WHAT TO SEE IN LA PAZ + BOLIVIAN FOOD TOUR // BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

After pushing our way through altitude sickness when we first arrived in La Paz, we finally made it out of our apartment and into the bustling administrative capital of Bolivia! A new country for us, we were so excited to see the sights and start getting to know Bolivia.

We spent the day exploring the city and trying as many local Bolivian dishes as we could, which is our preferred way of getting to know a new culture. We start our by day eating at a common chain restaurant called Wistupiku in the Sopacachi neighbourhood before making our way to San Pedro Prison, notoriously one of the most dangerous and lawless prisons in the world. From there we took mi teleferico up to El Alto to see the beautiful city views, and then headed back into the city centre to visit Mercado Lanza for lunch (which was an experience!). Then it was off to San Francisco Square where we found all sorts of art and food stalls, before finally seeing the notorious Witches Market which truly does hold many, many petrified llama fetuses.

Throughout this day of exploring we managed to try 8 Bolivian foods: humintas, pastel de queso, api, fricase, mocochinchi, a fruit salad dessert bigger than Nicole's head, helada de canela, and choripan. It was a full day of exploring and eating, but we finish the day feeling like we had experienced quite a bit of La Paz in just one day!

If you are wondering what to see in La Paz, if Bolivia is safe, or what foods to eat while you are in La Paz, then watch the video through to the end to see all the things you can get up to in just one day in the big city!

NUMBER 10. CHACALTAYA SKI RESORT Chacaltaya Ski Resort
Chacaltaya Ski Resort was Bolivia's only ski area. It used to sit on a glacier that was 18,000 years old, but that glacier no longer exists. What was once the world's highest ski resort is now mostly gone because the glacier melted because of global warming. Since 2005, there hasn't been any skiing here. But the resort once had a great history. It was the first place in South America to have a funicular that took skiers to the top.
Number 9. PLAZA MURILLO
Plaza Murillo is the main square in La Paz. It is surrounded by government buildings, like the Presidential Palace, and a cathedral. From the 16th century on, the square in what is now called the old town was called the Plaza Mayor. In 1902, the name was changed to honor Pedro Murillo, a Bolivian leader who was hanged by the Spanish in 1810 during a rebellion for independence.
Number 8. WITCHES MARKETWitches' Market
When people go to the Witches Market, or Mercado de las Brujas, they might want to bring an amulet with them to keep away evil spirits. This isn't a normal market, unless you want to buy dried frogs or goat unborn babies, which are the market's specialties. As a gift to the goddess Pachamama, goat babies are buried in new homes and businesses.
Number 7.HUAYNA POY Huayna Potosi
Hikers and mountain climbers with a lot of experience may want to try Huayna Potosi, but only if they are used to being at high altitudes. This is the most popular place to hike in the area. It is about 24 km from La Paz. Hiking across glaciers is not a good idea for first-timers, but some have done it. The hike takes between two and three days, and the first day is used to get ready for the climb.
Number 6. Basilica of San Francisco
The Basilica of San Francisco was built a year before La Paz was built. In 1548, work began on the church, which was built in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1610, heavy snow caused it to fall down. It took more than 170 years to rebuild. The art in the church is a mix of Bolivian native and Catholic styles. Its Baroque outside is decorated with symbols from the area, such as birds, snakes, and dragons.
Number 5. Calle Jaen
Near the Plaza Murillo, there is a cobblestone street called Calle Jaen that is thought to be the best colonial street in all of La Paz. Brightly coloured houses from the 1600s line both sides of the narrow street. The street is also made up of shops, cafes, and places to have fun. Some of the most important museums in La Paz are on Calle Jaen, which is named after the Bolivian revolutionary Apolinar Jaen.

Number 3. Cycle the Yungas Road
Named the most dangerous road in the world, The Yungas Road goes from La Paz to the northern part of Bolivia, where the Amazon rainforest is. From La Paz, the road goes up about 4,500 meters and then drops about 1,200 meters to reach the town of Coroico. The road is dangerous for cars, but mountain bikers love Yungas because they can ride 65 km downhill from La Cumbre back to the city.
Number 2. Day trip to Tiwanaku
Tiwanaku is one of the most important cities that came before the Inca Empire. It is 72 km west of La Paz and near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca. Between the 7th and 9th centuries, the village grew into a city and became an important regional power in the southern Andes. At its peak, between 15,000 and 30,000 people lived in the city. Even though only a small part has been dug up, Tiwanaku is the most impressive megalithic building in South America before the Incas.

10. Rurrenabaque
The charming town of Rurrenabaque, or Rurre, is a backpacker’s paradise. It is situated on the shores of the Rio Beni, and is the jumping off point for many jungle, pampas and riverboat tours that last between one and thirty days. The lowland tribe people here, the Tacana, are one of the few who were resistant to Christianity, so the town does not have the typical setup of a central cathedral square. These days, however, it gets a large enough tourist trade that the culture mostly caters to Western tourist tastes.

9. Coroico
The name of this town is derived from the quechua word meaning “golden hill.” Its location on the side of the Andean foothills gives the resort village of Coroico a spectacular view of lush jungle forest, tropical foothills and jagged, icy peaks. It is low enough in elevation to be warm, and a great stopping point on the way to or from La Paz. Extreme mountain biking is a draw here, though there are several lovely hikes in this region as well to lovely waterfalls and hilltop views.

8. Sorata
Located between La Paz and Lake Titicaca, the sleepy town of Sorata serves as a base camp for visitors who want to hike in the mountains of the Cordillera Real. The granite slopes of the Cordillera Real lie in the Altiplano, or “high plains,” of the widest part of the Andes Mountains. Six of the towering peaks of the range are over 20,000 feet high. Hikers come to Sorata to plan and prepare for mountain-climbing treks.

7. Copacabana, Bolivia
This resort town on the shores of Lake Titicaca appears very touristy, but it has a long history of being a mecca for religious pilgrims. This is the place to board a ferry to the islands of the Sun and the Moon, and to enjoy the beach of the Incas. Those who like to wander outside the touristy part of town will find pleasant hikes and great views, as well as a combination of beautiful Incan and colonial ruins.

6. Potosi
Potosi is one of the world’s highest, and before its discovery by the conquistadors, it was also one of the world’s richest cities. The famed city of silver was by many accounts everything that the Spanish were looking for with El Dorado, except that the metal they found was silver instead of gold. Today, Potosi is a popular place to visit in Bolivia, known for its friendly inhabitants, lovely colonial architecture and tours of the famed mines that once housed over sixty thousand tons of silver.

5. Sucre
Sucre was once the nation’s capital, and is famed throughout South America as the White city. The town’s central area has beautifully whitewashed and well-kept buildings that are worth seeing. This is an old and wealthy city whose rise in status was tied very closely to Potosi.

4. Oruro
This miners town is one of the largest in Bolivia, and is best known for its lavish costumes and festivities during carnivale season. The festival features thousands of dancers and musicians, performing a broad variety of ethnic dances. Off season, it is a great place to experience the high plains, and is home to several good museums and the artisanal street of Calle La Paz, which makes many of the costumes and masks for the festival, as well as tourist reproductions to bring home and display.

3. Tiwanaku
Tiwanaku, found on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, was the capital city of one of the most important civilizations to exist prior to the Incas. Archaeologists have excavated only a small part of the city, but they estimate that at its peak at least 20,000 people lived in the city.

2. La Paz
La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, while Sucre is the constitutional capital. Situated on steep hills at an elevation of roughly 3,650 meters (11,975 ft) above sea level, La Paz is the highest “de facto” capital city in the world. The sight from the air as one flies into La Paz is incredible.

1. Salar de Uyuni
Located in the Andes Mountains, Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. It has an extraordinary flatness with the average altitude variations within one meter (3 feet) over the entire area of the Salar. The expanse of salt creates an unending white landscape during the dry season, but the area is most breathtaking in the rainy season when it is covered in water.

Stranded in the Bolivian Desert: Overnight Bus from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Uyuni, Bolivia

Sharing with you my craziest travel story of traveling in Bolivia and Chile. We explored La Paz, doing a walking tour, riding the Teleferico gondolas, and visiting the Witches Market. Then we took an overnight bus to Uyuni to do a 3 day Salt Flats, Salar de Uyuni tour which was incredible! We opted to get dropped off at the Chilean border and stayed in San Pedro de Atacama for a few days. We booked a bus back to Uyuni but was faced with so many issues like visa border crossing, bus getting stuck in ditches on the dirt roads, protestors shutting down the roads, offroading, bus smelly toilet and flies infestation all with no food or water for 22 hours! Even though this was in 2018, I’m still traumatized and it took THIS long for me to share this story because I still can’t believe this happened… hope you enjoy!
#travelvlog #bolivia #salardeuyuni

Found this news reporting, which matched our dates: Various gatherings are set to take place on Tuesday, March 20, throughout the country in support of Bolivia’s territorial claim over the Atacama corridor. The navy has called for “Blue Tide” (Marea Azul) demonstrations, the largest of which will take place in the city of La Paz. There, marchers will gather beginning at 15:00 (local time) at three points - the Estado Mayor, Plaza Abaroa, and Plaza Gualberto Villarroel - before converging on Plaza Francisco. Smaller demonstrations are to be anticipated in other departmental capitals, smaller cities, and border areas. An increased security presence and associated transportation disruptions are possible.

San Pedro de Atacama's most dangerous, but beautiful road - 27!

The first time we went on road 27 out of San Pedro de Atacama that leads past Bolivia and to Argentina, we absolutely loved it! It's such a beautiful road! We saw loads of vicunas and flamingos, it even started snowing at one point! It was our favorite thing to do in San Pedro! Unfortunately, the second time we went on it, it didn't go so well. We were stopped by the police and told that there have been a shooting on that road and bandits from Bolivia have gone across the border and stolen a load of cars and taken them back into Bolivia.

We are on an EPIC 4.5 month long roadtrip through Chile, from it's arid north to the lush south. We're driving 15,000 km through Chile and exploring both the places you will have heard of and those that you won't! We'll be enjoying epic views, spending time with wildlife and having the time of our life. But at the same time - dealing with high prices, bad roads, earthquakes, volcanoes and awful Airbnbs. Chile is an adventure! So join us on our journey through the longest country in the world!

A DAY IN LA PAZ - SAN PEDRO PRISON - WITCHES MARKET - CHOLITA WRESTLING - BACKPACKING BOLIVIA ????????

Our backpacking adventure has taken us to Bolivia. ????????

We recommend anyone staying in La Paz to stay near San Francisco Plaza. It’s the best place to stay in La Paz.

We spent a day having a walking tour around the city. We first stopped at plaza Sucre, this plaza is famous for being right next to San Pedro prison. That’s right, a prison in the centre of downtown La paz where the inmates rule it themselves.
Next we headed to a sprawling market which stretches for over 40 blocks, a lot of Cholitas work on these market stalls and you can get anything you want.
A quick trip to see the San Francisco cathedral before heading to plaza Murillo, here is the famous backwards clock and other impressive buildings. Here we heard about the history of Bolivia and the walking tour finally took us to a bar where we tried Sangani for the first time.

We went on our own to see the famous Cholita wrestling in la paz. It was so much fun.

Finally we ended up walking through the witches market, so many weird and wonderful things. Dead baby lamas the most crazy.

Hope you enjoy la paz as much as we did.

The Salt Flats of BOLIVIA, La Paz and more | A Place Like No Other

There is so much to see in Bolivia. The Salt Flats also known as the Salar De Uyuni is one of the best 3 days you will ever have (unless you get sick like I did). It’s tough going at altitude but worth every view, perspective shot and memory. From La Paz to El Alto, the highest city/ cities in the world we discover local legends and real life witches, surrounding the mountains and almost get locked up in the world famous San Pedro Prison!
There is a lot to see in this small landlocked country and although due to sickness we didn’t see it all, it is worth spending time here.

In this video we showcase our highlights of Bolivia, and all the places we visited in sequential order, showing our time here through a mixture of highlight clips and audio treats.

Our full South America Travel series is available to watch and each place visited has its own travel Vlog with lots of tips on what to see, how to do so cheaply and our honest on the ground experience. Details of the series for Bolivia and details of each video is below.

We hope you enjoy our South America Highlights for Bolivia.

Our first stop in Bolivia was the Salar de Uyuni. Headed out into the Salt Flats on a 3 days tour of some amazing natural landscapes at high altitude.
