Saint Rémy de Provence

(Originally live streamed on Facebook in October 2021)

To many, St Rémy de Provence represents the ideal provençal village, and it may very well be. There's a definite southern flavor there. Follow Véro as she explores part of the historic heart of town on a beautiful Saturday morning in the fall.

Erratum: Street names are in French and in the old Provençal language (not Occitan!) of course :-)

Glanum also has other remarkable structures, such as temples, baths, theatres, forums, houses and a dam. Some Roman elements can be found in other buildings in the village, such as the Château de Roussan and the Church of Saint-Pierre. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a fine example of a charming rural French village with a special character of its own. Definitely worth visiting, the village is located about 12 miles or 20 kilometers south of Avignon in the heart of Provence.

It’s a good destination any time, but extra special on a Wednesday morning with the outdoor food and flea market going strong, as we’ll show you coming up soon in the program.
Provence in the south of France is famous for its outdoor markets and you'll find the market at Saint-Rémy is one of the best.
But just simply walking the pedestrian lanes of this small town any day of the week is probably the most interesting thing you could do here and we are going to show you all the places to see.
The village center is small enough that you can just walk any place you like, it doesn't take long, and you won't get lost, but this map route gives you some idea of a sequence of lanes you can easily walk through the little town. That would only take you about one hour altogether to cover the entire village, but of course you’ll want to linger, do some shopping, take some pictures and look around.
Our tour was conducted by Provence Reservations.

The beautiful St Rémy-de-Provence, France

Our view of the wonderful little town of St Remy de Provence.

We returned after first visiting the town in 2012. For us it's just the right size, and a great base to explore the region.

It has so many restaurants, and plenty of bars, so explore by the day and relax in the evening. The town is host to a few different markets, during our visit there was an art market and an evening market selling all things Provencal.

France - Market day in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a town of about ten thousand inhabitants 25 kilometers south of Aix-en-Provence. On Wednesday mornings there is a very cozy market on the market square, in almost all the small streets in the old center and even beyond. The area around the town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Remy-de-Provence grew into a rich city with defensive walls and beautiful mansions. Vincent van Gogh lived there for a year. The Saint-Rémy-de-Provence market is lively and colorful: herbs, spices, olives, oils, fruits, vegetables, honey, flowers and curiosities are displayed on the Place de la République and in the streets of the historic center.

See our channel for hundreds of clips. More clips of France can be found here: Enjoy more markets by playing the clips in this playlist:

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence | VAN GOGH'S Trail and FOOD

Ravishing St-Rémy is about as cultured and chi-chi as Provence gets. Built from honey-coloured stone, and centred on a lovely, plane-shaded square lined by cafes, St-Rémy is a fantastic summer getaway.

Monastère St-Paul de Mausole, a monastery turned asylum is famous for one of its former residents – the ever-volatile Vincent van Gogh, who admitted himself in 1889. Walk the Van Gogh trail to see recreated works and where his inspiration in St Remy came from.
