Cañar plantation (in the county of the same name) features the biggest Inca ruins in Ecuador.

Olón is a laid back beach town on Ecuador's Ruta del Spondylus, just a few km north of Montañita. Olón is known for its long uninterrupted beach, perfect waves, and great offering of restaurants and hotels.
We stayed at Rincón de Olón, which is just a few blocks from the beach and offers comfortable suites and a great breakfast buffet.
We tried several restaurants in Olón and our best experience was at Rasimar, thanks to Chef Kathita Andrade.

This video is kind of highlights of my experience with Kichwa people - natives of Ecuadorian Amazon. Volunteering in Wisdom Forest I had privilege to meet and learn from Kichwa people from 3 different communities. Santa Rosa Community, Shandia Community and Tamia Yura Community are those 3 communities that I was lucky enough to meet people from. Mauro and Josue from Santa Rosa, Lady from Tamia Yura and Don Guillermo from Shandia are people that I get to know better. With them I get to know a lot more about Kichwa culture, Kichwa history, Kichwa food, medicinal plants of Amazon forest and lot more things that will make me appreciate my time here in Ecuadorian Amazon even more.
*** To the native people of the Ecuadorian rain forest, the idea of owning nature is not ideal and goes against their beliefs deeply rooted in their cultural and spiritual connection to Mother Earth. The Kichwas have a strong connection with the forest and the animals that live among them. The native concept of what is means to be alive and have a soul is different than other related groups labeled under the umbrella term, Quechuan. The Napo Runa believe humans, plants, and animals all have souls and are almost regarded as equals. The souls of plants are of particular interest because the well-being of a community depends on a healthy relationship with nature. The soul of a plant is called an anima and each organism has its own unique anima. Unlike the Christian understanding of a soul, an anima is thought to be physical and visible through Ayahuasca rituals or dreams. Ayahuasca revered as a sacred or magical plant due to its medicine and spiritual purposes. It is the power to impart wisdom and instruct in healing. It is believed to be the mother of all medicine and mother of all plants.
