Places to see in ( Puglia - Italy )

Places to see in ( Puglia - Italy )

Puglia, a southern region forming the heel of Italy’s “boot,” is known for its whitewashed hill towns, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometers of Mediterranean coastline. Capital Bari is a vibrant port and university town, while Lecce is known as “Florence of the South” for its baroque architecture. Alberobello and the Itria Valley are home to “trulli,” stone huts with distinctive conical roofs.

Puglia is Italy’s ascendant region, a place where savvy travellers bored or worn down by the crowds of Campania and Tuscany escape for something a bit less frenetic and manicured. Top of the list for prospective newcomers is the food. Puglia’s cucina povera is about as earthy as Italian cuisine gets without eating it straight out of the soil. Then there’s the exuberant architecture, best summarised by the word ‘baroque’ and exhibited in all its finery in the glittering ‘Florence of the South’, Lecce, and its smaller sibling, Gallipoli.

With the longest coastline of any region in mainland Italy, Puglia is larger than many people realise. In the north, the spur of land sticking out into the Adriatic is occupied by the balmy microclimates of the Gargano peninsula, a kind of miniature Amalfi with fewer poseurs. The Italian boot’s ‘stiletto’ hosts the land of Salento, a dry scrubby region famous for its wines, and bloodthirsty Greek and Turkish history. In between lies the Valle d’Itria, a karstic depression populated by vastly contrasting medieval towns that have little in common apart from their haunting beauty. Of the larger cities, Brindisi, an erstwhile Roman settlement, is one of the major departure points for Greece (by ferry), while Puglia’s largest metropolis, Bari has a university and trendier inclinations.

Rodi Garganico, Gargano - Puglia, Italy

If you are planning to visit Gargano, in Puglia - Italy, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Rodi Garganico too, a village which stands on a small promontory overlooking the sea and still preserves some towers and archaeological treasures that tell the ancient history of the Greek and Roman colony.

Here some suggestions on FOOD and ACCOMMODATIONS:
Where to have a MEAL: Eco Del Mare, Via Lungomare, 33, 71018 San Menaio, +39 0884968410
ACCOMMODATIONS: B&B ELI, Via Antonio Gramsci, 14, 71012 Rodi Garganico, +39 3389140660

The blue of the sea beds, the white of the houses and the orange of citrus trees: these are the colors of Rodi Garganico, wonderful of Gargano National Park.

The castle, royal residence of the King Ferdinand of Aragon, overlooks the sea, with the towers and the impressive city walls. The historic centre, surrounded by keeps, is a maze of winding streets, sloping stairs, arches and small gardens, where you are amazed by the gentle whitewashed houses with red roof, built one on the other as a way to protect the town from pirates attacks.

Don’t miss the churches of San Nicola of Myra and San Pietro and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Libera, to visit before arriving at the belvedere, where there used to be the main entrance gate. From here, you can enjoy a breathless view, extending from the Convent of the Capuchins to the coast.

Rodi is a destination not to miss, thanks to its extraordinary natural heritage: the coast surrounds the town, with the beaches of Ponente (West) and Levante (East), while in the hinterland, the scents of citrus trees and the lush vegetation of the Umbra Forest, not far away from here, enthral and seduce.

????????????????'???? ????????????????????????
The name Alberobello could derive from *Silva alboris belli*, with the meaning of forest of the war tree and this derivation, devoid of documentary confirmation, has long been endorsed by later historians.

Later studies however underline that the first toponym with which the locality was known was *Silva Alborelli*: so it appears from the oldest document known to scholars in 1481.
The name Alberobello became official on 1797. However, until the 19th century the alternative terms Arborebello or Albero Bello were also adopted.

????????????????????????????
A first anthropization of the area began only in the early 16th century on the impulse of the Count of Conversano Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva d'Aragona, son of Giulio Antonio Acquaviva who fell in the summer of 1480 in the battle of Otranto against the Ottomans.

His successor, Count Giangirolamo II, known by 19th-century historians as the *Guercio delle Puglie* (blidman of the Puglie) because from a struggle he obtained a bandaged eye in 1635 who started the urbanization of the forest with the construction of an agglomeration of small houses.

The abundance of material, especially limestone and karst stone and the count's authorization to build houses only with dry stone walls without the use of mortar, which became the characteristic trulli, contributed to the expansion of the urban agglomeration.

The obligation to have houses built only with dry stone was an expedient of the count to avoid paying taxes to the Spanish viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples.

Alberobello remained a fief of the Acquaviva d'Aragona of Conversano until Saturday 27 May 1797, when King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon accepted the request of a delegation-committee of seven gentlemen, and elevated the small village to a royal city, freeing it from feudal servitude.

On June 22 1797, physicist Francesco Giuseppe Lippolis nicknamed False Ears was elected as the first mayor. On 16 March 1814 the parish was established. In the summer of 1797 Antonio Francesco D'Amore built the first two-storey trullo, known today as *Casa D'Amore*.

Alberobello is the only inhabited center in which there is a whole number of trulli, therefore it is considered the cultural capital of the trulli of Murgia and Valle d'Itria.
It is an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.

Much has been discussed about its origins, but it is certain that it already existed in the 4th century. B.C. A legend has it that it was Perseus, son of Jupiter, who founded 'Jovis natio'. Giovinazzo is present in the Tabula Peutingeriana with the name of Natiolum.

We find the toponym Juvenatium in a document from the year 938 AD relating to the reconstruction of the Church of San Felic, where the Greek Cinnamo index et spartharicus of Jebenatia is mentioned.

This medieval form has been interpreted as........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

When in Naples, a visit to Vomero Hill as well as the famous Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I and Naples Royal Palace is a must do! The city has various stunning architectural buildings such as churches, palaces and museums and the food culture is just incredible! Naples is indeed the birthplace of pizzas so you cannot leave the city without trying a real Neapolitan style pizza (Sorbillo, Da Michele, etc.). Naples has many to offer, from swimming into the sea to hiking on the Vesuvius Vulcano. Besides the city itself, there are other incredible places to visit, such as the islands of Capri or Ischia or the archeological ruins of Pompeii.
