Places to see in ( Tours - France ) Gare de Tours

Places to see in ( Tours - France ) Gare de Tours

Gare de Tours is a railway station serving the city of Tours, Indre-et-Loire department, western France. It is situated on the Paris–Bordeaux railway, the Tours–Saint-Nazaire railway, and the non-electrified Tours–Le Mans railway. The Gare de Tours is a terminus; most TGV trains only serve the nearby Gare de Saint-Pierre-des-Corps.

On 28 December 1984, the railway station was classified as monument historique. The architect of the 1898 station was Victor Laloux, with four allegorical limestone statues of cities by Jean Antoine Injalbert (Bordeaux and Toulouse) and Jean-Baptiste Hugues (Limoges and Nantes).

The Tours train station is a railway station French on the territory of the town of Tours , in the department of Indre-et-Loire , in region Center Loire Valley. The station is operated by the National Society of French Railways (SNCF). It is served by the TGV , Intercity trains and regional express trains (TER). Nevertheless, its situation as a terminal station necessitating a turnaround has caused it to lose traffic on certain trains that stop only at the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station . Travelers have the option to easily reach either station by a rail shuttle which has also become an urban means of transportation.

Established in impasse 49 meters above sea level, Tours station is at the origin of the line of Tours at Saint-Nazaire , located at kilometric point (PK) 235,720, and the line of Tours at Le Mans . Not located on the line from Paris-Austerlitz to Bordeaux-Saint-Jean , the train station of Tours is connected to it by two connections: the connection of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps to Tours towards Paris- Austerlitz and the connection from Tours to Monts (bifurcation of Bordeaux) towards Bordeaux-Saint-Jean . The train station of Tours is at PK 235,763 of the latter.

Until May 5, 1970, it was the terminus station of the Sables-d'Olonne line in Tours whose route of the terminal part was abandoned from the Joué-lès-Tours station , in favor of a connection created between this last station and the line from Paris-Austerlitz to Bordeaux-Saint-Jean , south of Tours.

The first station towards Saint-Nazaire is Saint-Genouph . In the direction of Le Mans, the first station opened is La Membrolle-sur-Choisille , separated by the now closed Fondettes - Saint-Cyr . In the direction of Paris-Austerlitz, the first station is that of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps and towards Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, that of Monts .

( Tours - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Tours . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Tours - France

Places to see in ( Tours - France ) Basilique Saint Martin

Places to see in ( Tours - France ) Basilique Saint Martin

Basilica of St. Martin is a Roman Catholic basilica dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, on whose tomb it was built. It is located in Tours, France. It was built to replace an earlier basilica, built in the Middle Ages and thoroughly demolished during the French Revolution. The basilica was built between 1886 and 1924 by French architect Victor Laloux in a neo-Byzantine style, on part of the site of the original Basilica which was repurchased by the Church. It was dedicated July 4, 1925. The Basilica of St. Martin of Tours is a religious building located in Tours (Indre-et-Loire), whose crypt is the tomb of Martin de Tours .

The former collegiate church Saint Martin of Tours, mainly dated from the xi th century, was abandoned, vandalized and turned into stables in 1793 and demolished after the collapse of the vaults in 1797, only two towers being retained. The current basilica, much more modest, was built between 1886 and 1902 in the neo-Byzantine style by architect Victor Laloux (inauguration in 1890 ). It is a building in limestone , granite and marble , covered with slate. For the murals, the architect addressed Pierre Fritel , and the decorative work was done with the help of the painter and decorator Adrien Lavieille , son of Eugène Lavieille . A monumental statue of Saint Martin, in bronze, intended to adorn the dome , was commissioned to the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Hugues ( Prix de Rome in 1875 ). Victor Thiébaut, foundry, delivered it in 1889. The building was consecrated as basilica on July 4 , 1925.

The remains of the former collegiate church (the Charlemagne tower , the clock tower and a cloister gallery) were classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840. The statue of Saint Martin crowning the dome, weakened by the storms of early 2014, was filed on February 17, 2014 to be restored; its base has been consolidated and the statue was put back in place on October 15, 2016, in anticipation of Saint Martin, celebrated every year on November 11th. The President of the French Republic has the honorary title of canon ( ad honores ) of the basilica.

The body of Saint Martin , who died in Candes , was transported to Tours and modestly buried on November 11, 397 , three days after his death, in a Christian cemetery outside the city, on the edge of the Roman road heading towards west. According to Gregory of Tours , Bishop Brice (lat. Brictius) built in 437 wooden building to house the tomb and coat ( screed ) Martin, called for this reason chapel. Noting the radiation of this sanctuary, Bishop Perpetuusinstead built the first basilica housing the tomb of Martin, whose dedication took place on 4 July 470 , ninety-nine years to the day after the accession of St. Martin in the Tours episcopate.

Martin's body was buried in a sarcophagus behind the altar of the new basilica. A large block of marble overhanging the tomb, donated by Bishop Euphronius of Autun (472-475), marked the location of the faithful assembled behind this altar and, according to Werner Jacobsen pilgrims installed on the atrium of the basilica which, against the use, was behind the church, that is to say on the side of the apse , the block being visible from a window of the apse wall.

The church was burned by the Normans on November 8, 853 , and again on June 30, 903 , after which the sanctuary was surrounded by a fortified wall, distinct from that of Tours , completed in 918 . There was a large accidental fire in 994 , which led to reconstruction, at the instigation of Hervé de Buzançais, then treasurer of Saint-Martin, and a new consecration in 1014 .

The two remaining towers were classified Historical Monument in 1840, confirmed classification in the Inventory in 1858, then 1862. The Catholic activist Léon Dupont (with the help of Count Pèdre Moisant and Stanislas Ratel ) announced the rediscovery of the tomb by Martin de Tours on December 14, 1860, which allowed to reinstate the martinian cult and to revive a project of restitution of the grandiose site.

Avignon, Provence, France complete movie

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Avignon in Provence in the south of France, was home to nine popes during the 14th century and is one of the most beautiful cities in France today, Avignon is a treasure house of palaces, museums and meandering lanes, surrounded by an old fortified wall that still protects it from modernization.
That is one of the beauties of a walled town in Europe: Not only did it protect the town from bandits and invaders during the Middle Ages, but in the 20th and 21st centuries the wall is protecting these historic centers from modernization. This is what the visitors want to see, and it brings in revenue for the city. Within the wall of Avignon you have a nicely preserved old town, and yet the same time, very modern shops that are way up to date and populated by hip people.
This city in the heart of beautiful Provence lays claim to dozens of historic monuments, especially the great Palace of the Popes which was gradually enlarged into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum open to the public.
This movie combines several shorter earlier movie to provide a complete picture of this wondrful city.
The pedestrian shopping district extends ten square blocks south, but save it for tomorrow so you can devote more of this first day to the historic sites and west side of town.
Energetic types might opt for a 10-block circular stroll through some of these quiet back alleys towards the small 14th-century church of St. Pierre and over to busy Rue Carnot, then walk back to the palace on Rue de la Croix.
Avignon’s Old Town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes, narrow residential streets and little back alleys, perfect for strolling. Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, especially in the shopping center just southeast of Place de l’Horloge.
This historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about one-half mile wide and long.
The curved shape of these streets will keep you guessing what’s around the bend, or which museum or monument is coming up next. Streets are level, riddled with little plazas, fountains, trees, some benches, and numerous cafes.
While this neighborhood is very old, the shops and galleries are up-to-date with modern interiors and contemporary European items for sale.
You'll find Avignon, the capital of Provence, is a perfect home base from which to visit other nearby places like Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Pont du Gard, Nimes, Uzès, Saint-Rémy, Les Baux-de-Provence and Marseilles, which we cover in other movies.
