Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world though it's comparably tiny. Beside the Galapagos Islands (which is the #1 tourist destination in Ecuador) the country has a lot more to offer, therefore I focussed on La Sierra in this video which is a paradise for landscape lovers and outdoor adventurers.

Another reason to visit the Andean region is that you have the chance to dive into the local culture and get a real feeling of Ecuador. The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.

Things to do in Ecuador covered in this video:
01) 00:36 - Otavalo market in Otavalo
02) 01:00 - Hike the Cuicocha lake
03) 01:25 - Middle of the World, Mitad del Mundo & Quitsato in Cayambe

10 BEST BEACHES IN ECUADOR

Home to the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountains and the Galapagos Islands, it comes as no surprise to learn that Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth – and that’s without even having mentioned its mesmerizing Pacific coastline.

All along the country’s idyllic coast, you’ll find scenic bays, glorious golden sands, and some of the best surfing conditions in the world. As such, its beautiful beaches are incredible to visit, and each has its own unique characteristics.

With over 2,200 kilometers of coastline for you to explore, Ecuador’s beaches are just waiting to be discovered.

24 Hours in SALINAS Santa Elena | ECUADOR

Plan to spend more than a day in Salinas Santa Elena Ecuador, I really wish I had because this beach town in Ecuador feels more like a city and has lots to do. But I know I'll be back so give me your recommendations for things to do in Salinas Ecuador.

We arrived in Salinas on the Guayaquil holiday weekend and we knew it would be busy but didn't realize it would be this busy.

Playas was definitely more chill. This is busier. But this beach is much cleaner. Even though when we got in today it was so jammed. There wasn’t even two feet between people.

Before Montanita became the hot beach town in Ecuador, long before that when it was still a fisherman’s town, Salinas was the place to be. The place to holiday. Where everyone from Guayaquil went.

So the best way I can compare Playas and Salinas. Playas is very much a small town, yes there is more and more development but it still feels like a beach town.

This is a city. This is a city with a beach on the end. Andres was saying that was actually the intention when they started developing here. Was looking at South Beach and Miami, how there’s a city with a beach on the end. And that is what it kind of feels like here, like we’re in a big noisy party beach city.

All right, so it is a little bit crazy outside. And so we decided instead of eating in a restaurant, we would just pick up some food and bring it back to Cafe Jazz. And we splurged. Like on a lot of meat.

So first, we went to Roca Parrilla and this place looks awesome. It was packed. The guy just grilling all of the food. It looked so fantastic that we ordered quite a bit.

This is a chuzo. So a chuzo in northern Ecuador is known as a pincho. This is just various meat. It looks like we've got some chorizo here, as long, as as well as some beef.

As well we've got some rice and we've got some menestra which is with beans instead of lentils as we were walking by Comida Tia Susi. It looked so good and it was packed with locals. We decided we also had to go there. And we got this huge thing for three dollars.

It's called a bandera and it's four different things. So we've got some fideos, which are noodles, we've got some rice. Seco de res, which is beef. So beef in a sauce and then it looks like this is pork also in a sauce. Three dollars, for all of this.

Cafe Jazz we are we are staying, they also have accommodation. The cafe is closed. So they said we could actually use the tables to eat here which I think is so nice.

We woke up. Sky is still kind of grey, but it's humid and we’re wearing shorts. We're going to have breakfast here.

Encebollado is one of my favorite dishes. Fish soup with lots of onions, lime and then, of course, some chifles for three dollars. And then Andres decided to get the bolon de verde, which looks really good. And then also a beef stew.

We're at Cevicheria d’Hugo. And yeah, big portion sizes.

So definitely need to come back to Salinas another time. We drove up this huge long line to go to La Chocolatera. Not waiting in line for this so… give me your best recommendations for Salinas, what should I do on the next trip.

SALINAS Day Trip + La Libertad Secret Garden in Ballenita | Ecuador

La Libertad Ecuador is a beach town just 15 minutes outside Salinas.

Although the town isn’t very pretty, La Libertad beach is beautiful with blue skies, families on the beach and calm water.

There are warnings of rip tides and so they built seawalls so Ecuadorians could go to the beach and swim. However, it's also the only place in Ecuador where they're have been shark attacks. Small sharks. Still shark attacks.

We stopped off for helado de crema or creamy ice pops on the malecon aka La Libertad waterfront. I got guanabana, which is soursop.

Soursop is supposed to cure everything from like upset stomach to cancer in many cultures. It takes like a fruit punch if red berry met banana, beach and lime. It is one of my favorite fruits in Ecuador. Andres got tazo. Taxo is a passion fruit but it's long, almost like a banana. But on the inside tons of seeds like you'd see in a passion fruit. This is good. These are 90 cents

There are beach vendors here selling food. It's probably much cheaper to eat and drink here. And it's just like for me, a beach day is supposed to be relaxing, not like a city party.

We're making our way up the coast to Ayampe. We are heading to the second beach in La Libertad called Ballenita, which means little whale.

Andres surprised me, we are at El Escondite, which means the hideout. It’s a secret garden cafe along the coast of Ecuador. It’s definitely a must visit in Ballenita. It’s gorgeous here.

They have almuerzo every day. So almuerzo in Ecuador is a set lunch. Two courses and a drink. It’s usually under three…$3.

And so we are going to have sopa de camaron, which is a shrimp soup with noodles. I can see some salty fresh cheese and some carrots.

Then for the main course, we have seco de pollo. Seco de pollo literally means dry of chicken. But seco in Ecuador is meat that has been braised or stewed in a sauce. So you get any kind of meat, it can be beef, chicken, goat, whatever. And then you always get two types of starches.

So right now we have rice and plantain. Today t his seco today is made with maracuya, which is passionfruit.

I would like to come back to Ballenita Ecuador, it’s a small beach town and the beach there is supposed to be more beautiful than La Libertad. And definitely not as big as Salinas. It reminded me a little bit more of Playas, but also very different at the same time.

Salinas City 2019, Ecuador Travel Guide [Aerial Drone]

Salinas is a coastal town on the western tip of Ecuador's Santa Elena province. It's known for its popular beaches, like San Lorenzo and Chipipe, which are both hugged by the palm-lined Malecón promenade. Near the promenade, the Museo de Ballenas features whales, dolphins and sea lions. Migratory humpback whales pass the rocky point of La Chocolatera, which offers panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean.
Salinas becomes very busy during the peak travel period (Dec–Apr). The town has a desert climate. Days are typically overcast and cooler Jun–Sep, though this is prime whale-watching season. Carnival (Feb/Mar) draws crowds as festival celebrations include good-natured play fights using water pistols and spray foam.

Things to do: La Chocolatera, Malecón Salinas, Chipipe, La Lobería, Playa del Mar Bravo, San Lorenzo Beach, Iglesia Cristo del Consuelo,

The Hidden Secrets of Salinas, Ecuador in the Low Season

When you think of Salinas, on the southwestern Pacific Coast of Ecuador, you picture big crowds and lots of water activity under a hot summer sun. But this is not the only side of Salinas. It is one of the most popular beach destinations for Ecuadorians and an increasing number of North American “snowbirds”, but us year-round residents get to experience something wonderful—Low Season!

The magic starts to happen slowly in March and April, as the visitors from other countries leave the beach and return home for their spring. Then the first week of May, the school year starts for Ecuadorian children, and things really change for the residents.

Salinas - the Miami Beach of Ecuador | Backpacking | Ecuador | South America

I decided to stay longer in Montanita which allowed me to get out and explore the nearby city of Salinas. It's an hour bus ride to Santa Elena, and then you take a taxi ride into Salinas. There are two popular beaches in Salinas: Playa Salinas and Playa Chipipe. Both are near each other. The vibe at Chipipe is more relaxed and the beach sand area is wider. In this video we explore Playa Salinas, which is the more convenient beach that borders a street lined with dining and shopping. It has more energy than Chipipe and felt busier.
