Santa Cruz do Sul is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. 155 km from Porto Alegre and 142 km from Santa Maria, in the center of the state. Its population, according to estimates for 2021, was 132,271 inhabitants, making it the 15th most populous municipality in Rio Grande do Sul. It is located in the region of Vale do Rio Pardo. With a temperate climate, with vegetation from the Atlantic Forest and Pampa, and lithographic predominance of volcanic rocks.
The former Colony of Santa Cruz, one of the main centers of the German colonization of Rio Grande do Sul, both Portuguese and German are spoken there, mainly the Hunsrückisch dialect.
Its economy is historically linked to tobacco, being considered the tobacco capital of the world. It experienced strong economic expansion, verticalization, and rural exodus in the 20th century until the beginning of the 21st century, and in 2018 its GDP stood at 9.4 billion reais, the sixth highest in the state, while the Human Development Index (HDI) was of 0.733 in 2010, considered high.
With good infrastructure for tourism, the city is known for hosting the largest Oktoberfest in Rio Grande do Sul, the Oktoberfest in Santa Cruz do Sul, for hosting one of the largest amateur art festivals in Latin America, the Encontro de Arte e Tradição, and by the Autodromo Internacional de Santa Cruz do Sul, also hosting two professional football clubs, Esporte Clube Avenida and Futebol Clube Santa Cruz.
The first inhabitants of the city came in 1849: they lived in huts and ranches. The colony was elevated to a parish in 1859. In 1879, according to a survey, 90.54% of the inhabitants of the Colony of Santa Cruz, excluding Brazilians, came from the Kingdom of Prussia, with 42.53% from Pomerania, 37.88 % from Rhineland, 4.46% from Prussia, 3.57% from Silesia, 1.65% from Westphalia, and 0.14% from Brandenburg. 8.92% came from other German states, and another 0.55% from other European regions.

The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) is a Brazilian public and federal higher education institution located in Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. UFSM is headquartered in Professor José Mariano da Rocha Filho University City. The campus is located in the Camobi neighborhood, km 9, ERS-509 highway, where most of the academic and administrative activities take place. There are, in the center of the city, other academic and community service units.
89 undergraduate courses are offered in Santa Maria, 8 in Frederico Westphalen, 7 in Palmeira das Missões, 6 in Silveira Martins, 5 in Cachoeira do Sul, in addition to 12 undergraduate courses in the distance learning modality. The extension of the university campus is 1,863.57 hectares, with buildings totaling 239,578 square meters, plus 42,036 square meters outside the headquarters, totaling 281,614 square meters of built area.
The institution has 25 auditoriums with a total capacity to accommodate 4,177 people. On the premises of UFSM, there are two bank branches; one from Banco do Brasil and one from Caixa Econômica Federal and a Post Office, twelve snack bars and two University Restaurants, Central Library, with 92,535 volumes (books and theses), Sectorial Libraries, with 63,783 volumes (books and theses), Multipurpose Space to host large events, Teaching Hospital, with 335 beds, Veterinary Hospital and Pharmacy-School Commercial, Museums and Planetarium.
UFSM also offers a residential area, through socioeconomic registration carried out by the Pro-Rectory of Student Affairs, with the capacity to accommodate up to 1,805 students, although such availability depends on some factors. In addition to housing, registered students can apply for transportation, food, foreign language teaching, assistance grants and paid tutoring. Due to the existence of this university, the city of Santa Maria is known as Cidade Universitária.

Santa Cruz do Sul é um município brasileiro no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A 155 km de Porto Alegre e a 142 km de Santa Maria, no centro do estado. Sua população, conforme estimativas do IBGE de 2021, era de 132 271 habitantes, sendo o 15.º município mais populoso do Rio Grande do Sul. Com uma área de 733,4 km², localiza-se na região do Vale do Rio Pardo, fazendo fronteira com os municípios de Vera Cruz, Rio Pardo, Sinimbu, Venâncio Aires, e Passo do Sobrado. Com clima temperado, constitui uma região fisiográfica de transição entre o Planalto e a Depressão Central, contando com vegetação oriunda da Mata Atlântica e do Pampa, e predominância litográfica de rochas vulcânicas.
Com uma população em grande parte católica e evangélica, é lar da Catedral São João Batista, a maior em estilo gótico da América do Sul, e da Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana, maior templo evangélico do Rio Grande do Sul. Abriga ainda a Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul, com onze mil alunos matriculados em 52 cursos de graduação, além de três outras instituições de ensino superior, catorze escolas de ensino médio, 114 de ensino básico, e três hospitais, possuindo ainda uma pista de pouso e um presídio regional.
Com boa infraestrutura para o turismo, a cidade é conhecida por sediar a maior Oktoberfest do Rio Grande do Sul, a Oktoberfest de Santa Cruz do Sul, por receber um dos maiores festivais de arte amadora da América Latina, o Encontro de Arte e Tradição, e pelo Autódromo Internacional de Santa Cruz do Sul, sediando ainda dois clubes profissionais de futebol, o Esporte Clube Avenida e o Futebol Clube Santa Cruz.

What To Do In Santa Cruz, CA
Santa Cruz is a city located 70 miles south of San Francisco along the California coast. Here you'll find some great surfing, sandy beaches, redwood-covered mountains, a lively boardwalk, and plenty more!
We visit Santa Cruz and enjoy a small part of what this area has to offer. Our first stop landed us at Café Brasil where we devoured a delicious meal
The next stop was to the Capitola Village which is a small town known for its beautiful, bright-colored houses. A must-visit to get your Instagram shot in. We walk down the Capitola Wharf where there are a few local businesses and some of the best views of the Capitola Village.
After exploring the small town, we head into Santa Cruz and go down the Santa Cruze Beach Boardwalk where there's a full-on amusement park with rides, games, snacks, and shows. A wonderful area for families and a great place to hang out.
Our day ended with a dinner back in Sunnyvale at 10 Butchers Korean BBQ where we had some of the best meats we've ever had and the best service to go along with it.
