Central Thailand: Samut Sakhon

#Thailand #Bangkok #travel

Located roughly 50km SW of central Bangkok, Samut Sakhon was formerly called Tha Chin (Chinese Pier) probably because, in the old days, it had been a trading port for a vast number of Chinese junks. In 1548, a city named Sakhon Buri was established at the mouth of the Tha Chin River. It was a center for recruiting troops from various seaside towns. The name of the city was changed to Mahachai when Klong (canal) Mahachai was dug in 1704 to connect the Tha Chin River to the city. Later, the city was renamed Samut Sakhon by King Rama IV but it is still popularly called Mahachai by its residents.

In this video I explore the main towns market, railway station and shrine before taking a ferry across the Tha Chin River in order to visit another railway station and some temples, one of which dates back to the Ayutthaya period.

A look inside the Maeklong Railway Market in Samut sakhon, Thailand, where traders have to pack up their goods every time a train passes by. The market has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. As well as the market traders selling fresh fruit and vegetables every day, thousands of tourists now visit the area to see the unusual scenes. Traders have to roll up their stall roofs when a train arrives then unfurl them once it has passed.

Thailand - The Ancient City - Samut Prakan

A visit through the Ancient City (Muangboran) museum in Samut Prakan. This was one of our favorite sites to see while traveling in Thailand. It's a bit of a drive from Bangkok, but well worth the trip. It's not as crowded as many of the other sites. You have to pay to enter the museum and also for your mode of transport throughout the museum. The prices are based on whether you bike, walk or take a golf cart. A golf cart is the most expensive, but highly recommended if you have a shorter timeframe in which to spend on the grounds. This was our case. However, we could have easily spent the whole day leisurely walking the museum as there is quite a bit of ground to cover and it was stunningly beautiful and peaceful.

TV21 Thailand - Samut Songkhram, Hua Hin, Nang Loeng Travel Vlog & Guide

People don't take trips, trips take people. - John Steinbeck

Last Aug. 29, I traveled back to Thailand to explore Samut Songkhram, Hua Hin, Lang Loeng, and Bangkok. Not only did I get to enjoy the scenic and fun tourist spots, but I found myself completely immersed in #AmazingThailand's rich culture once again.

A big thank you to #ThaiAirways and #TourismAuthorityofThailand for letting us see and enjoy your beautiful country once again. I am forever moved by what I have seen and done over there this time around.

I made sure to include the first part which shows our tour guide from #Hivesters sharing about his passion for sustainable tourism. If there is one thing I applaud, it is that Thailand is ever so proud of their country and ever so willing to share its beauty. Even more so, I am thrilled to see them find numerous ways to share their culture as it is, their locals as they are.

I always come back from a trip to Thailand, refreshed and inspired. It is my dream to one day see the same kind of tourism flourish (healthy tourism that is) in my own country.

Here's my travel diary of our five days in Thailand. I hope you enjoy this vlog. Oh and if you do, don't forget to hit the subscribe button for more of my videos.

Wat Lak Si Rat Samoson, Samut Sakhon, Thailand.

A sprawling warehouse-style temple, by the side of the Damnoen Saduak canal, in Samut Sakhon. The hall is lined with large iconography depicting the important deities of Thai Buddhism. A large wood effect reclining Buddha, a substantial Phra Rahu (the disembodied demon swallowing the moon), a substantial reclining, and brightly painted Kwa Im, along with smaller Buddha statues representing the different aspects. There is a popular seated Buddha, which from my preparation suggests is very old; however, I didn't include it in this trip due to time constraints.

Further along the canal, and under the road bridge is a decent looking boutique coffee shop, which is becoming increasingly popular here, once under the bridge, there is an open-roofed, faux rock enclosure, inside the structure if a massive seated Buddha, early Chinese style, sat under a running waterfall. Situated in alcoves around the wall are unfamiliar (to me) characters from folklore/Buddhist cannons.

I would have spent much longer here, given the time, I'm sure there was probably more to see in the older temple, behind which was a decent sized Thai market in the process of being set up (Saturday mid-afternoon), it could well be worth a visit later in the day.

Annual Vegetarian Festival - Samut Sakhon Thailand Sep 26 to Oct 4th 2022

Thai-Chinese people all over the country celebrate the vegetarian festival, or Kin Jay in Thai, every year for nine days and nights from the first to the ninth day of the ninth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. And this year, the festival falls on September 26 to October 4.

During this time, Thailand’s Chinese communities purify their bodies by cutting all meat and dairy out of their diet.

The vegetarian festival will be held in several other provinces like Bangkok’s Chinatown, Samut Prakarn, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Songkla, and the extreme ritual in Phuket.

In addition to the parade there many other things to do and see with the festival. There is a walking street with food vendors on the pier, live shows near the city pillar shrine and other attractions at the many Chinese shrines in the area. It’s a nice event for the local people to get out and celebrate.

Enjoy the video!
