Sainte Maxime - Golfe de Saint-Tropez - Côte-d'Azur
Sainte-Maxime est une commune française située dans le département du Var, en Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
Avec 13 968 habitants en 2017, il s'agit de la ville la plus importante du golfe de Saint-Tropez. Ses habitants sont appelés les Maximois et les Maximoises.
Sainte-Maxime, adossée à son port de plaisance, est une station balnéaire très prisée, arrimée au Massif des Maures par un vaste espace boisé qui s’étend bien au-delà des collines environnantes.
La station borde la rive nord du golfe de Saint-Tropez. Protégée du mistral par les collines boisées du massif des Maures, elle s'ouvre au sud. Le sud de la commune, en bordure de la mer Méditerranée, est à une altitude proche de zéro.
Plusieurs vallées, des fleuves côtiers traversant le territoire communal jusqu'à la mer, dans le sens nord-sud, sont entourées des collines du massif des Maures. Le point culminant de Sainte-Maxime, le Peigros, proche du col de Gratteloup, a une altitude de 526 mètres. Plusieurs fleuves côtiers traversent la commune de Sainte-Maxime : le Préconil, se jetant dans la mer Méditerranée près du port, ainsi que son affluent, le « Vallon de Bouillonnet » ; la Garonnette, se jetant dans la mer Méditerranée en limite de commune, à l'est, près des Issambres ; le « Vallon du Puèro ».

Places to see in ( Sainte Maxime - France )
Sainte Maxime is a commune and city in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. I.e. on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) in southeastern France 90 km (56 mi) west from Nice and 130 km (81 mi) east from Marseille. The small town is south facing at the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. In the north the Massif des Maures mountain range protects it from cold winds of the Mistral. Sainte Maxime was founded around 1000 AD by the Monks from the Lérins Islands outside Cannes. They built a monastery and named the village after one of the Saints of their order - Maxime. Fishing was the mainstay for the inhabitants but during the early 19th century increasing amounts of lumber, cork, olive oil and wine was shipped to Marseilles and to Italy.
The village grew and in the 20th century it started to attract artists, poets and writers who enjoyed the climate, the beautiful surroundings and the azure blue water. In front of the old town you find the characteristic tower - La Tour Carrée - built by the monks in the early 16th century to protect the village from invaders. With an addition of a battery of cannons and with the Tour du Portalet in Saint Tropez the whole bay was protected. As late as in the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon ordered a restoration of the battery while also adding cannons on the Lérins Islands. The tower is now a museum.
On August 15, 1944, the beach of Sainte Maxime was at the centre of Operation Dragoon, the invasion and liberation of the Southern France during World War II. Attack Force Delta, based around the 45th Division, landed at Sainte Maxime. There was fierce house to house fighting before the Germans were decimated and eventually surrendered. By the foot of the Harbour pier and by the beach La Garonette (far east in the commune), there are memorials at the respective landing places honoring the US troops. At the Garonette beach, but formally in Les Issambres, (Roquebrune-sur-Argens commune), the sailing centre is named La Batterie, as it was the location of a German artillery battery.
Nowadays, tourism is the largest source of revenue for Sainte Maxime, but the city remains lively all year round with 13 519 inhabitants (2007). There is the old town with shops, markets, restaurants, bars and cafés, opposite the harbour. On the pier, there are marine shops and an upscale restaurant. Here, there is also fast boat transportation with Les Bateaux Verts to Les Issambres, St Tropez and Port Grimaud. There is a shoreline promenade with parks, pine trees, boulodrome Prince Bertil, the tourist office and the city beaches, as well as a Casino with its own piece of white sand.
In addition to the city beaches, there are the Blue Flag supervised ones. On the west side, The Croisette has a sailing school. On the east side of the town are La Nartelle, La Plage des Eléphants and La Garonette (also called Val D'Esquieres), which all provide water-skiing and Jet-ski activities. In addition, there are several smaller beaches that are unsupervised. All adding up to 10 km of publicly accessible shoreline.

‘막달라 마리아’(Marie Madeleine)의 유해를 소장한 가톨릭 역사에서 아주 중요한 곳이다. 지중해를 건너 프랑스에 도착한 마리아는 ‘생트 봄므’ (Sainte-Baume), 프로방스 사투리로 성스러운 동굴이라고 불리는 곳에서 30년 정도 기도하며 조용히 지내다가 사망하자 성녀를 이 성당의 지하 납골당에 안치하면서 순례객들이 끊이지 않고 찾아온다.
몰려드는 순례자들을 맞아들이기 위하여 성당을 건설하였고, 710년경 이슬람 군대가 이 지방으로 쳐들어오자 막달라 마리아의 유골이 파괴될 것을 우려하여 가벽 뒤에 숨겨 놓았다가 1279년에 ‘샤를르 당주’ (Charles d`Anjou)에 의하여 재발견되어 현재 납골당 위치에 성지 순례당을 세운다.
‘앙리 2세’와 ‘카트린 드 메디치’의 아들로 왕위에 오른 ‘샤를 9세’가 추기경들과 왕궁 전체가 1564-1566년 프랑스 왕국을 순방하면서 이 곳을 방문한다.
‘생트 마리 마들렌느’(Sainte-Marie-Madeleine) 성당은 프로방스 지방의 백작 ‘샤를 당주’의 지원으로 순례객들을 맞이할 목적으로 세워지는데 1295년 공사를 시작하여 프로방스 지방에서 가장 거대한 고딕성당으로 1532년에 지금의 모습으로 된다.
나사로의 동생이며 마르타의 동생인 마리 마들렌느는 해롯 왕의 탄압을 패해 피신한다. 동생들과 함께 돛단배를 타고 지중해를 건너 ‘생트 마리 드 라 매르’ 땅끝 마을에 닿았고 프로방스 지방에 그리스도를 전파하면서 ‘생트 봄’(Sainte-Baume) 동굴에서 생활한다.
‘엑스’ 지방의 초대 주교인 동생 ‘막시맹 성자’(Saint-Maximin)가 자신이 거주하던 ‘생-막시맹-라-생트-봄’(Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume)의 예배당으로 ‘막달라 마리아’의 유해를 옮겨오면서 이 마을에 순례자들이 찾아오고 수많은 기적이 일어난다.
858년에 세워진 ‘베즐레 수도원’ (Abbaye de Vézelay)에서 1040년부터 ‘막달라 마리아’의 유해를 소유하였다고 주장하면서 ‘생 막시맹’이 보관한 성녀의 유해와 진품시비가 있었다. 전설에 의하면, 8세기 말엽에 이슬람이 ‘엑스’(Aix) 지방을 약탈하는 과정에서 ‘바딜롱’(Badilon)이라는 수도사가 ‘막달라 마리아’의 유해를 빼내어 ‘베즐레 수도원’에 기증하였고 ‘레옹 9세’ (Léon IX) 교황이 인정하면서 수많은 순례자들이 찾아온다.
프로방스 지방이 이슬람 군대에 약탈당하던 시기에 ‘막달라 마리아’의 유해를 숨겨두었던 것을 시칠리아 왕이면서 프로방스 백작이던 ‘샤를르 2세’ (Charles II)의 지원으로 성녀의 유해를 발견하기 위하여 대대적인 발굴작업을 진행하여 1279년 발견하였고, 당시 ‘보니파키우스 8세’(Boniface VIII) 교황이 진품이라고 인정하면서 순례자들이 ‘생 막시맹’ 마을로 순례자들이 몰려든다.
프랑스 대혁명 시기에 수도원을 폐쇄하고 성당은 창고로 사용한다. 나폴레옹 1세의 동생 ‘루시앵 보나파르트’ (Lucien Bonaparte)가 이 지역 담당관이었는데 당시 가장 권력자이던 ‘바라스’(Barras) 장군이 수도원과 성당의 물건들을 가져가기 위해서 이 마을을 방문하였을 때, 성당의 파이프 오르간으로 프랑스 애국가 ‘라 마르세예즈’ (La Marseillaise)를 연주한다. 웅장한 파이프 오르간으로 연주된 ‘마르세예즈’에 감동된 바라스 장군의 결정으로 다행히 파이프 오르간은 다행히 파괴를 면하게 된다.

현재 막달라 마리아의 유해는 면벽 수도하다가 사망한 ‘생트 봄 동굴’ (Grotte de la Sainte-Baume)에 일부가 있고, 베즐레 성당과 로마 시내에 ‘지오바니 교회’(San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini)에는 성녀의 발이 보관되어 있다.
팔레스타인을 탈출하여 ‘카마르그’(Camargue) 늪 지대의 ‘생트 마리 드 라 매르’(Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer)에 도착하면서 예수의 피가 스며든 골고다 언덕의 흙과 자갈을 담아서 가져온 것으로 알려진 ‘성유병’(Sainte Ampoule)은 애석하게도 1904년 10월 도난 되었다.
정확히 성금요일부터 부활일까지 본래 검은색인 돌이 붉은색으로 변하고 피를 흘리는 기적이 일어나는데 ‘프랑스와 1세’, ‘루이 11세’ ‘샤를 7세’. ‘루이 13세’를 비롯하여 태양왕 ‘루이 14세’도 이 기적을 보기 위하여 방문한 기록이 있다.

It is a very important place in Catholic history as it houses the remains of ‘Mary Magdalene’ (Marie Madeleine). After crossing the Mediterranean and arriving in France, Maria lived quietly and prayed for about 30 years in a place called 'Sainte-Baume' (Sainte-Baume), a sacred cave in the Provençal dialect. When she died, she was placed in the underground charnel house of this cathedral, and pilgrims continued to come to her. It comes without it.
A cathedral was built to welcome the flock of pilgrims, and when the Islamic army invaded the region around 710, the remains of Mary Magdalene were hidden behind the walls for fear of being destroyed, and in 1279, Charles d'Anjou. It was rediscovered and a pilgrimage hall was built at the current location of the charnel house.
‘Charles IX’, who ascended the throne as the son of ‘Henri II’ and ‘Catherine de’ Medici’, along with the cardinals and the entire royal palace, visited this place during his tour of the Kingdom of France in 1564-1566.

The Sainte-Baume is a mountain ridge spreading between the départements of Bouches-du-Rhône and Var in southern France. Its summit is 1147 metres high.
The French tradition of Saint Lazare of Bethany is that Mary Magdalene, her brother Lazarus, and Maximinus, one of the Seventy Disciples and some companions, expelled by persecutions from the Holy Land, traversed the Mediterranean in a frail boat with neither rudder nor mast and landed at the place called Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer near Arles. Lazarus came to Marseille and converted the whole of Provence. Magdalene is said to have retired to a cave on a hill by Marseille, La Sainte-Baume , where she gave herself up to a life of penance for thirty years. The cave is now a Christian pilgrimage site.

Basilique de Saint Maximin et cloître du couvent Royal
La basilique date du XIIIe siècle, c'est un chef-d'oeuvre de l'art gothique Provençal. Elle renferme dans sa crypte les reliques de Sainte-Madeleine à laquelle la basilique est dédiée et nous offre un orgue exceptionnel.
C'est le troisième tombeau de la Chrétienté. Le couvent Royal et son cloître jouxtent la basilique.
