An amazing view of a beach near Saligao, Goa
Is this Saligao in the first place?
Viewer Frederick Noronha and Jo point out that Saligao doesn't seem to have a beach. Saligao is about 4-5 kms inland, and hence there's no question of it having a beach! I'm wondering if this is San Jacinto Island (not sure) en route to Vasco and the Dabolim airport?

Saligao is a census town in North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. It is surrounded by the villages of Porvorim, Parra, Guirim, Sangolda, Pilerne, Candolim, Calangute and Nagoa and is in Bardez Taluka of Goa. It is 10 km from Panjim the capital of Goa, 6 km from Mapusa the capital of Bardez Taluka, and 3 km from the Calangute beach. The word Saligao was ascertained by the Portuguese who modified its original name from Salgaon to Saligao. Sal meaning wooded forest and 'gao' meaning village and Saligao being a wooded village with an abundance of fruit bearing trees and various other plants hence the name. People of various religions live together in harmony and unity.
Just as other hamlets of North Goa, this village is very beautiful with its open stretch of paddy fields and coconut palms lining the narrow roads. The houses in Saligao are almost connected with each other almost like a maze with tiny pathways interspersed with greenery all round. The main crop of subsistence being sugarcane although a lot of cereals are also grown here. But in recent times, Sugarcane has given way to paddy fields whereas the Saligao Tinto is still a famous area for exchanging pleasantries between the village elders. There are 3 educational institutes namely the Mater Dei Institute, Lourdes Convent High School and St. Mary's Boys School. Although Saligao may be tiny in terms of land size, it gains heavily in its compactness, neatness and easy accessibility. There are interesting tales told in the village regarding All Souls Day wherein dead souls of people are believed to visit their respective homes on 1st November.

Located in West India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast. Goa is India's richest state with a GDP per capita two and a half times that of the country as a whole. It was ranked the best placed state by the Eleventh Finance Commission for its infrastructure and ranked on top for the best quality of life in India by the National Commission on Population based on the 12 Indicators.

Offbeat Things To Do In Goa | Vagator Beach, Thalassa, Mae De Deus Church, Reis Magos Fort |
The sixth day of our Goa trip was about travelling to Agonda in South Goa. On way we stopped at the Vagator beach view point, Ozran Beach, Thalassa, Mae De Deus Church and the Reis Magos Fort.
Stark, stern and yet with a glamorous charm all its own, the Mae de Deus or Mother of God Church is a breath-taking site. With its Gothic spires and pristine white walls, it reminds one of a fairytale castle. Situated amidst picturesque surroundings of the typical Goan countryside, this Church at Saligao, which is situated in the Bardez taluka, was built in 1873. It is amongst the finest in the Gothic style and is attractively illuminated at night.
Claim to fame : It is the finest example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Goa. It houses the miraculous statue of Mae de Deus (Mother of God) which was brought from the ruins of the convent of Mae de Deus at Old Goa.
Predating Fort Aguada by half a century, a second, smaller fort that crowns the headland jutting into the narrowest stretch of the Mandovi, almost facing the capital city Panjim, is the Reis Magos Fort. This Fort, surrounded by sturdy laterite walls studded with typically Portuguese turrets, was erected in 1551 to protect the narrowest point at the mouth of the Mandovi estuary. It was enlarged subsequently on different occasions and finally re-erected in 1707. The fort formerly accommodated viceroys and other dignitaries newly arrived from, or en route to, Lisbon, and in the early eighteenth century proved a linchpin in the wars against the Hindu Marathas, who were never able to take it. The bastion was used as a prison. Though far inferior in size to the fortress of Mormugao, yet standing on an eminence, it commands a splendid view all around. It is in a good state of preservation and is defended by 33 guns and accommodation for a small garrison. Towards the east, at a little distance from it, flows a spring with abundance of excellent water, while at its base rises the church of the Reis Magos, ascended by a beautiful flight of stairs.
This edifice was built on the ruins of a pagoda in 1550 by the Franciscans, with the sum allotted to them by the Government, and bears a crown on its façade, and the royal arms on its sanctuary and other places. The pavement is dotted with inscriptions, the most important of which, found in the sanctuary, indicated the spot enclosing the remains of Dom Luís de Ataíde, Count of Athoughia, who twice held the position of Viceroy of Portuguese India and Goa. This Fort stands on the north bank of the Mandovi at Reis Magos, and is very much visible from the Panjim side of the Mandovi river. It was used as a residence for viceroys and later converted to a fortress. It was occupied briefly between 1798-1813 by the British Army. It was subsequently abandoned by the military and served as a prison until 1993.
The Fort, originated as an armed outpost of the Adil Shah of Bijapur in 1493. When Bardez was conquered by the Portuguese in 1541, the Fort was built along with the church. From 1900, it lost its defensive role and was used as a jail and was finally abandoned in 1993 after which it was at the mercy of the elements, and had begun to crumble. Restoration work on the fort began in 2008 with the funds being provided by the UK-based Helen Hamlyn Trust, INTACH - a non-governmental organisation dealing with restorations of monuments, and the Government of Goa. Renowned architect Gerard da Cunha was hired to restore the fort. The fort is now converted into a cultural centre, besides being used a tourist attraction.
