Mapanuepe Lake: San Marcelino, Zambales' Best Keep Secret!
Looking for a place to go to for a quick escape from the busy life? Secret's out! Just a little over 3 hours away from Manila is a relaxing campsite set right next to a scenic lake called Mapanuepe Lake that is interchangeably called Lake Mapanuepe. Gigantic pine trees, rich green grass and unparalleled clean air make this spot the perfect destination to de-stress and bond with family as well as friends.
There are two ways to get to the campsite.
1) You can take public transport from Victory Liner's terminal in Cubao and take the bus to Zambales. Ask the driver to drop you off in San Marcelino. From there, you take a tricycle and ask to be brought to jump off point going to Mapanuepe Lake. The boat ride is 10 minutes. If you're taking a sedan or a van this route is the better option. OR
2) If you really want the full experience, take a spacious, comfortable and reliable mid-sized to full-sized SUV so you can bring all your camping necessities all the way to the campsite. In our case, we decided to bring the Geely Okavango as recommended by friends. We had a lot of fun and felt very rested and safe throughout the road trip. If this is more like your taste, take NLEX then TPLEX to Subic. From there take the main Zambales road all the way to the San Marcelino Public Market. At that area you will usually find a local guide that can bring you the campsite. If you need one you can contact our guide through FB: John Alvin Soria Romualdo.

The Hidden Paradise of Zambales
Lake Mapanuepe: The New Zealand of Zambales
This lake is one of the newest tourist destinations in the Zambales province which is situated in Barangay Aglao, San Marcelino municipality. Because of its gaining popularity among the local visitors, it got featured on KMJS or Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho which is one of the most popular TV shows in the Philippines. Many local tourists called this Lake Mapanuepe the New Zealand of the Zambales because the view is very akin to those vast green pastures and lush green grass found in New Zealand. In addition, the area is surrounded by hills and towering pine trees. Lake Mapanuepe has a size of more than 500 hectares and a depth of 20 meters.
According to its past history, Lake Mapanuepe was formed from the destructive explosion of Mt. Pinatubo in the year 1991. The lahar coming from the volcanic eruption blocks all exit points of water going down the Mapanuepe Valley in Barangay Aglao and Barangay Buhawen as well as the river. As a result, the rising waters submerged the Mapanuepe Valley and Lake Mapanuepe comes into existence. It was said that all structures in the two barangays were sunk during the violent eruption and only the sunken Bojaoen church’s huge metal cross can be seen in the middle of the lake.
As of today, Lake Mapanuepe is one of the emerging tourist spots in Zambales province. It is a perfect place for family outings and lazy camping. However, going there will not be easy but it’s totally worth it. The rough road trail going there is around 4 to 5 kilometers starting from the Zambales Mega Dike. Even so, if you are looking for a perfect place to relax then Lake Mapanuepe is a special place for you because you don’t need to trek it’s just chill camping.
