Top Ten Must See Places in Saint Louis in Senegal. #visitsenegal #senegal #tourism #photography #langue #barbarie #guetndar #lompoul #djoudj #river #bird #UNESCO #World #Heritage #jollofrice #teranga #awaauto #awaautospace #aibd #gastonberger #faidherb #bridge #awaauto #awaspace

Flirting with the Desert, the Atlantic Ocean and the river Senegal, is Saint Louis – one of the most beautiful places to visit in Senegal. Saint Louis is history, beauty and character. Here are our top ten must see places in Saint Louis.

The city town centre
Saint-Louis was the capital of French West Africa from 1895 until 1902. The city centre has inherited the French colonial architecture which is one of the main assets of tourism. To protect that heritage, the city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. You will not visit the city centre without crossing the emblematic and more and more controversial Faidherbe Bridge.

Guet Ndar
The settlement of Guet Ndar dates from around 1450 and was a meeting and departure point for Muslim pilgrims traveling to Mecca in Arabia. People in Guet Ndar are mostly fishermen that live in fishing communities on the Langue de Barbarie. Don’t miss out on the annual reggata that takes place on the little branch of the river, between the Island and the Langue de Barbarie.

The Langue de Barbarie
The Langue de Barbarie takes its name from an older name for the land of the Berbers. The Langue de Barbarie, a 600 km (370 mi) long stretch of sand from Nouadhibou in Mauritania to Saint-Louis, over a stretch of 25 km (16 mi) separates the lower Senegal River from the Atlantic Ocean. Its vegetation mainly consists of Filao trees, propagated to prevent soil erosion in sandy and salty soils.

National park of the ‘langue de barbarie’
This park, which is 20 square kilometres large, occupies the southern point of the Langue de Barbarie, the estuary of the Senegal river and part of the continent. It hosts thousands of water birds like cormorants, brushes, pink flamingos, pelicans, herons and ducks each year. Furthermore, that area of Saint Louis has one of the best hotels in the country; such as ‘Ocean et Savane’ and Zebra Bar Camping where one can experience the Atlantic Ocean, the river Senegal and some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Gaston Berger University
Gaston Berger University is located some 12 km outside Saint-Louis, it was the second university established in Senegal after Dakar’s Cheikh Anta Diop University. Originally the University of Saint-Louis, it was renamed for Gaston Berger, a great French-Senegalese philosopher.

Djoudj national parc for bird watching
Djoudj national parc is the world's third largest ornithological park. It is located 60 kilometers north of Saint-Louis. About 3 million migrating birds of 400 species visit it each year. This is one not to miss.

Museum of photography
The Museum of photography is a fascinating place in the city of Saint-Louis. From politics to history, geography or social, the museum will definitely take you on a virtual journey; with sublime and diverse photographs. It is a must see in Saint Louis!

Jean Mermoz Museum
The Jean Mermoz Museum is a small museum in a beautiful and historic building which also houses the regional Tourist Office. This is an invitation to re-discover the history of airmail. You can all be introduced to the fascinating history and journey of Jean Mermoz.

The ‘village Artisanal’
Imagine doing your shopping while observing the craftsmen at work, such is the particularity of the craft villages. The ‘village Artisanal’ of Saint Louis hosts over thirty stands; from Woodcarvers, dressmakers, jewelers, or manufacturers of recycled objects, you name it.

The Lompoul Desert
The Lompoul Desert is beautiful, calming, comfortable and has some of the most magnificent open sky as we never see elsewhere. Bring your sledges and enjoy the sand dunes. Evening by the fire, sunset in absolute silence. It is an experience that must be lived at least once.

By the way don’t leave Saint Louis without trying their famous ‘ceebu jen’. Apparently, they have the best Jollof rice in the world and the warmest Teranga in Senegal. Don’t wait any longer… Book the next flight to Senegal… the Siren of Saint Louis is calling.

SENEGAL: From SAINT-LOUIS to DAKAR. Stuck again + 6 top things to do in Dakar // EPS 4.

After crossing into Senegal we visited the vibrant fishing town Saint-Louis and famous Zebra Bar, which is a campsite most overland travelers visit when traveling west africa. On the way to Dakar we realized, that the clutch of my travel partner we repaired in Mauretania was still broken – so we prepared for a long stay in Senegals capital Dakar to send clutch discs from Europe.

Meanwhile we went on a burocratic journey through town to stamp our carnet de passage (customs document), apply for visas and explore the highlights of Dakar.

Join me for a tour through the city with my top things to do:
1. Visit the village des arts and buy some art
2. Eat at famous restaurant Lagon Nr. 1
3. Go surf at Dakar's beaches
4. Shop traditional waxed cotton fabric at Marché HLM and get some clothes made
5. Visit Gorée Island ( Île de Gorée ) and learn about it's history in the transatlantic slave trade
6. Shop at local food markets like Marché Kermel
