10 Off Track Things To Do in Paris (For Intrepid Travellers)

Off Track Things To Do in Paris

Don’t miss our post:

1. Petite Ceinture Railway

This railway is only open to visitors in a couple of sections, but it’s definitely worth a visit. The railway is only open to visitors in a few places, but recently more areas of the railway have been opening up, so it’s definitely worth a visit.

2. National Archives

Inside the gardens is the State Museum of French History and inside the gardens is really peaceful, even though it’s located in a busy part of town, once you enter it’s actually very quiet inside.

These gardens have actually been called one of the most romantic places in Paris and while I don’t think I agree with that moniker, but nonetheless, the archives and the leafy gardens surrounding them are definitely worth a visit.

3. Promenade Plantee

This is yet another abandoned railway in the city of Paris and ever since Dariece and I visited the High-line in New York and the 606 in Chicago, we’ve loved these kinds of places.

This is actually the first elevated park built on an abandoned railway anywhere on Earth.

4. Wine and Cheese Inside of an Old Wine Cave

When we did the wine and cheese tasting in an old wine cave, we didn’t really know what to expect. It’s not too pretentious so if you want to enjoy some French wines with some delicious cheese in a unique atmosphere, then definitely check out this experience on Airbnb:

5. Food Tour On GetYourGuide

We didn’t have time to do this tour, but it’s highly rated so we plan to do it next time we visit Paris.

This 3-hour group tour takes you through the highlights of Paris while showing you the must-try foods and must-visit restaurants in the city. If you want to book it on GetYourGuide you can do so here:

6. Chef’s Table Dinner With a Parisian Chef

This is another Airbnb Experience and I have to say that it’s one of the best tours we’ve ever done. It’s set in an old atelier or art studio, that was once the home of a famous painter.

The experience takes you on a culinary journey through the life and history of that painter.

If you want to book that Airbnb Experience, you can do so here:

7. Do an Independent Sightseeing Walk of Paris

In our previous video ( we talked about the free walking tour with Sandemans, which is a great way to see Paris, but of course, you’re in a large group.

By doing your own independent walking tour you’ll be able to explore the city, without being with a crowd of other people.

Try the walk from 4th Arrondissement to the Pantheon and check out our article about all of the best Paris arrondissements here:

8. Stroll Along Canal St. Martin

Construction of this manmade waterway was finished in 1845 and it was originally commissioned by Napoleon himself. This is a great place to come and have a picnic around the local Parisians.

9. Check out the View From The Montparnasse Tower

At 210 meters high, The Montparnasse Tower is the tallest occupied tower in Paris. Many people check out the view from the Eiffel Tower, but then they miss having the beautiful and iconic Eiffel Tower in their photos and views.

To have a stunning view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower, head up to the top of Montparnasse and see 360-degree panoramic views of the city.

10. Get Lost in Paris

There are 20 different arrondissements in the city of Paris and they spiral outward from the centre of the city like the shell of an escargot. Start in the centre of the city and walk outward. All of Paris is walkable so you can simply get lost in the outer Arrondissements.

Places to see in ( Marseille - France ) Abbaye Saint Victor

Places to see in ( Marseille - France ) Abbaye Saint Victor

The Abbey of Saint Victor is a late Roman former monastic foundation in Marseille in the south of France, named after the local soldier saint and martyr, Victor of Marseilles. Tradition holds that in about 415, John Cassian founded two monasteries of St. Victor at Marseille, one for men (the later Abbey of St. Victor), the other for women. While Cassian certainly started monastic life in Marseille, he is probably not the founder of the abbey, as the archaeological evidence of Saint Victor only goes back to the end of the 5th century. Tradition also has it that it contains the relics of the eponymous martyr of Marseille from the 4th century. In reality, the crypta preserve highly valuable archaeological evidence proving the presence of a quarry exploited in Greek times. In the 5th century the monastery of St. Victor and the church of Marseille were greatly troubled by the Semipelagian heresy, that began with certain writings of Cassian, and the layman Hilary and Saint Prosper of Aquitaine begged Saint Augustine and Pope Celestine I for its suppression.

In the 8th or 9th centuries both monasteries were destroyed by the Saracens, either in 731 or in 838, when the then abbess Saint Eusebia was martyred with 39 nuns. The nunnery was never re-established. In 977, monastic life began again, due to bishop Honorat and the first Benedictine abbot Wilfred who submitted the abbey to the rule of Saint Benedict. It soon recovered, and from the middle of the 11th century its renown was such that from all points of the south appeals were sent to the abbots of this church to restore the religious life in decadent monasteries.

Saint Isarn (d. 1048), a Catalan monk successor as abbot to Saint Wiffred, began extensive building. He constructs the first upper church to which the tower belongs (called Isarn tower), today the access to the church. Isarn was instrumental by his intercession with Ramon Berenguer I, Count of Barcelona, in obtaining the release from Moorish captivity of the monks of Lérins Abbey. Blessed Bernard, abbot of St. Victor from 1064 to 1079, was one of the two ambassadors delegated by Pope Gregory VII to the Diet of Forchheim, where the German princes deposed Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. He was seized by one of the partisans of Henry IV and passed several months in prison. Gregory VII also sent him as legate to Spain and in reward for his services exempted St. Victor's from all jurisdiction other than that of the Holy See.

In 1794 the abbey was stripped of its treasures. The relics were burned, the gold and silver objects were melted down to make coins and the building itself became a warehouse, prison and barracks. All that now remains of the abbey is the church of St. Victor, dedicated by Pope Benedict IX in 1040 and rebuilt in 1200. The abbey was again used for worship under the First Empire and restored in the 19th century. The church was made into a minor basilica in 1934 by Pope Pius XI. The remains of Saint John Cassian were formerly in the crypt, with those of Saints Maurice, Marcellinus and Peter, the body of one of the Holy Innocents, and Bishop Saint Maurontius.

????????
The Abbey of Saint Victor, Paris, also known as Royal Abbey and School of Saint Victor, was an abbey near Paris, France. Its origins are connected to the decision of William of Champeaux, the Archdeacon of Paris, to retire to a small hermitage near Paris in 1108. He took on the life, vocation and observances of the Canons Regular, and his new community followed the Augustinian Rule.

????????

*Fabulous view of Marseille from Notre Dame de la Garde | മാർസെയ് നോട്രഡാമിലെ കാഴ്ചകൾ | Vlog #54*

Notre-Dame de la Garde or Our Lady of the Guard is a Catholic basilica in Marseille, France. It is the city's best-known symbol.

The site of a popular Assumption Day pilgrimage, it is also one of the most visited sites in Marseille.

Built at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 149 m (489 ft) limestone outcrop on the foundations of an ancient fort, it is visible from all parts of the city

Construction began in 1852 and was completed after 21 years. The basilica consists of a lower church or crypt in the Romanesque style and an upper church of Neo-Byzantine style.

A 41 m (135 ft) tall bell tower topped by a 12.5 m (41 ft) belfry has a monumental 11.2 m (37 ft) statue of the Madonna and Child. It is made of copper gilded with gold leaf.

The basilica suffered huge damage during the World War II and most of the restoration works were undertaken through donations received from generous patrons. It is not unusual for the people of Marseille to leave something for the basilica in their wills.

The inside of the upper church is intricately decorated with gold and green shades. Offering a breath taking view, this enhances the beauty of the silver statue of Virgin Mary at the centre.

The church is free to visit and can be accessed on foot or by colorbus, which drops you right at the foot of the hill where the church is located. You'll have to negotiate a few steps to reach the top, but the view from there makes it wroth every effort.

???????? Paris Walking Tour _ Alésia _ 14th arrondissement

Rue d'Alésia is a major street in the south of Paris, which runs along the entire east-west length of the 14th arrondissement. It is one of the few streets in Paris named after a French defeat, or more precisely, a Gallic defeat: the Battle of Alesia. Lined with acacia trees, the street extends to the east as Rue de Tolbiac into the 13th arrondissement, and to the west as Rue de Vouillé into the 15th arrondissement. It intersects Avenue du Général Leclerc at the Place Victor et Hélène Basch (or simply Alésia), the location of the Église Saint Pierre de Montrouge, as well as of the Alésia Métro station.
