Day Trip to San Angelo ???? (FULL EPISODE) S7 E8

Sitting near the doorway to the West, this Texas town is brimming with history, sheep and food. And whether you pronounce it SNAN-gelo, Angelo or – as it looks – San Angelo, you’re bound to enjoy your stay in this Wild West frontier.

To truly travel back to the frontier days, tour the historic Fort Concho, the place that started it all. The fort’s cramped soldiers’ barracks and stately officers’ quarters paint a picture of life on the frontier. And if you’re dying to spend a night like a Texas soldier, the fort will even let you stay the night in the Officer’s Quarters.

Since San Angelo is known as the “Wool and Mohair Capital of the World,” you (or rather “ewe”) will want to check out the Sheep Statues scattered all across the city. Don’t be baah-shful, get a picture with the “Gold Rush” Sheep or the “Coat of Many Colors” Sheep.

To learn more about the women of the Wild West, visit Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum. The dim lighting and original furniture of this authentic Texas bordello will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time 100 years ago to the most famous bordello west of the Colorado River. Legend has it that a secret tunnel under Miss Hattie’s Restaurant and Cathouse Lounge led to the bordello during its early days.

Out of the murky waters of the Concho River comes the legendary Concho Pearl, a rarity that is valued for its shimmery pink and purple hue. Mark Priest’s Legend Jewelers uses the pearls to create a unique piece of jewelry for each customer. Stop in and see Texas pearls worth over $250,000.

In such a booming town, you’ll need an equally powerful meal to start your day. Donutopia is a sugary wonderland where you can eat dessert for breakfast. Their doughnut creations come doused in syrup, frosted with whipped cream and sprinkled with bacon. You can even get a bacon-cheeseburger doughnut or doughnut breakfast sandwich — talk about the breakfast of champions!

Unfortunately, the Concho Pearl Icehouse has closed since we filmed this episode.

Explore the wild frontier and take in that West Texas air on one of the many trails at San Angelo State Park. The brushy land surrounding miles of rugged trails make it a great place for mountain biking. Just be careful – you’re in the middle of real nature so everything sticks, pokes or stings (AKA – don’t fall off your bike..).

For a far less rugged and way more artsy nature experience, meander through countless sculptures and public art installations along the Concho River Walk.

SAN ANGELO: What I Saw In This Rural West Texas Oasis

I visited San Angelo, a city of 100,000 people in rural West Texas. It's a nice town, with an impressive collection of street artwork and water lillies. In the beginning of the video, I visit Uvalde, Texas, where an impressive memorial has been set up.

Texas Longhorns Herd | San Angelo, Texas

Texas longhorn legacy
First known as “Texas cattle,” and later, “Texas Longhorns,” the animals had spread over a wide area by the time Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836. They ranged from the Red River to the Rio Grande, east to the Louisiana line and west to the upper breaks of the Brazos River. These early longhorns, almost completely wild, continued to roam Texas until the end of the Civil War.

Longhorns today
The Historical Commission and Texas State Parks now jointly manage the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd. Members of the herd live at San Angelo, Copper Breaks, Palo Duro Canyon and Lyndon B. Johnson state parks.

ABOUT US
We are Jed and Sandy Hall, the creators of Wanderful Revolution. Jed was born in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Sandy was born and raised in Maryland. We met in Washington State, while serving our country in the United States Navy. After separating from military service, we both went back to school and became nurses, which ultimately led to us selling our home in 2015 and hitting the road as travel nurses working in Emergency Departments throughout the USA.

During our travels, we lived in an Airstream travel trailer and made it our goal to become debt free. At the beginning of 2020, we paid off the last of our debts and quit our jobs so we could follow our long time dream of traveling the world. Of course, COVID-19 brought us to a screeching halt. So, we decided to build out a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter van, which we plan to drive on one of the longest road trips in the world: the Pan-American highway from Alaska to the tip Argentina (and possibly beyond).

We are excited and very fortunate to be able to live this amazing lifestyle! So, we want to share it with you! Join us to check out some amazing places, go on exciting adventures, eat delicious food, and perhaps learn some tips and tricks about living full-time in a van. We hope you will join us on our Wanderful Revolution! We will see you out there and we hope we inspire you to STAY WANDERFUL!!

Great Place in America San Angelo Texas Tom Green County + Fort Concho Historic Landmark

San Angelo is a city on the Concho River in Texas.
It’s known for its 1860s U.S. army post, the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark.
Its restored buildings display original artifacts and weapons. The Concho River Walk is a long, green corridor with walking trails, gardens and parks, such as The Bosque and Kids' Kingdom. Downtown, Concho Avenue is lined with restored 19th- and 20th-century period buildings

San Angelo lies in the midst of West Texas ranching country almost in the center of Texas and is home to about 100,000 friendly people.

A virtual oasis, San Angelo is home to three lakes, as well as the beautiful Concho River, which runs through the heart of the city.
San Angelo was established across the river from historic Fort Concho, a fort that served as headquarters for the 4th and 10th Cavalry and 16th Infantry.

The settlement was originally named Santa Angela in honor of Carolina Angela de la Garza DeWitt, the deceased wife of the city's founder Bart J. DeWitt, a merchant and businessman. The name was later changed to San Angelo.
