The Most Dangerous Village at Lake Atitlán? (San Pablo)

After hearing warnings from a local farmer that San Pablo La Laguna is full of thieves and that I would probably be robbed with machetes, I became too interested to see if the village was really that bad. I decided to explore San Pablo and see how it's actually like for a visitor. I also gave a go to a jumping platform in San Marcos and made the 12 meter jump to the Lake Atitlán.

My fourth and last day on Lake Atitlán!

I woke up early again to make the most of the day, my plan being to take a boat out of Panajachel to San Juan. After learning that the Western Embarcadero (Pier) is the better one to take, I headed there and got a boat straight away. In San Juan I walked up the Mirador and headed along the trail to the Indian's Nose. I got lost along the way more than once but eventually found my way to the summit. I relaxed there for 10 minutes or so and then decided to head back to San Juan.

This didn't quite go according to plan and somehow I ended up getting lost again and ending in Santa Clara. This town isn't by the lake and therefore not appealing to tourists. I was the only non-Guatemalan person in town. I had a walk around the market and ended up getting a Chicken Bus to San Pedro.

In San Pedro I got a late lunch in a Japanese restaurant, went out on a kayak for an hour and headed back to Panajachel around 4pm. I was heading to the Pacific the next day so I went back to the hotel, packed my bag and went out for dinner, a delicious seafood ceviche.

One Day on Lake Atitlan Guatemala | Hiking Sightseeing Boat Rides | San Marcos Santa Cruz Panajachel

Filmed September 2022 in Guatemala's Rainy Season ????

Total expenditure for the day: £65 / $75 / GTQ550

Hotel: £34
2 beers & 1 Michelada: £10
Lunch: £8
Dinner: £7
Water/snacks: £2
Boats: £6

I'd been in Lake Atitlan a couple of days touring the lake and today I decided to do a hike and take the GoPro along with me.

Starting at my hotel in Panajachel, at the top of the main drag, Calle Santander, I walked down to the Embarcadero (pier) to find a boat over to Santa Cruz, a village a few miles to the west. The first man I spoke to tried to sell me a private trip for 125 GTQ (Guatemalan Quetzales) which I wasn't interested in (extortionate price) and told me the public boat wasn't for another hour. I walked away and he tried offering me a price of 100, then 50 GTQ, but by then I had lost any incentive to give the man any of my money. A minute later, another chap came along and offered to take me straight away for 30 GTQ.

And so I was off! And with a boat to myself, we were there within 15 minutes. I made my way up the steep hill from Santa Cruz Pier to the village which seemed to be overrun with kids starting school. I didn't see a single non-Guatemalan in the village which was very colourful and had amazing views down to the lake. I had a quick walkaround, then made my way down to the shore to start the walk.

The walk took in some amazing views across the lake, through pine trees (Lake Atitlan is at an altitude of over 1,500 metres so it maintains a kind of alpine air - although as it's tropical it remains warm, a spring-like climate all year round, generally between 16-25 degrees), palm trees, banana trees, waterfalls, mudslips, small villages, luxury hotels, minimal hostels and more.

All too soon I was back on the road heading into San Marcos. After a refreshing coconut by the church, I had a walkaround the village which had a really laid-back feel to it. I had a delicious vegan curry and noodles and decided to make my way back to Panajachel.

The boat was simple to negotiate this time, a public boat for 25 GTQ and this was a busy public boat this time, making several stops and taking around 35-40 minutes. No problem, I wasn't in a rush. In Panajachel I had a couple of things to do and then I decided to go for a couple of beers and enjoy the lakeside view. In a bar that in many parts of the world would be packed, I sat and relaxed almost by myself for a couple of hours before the inevitable rain arrived.

I then went for Tacos and a nightcap before heading to bed, to get an early night ready for another day on the Lake (and a more challenging hike).

San Juan de la Laguna, Lago Atitlan, Guatemala

The Town of San Juan de la Laguna, Lago Atitlan, Guatemala. One of the best places to stay, visit or things to do or things to see in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

Lakefront Airbnb - Kitchen With A View! Lake Atitlan, San Pedro Guatemala

Discover a great place to stay in an airbnb right on the lakefront with an open-air kitchen with a great view! In Guatemala, we enjoyed spectacular sunrise views over Lake Atitlan and its active volcanoes right outside of San Pedro La Laguna, a beautiful village on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

San Pedro is a small village at the foot of a massive volcano and the most popular of the resorts on Lake Atitlan. We stayed at Casa Kawoq, a lake side AirBnB with stunning views of both the lake and its surrounding mountains.

One of our favourite adventures in all of Guatemala was the Indian Nose hike, with panomaric views of Lake Atitlan at sunrise. It is a steep but short 45 minute hike up a small mountain, in the pitch black to get there before sunrise. Detailed info on how to DIY the Indian Nose hike, which leaves from the village of Santa Clara:
