Amiens is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France.

Historic capital of Picardy, it is, with its 134,706 inhabitants (at the last census in 2019) called Amiénois, the main city of the department, the second in the region after Lille and the twenty-seventh of France. Located inside the triangle Paris - London - Brussels, it is the center of the metropolitan pole of Grand Amiénois with nearly 400,000 inhabitants1,2.

First city of France in number of UNESCO heritage inscriptions3, Amiens is famous for its Notre-Dame Cathedral, a jewel of Gothic art and one of the largest cathedrals in the world4.

Nicknamed the little Venice of the North because of the many canals that cross it and the hortillonnages (set of floating gardens covering 300 hectares), Amiens offers a rich heritage and picturesque neighborhoods, witnesses of a two-thousand-year history. Since 1992, the City of Art and History label has rewarded the protection and enhancement of this heritage.

The contemporary image of the city is strongly linked to three activities that radiate beyond its borders: its status as the historic capital of Picardy, its university with more than 26,000 students5 and the vitality of its cultural life driven by infrastructure and events of national scope.

Amiens - largest cathedral in France and charming Saint-Leu district | Northern France Part 6

Amiens, the capital of Picardy, welcomes us with its mighty cathedral. But first, let's turn to the picturesque Saint-Leu district. This medieval district is criss-crossed by many of the Somme's branches and canals, which is why it is also called the Little Venice of northern France. Strolling through the charming alleyways with the colorful half-timbered houses, we find many small but interesting shops, antiquarian bookshops and junk shops. Here on the banks of the Somme, a few steps from the university, is also the right place for a drink or a delicious meal. When night falls, theatre, concerts and performances create a lively atmosphere.

Then we come back to the cathedral, which is now beautifully lit by the setting sun. But it is already closed, so we have to postpone the visit of the interior until the next day. In the late evening there is another highlight, the Chroma light show. The facade of the cathedral is illuminated with brightly glowing and then mysteriously dark colored illuminations that give the church a magical aura. Sometimes it looks like the cathedral is on fire. Our hotel room has a direct view of the cathedral, so we can watch the show from the comfort of our room. An unforgettable experience!

The next morning we take a closer look at this Gothic masterpiece. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the largest in France. The internal volume of the gigantic structure is twice that of the Notre-Dame church in Paris! It is also the cathedral with the tallest nave, measuring 42 m to the ceiling.
It was built in the 13th century at a time when the city of Amiens was very prosperous. The construction went quite quickly, so that the most important parts were already completed at the end of the 13th century. Many other churches took several centuries to build and some are still under construction today. That is why the architecture of the cathedral is characterized by a very uniform style.

The three portals are each named after the main figures located on the door pillars: Saint Firmine on the left, Christ the Redeemer in the middle, and Our Lady on the right. In the upper part there is a large rose window with a diameter of 13 meters.

A distinctive feature of the church is the 234 meter long black labyrinth path on the floor. It served the believers as a symbolic pilgrimage path, after which one received the coveted indulgence of sins. This was very practical and much less expensive than a real pilgrimage.

A world famous sculpture in the church is the weeping angel, which is part of a tomb in the ambulatory. It represents the transience of life and is a well-known postcard motif for mourning cards.

You can find the city tour in Komoot:

Next week we travel along the coast of the English Channel through well-known seaside resorts such as Le Touquet and Dieppe and to the Somme estuary at Le Hourdel. The video can be found here:

Today, Quartier Saint Leu is a bustling hub of activity, with a vibrant arts scene, numerous restaurants and cafes, and plenty of cultural attractions.

Immerse yourself in nature
ON THE EDGE OF THE TOWN
With its 300 hectares of water gardens, Amiens is known as the Venice of the North.
In the old days they were just market gardens, growing leeks, cabbages and carrots for the townspeople.
Today only a handful of 'hortillons' (market gardeners) remain to earn a living cultivating the dark and fertile soil of the Hortillonnages.
Every Saturday they sell their produce at a water market in the Saint-Leu district. The place to go and buy good fresh vegetables for making the famous Hortillonnages soup. On the 3rd Sunday in the month the market gardeners dress in traditional costume and go down the Somme, as in former times, in their 'barques à cornet' (boats with one raised pointed end). When they reach the Quai Bélu they sell their vegetables on the Place Parmentier, across the river.
Many of the plots have become pleasure gardens for townspeople seeking outdoor space in which to relax. Families and friends come here on Sundays for a picnic, barbecue or to go fishing.

Places to see in ( Amiens - France ) Parc Saint Pierre

The St. Pierre Park is a public park of Amiens in France. It has replaced the semi-wild space around the pond of Saint-Pierre, once paradise of fishermen and campers. Designed in 1993 by the landscape architect Jacqueline Otsy, it is a green area of 22 ha, along the Somme canal, near the Saint-Leu district, the Faubourg Saint-Pierre and hortillonnages .

It is a contemporary garden. A footbridge, under the Beauvillé bridge, makes it possible to reach the pier of Hortillonnages. Another, to the south, spans the Somme and connects the park to the Saint-Leu district.

Designed according to the standards of sustainable development (no watering is to be done, no phytosanitary products are used, etc.), this project was awarded the Landscape Award, awarded by the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development in 2005 .

In 1994, the park won the Urban Parks category award. The space is organized around the Promenade des jours, 620 meters long, it is divided into several gardens:

to the west, the Labyrinth reproduces, with its clear slabs, that of the cathedral
to the east, the Glacis des Ginkgos stops at the amphitheater of greenery.
the green rooms, squares with hedges shelter various sports activities: basketball, tennis, roller-skate.
the meadow and the playground are the domain of the children

Amiens is located in northern France, near the Somme River. The city is the capital of the Somme province and the province of Picardie. Amiens is about 120 km from Paris, the capital, and 100 km from Lille to the southwest.
Venice of the North seems like a hard-to-promote title. But Amiens, with its floating gardens and beautiful canal area, does a great job.
Catch a schooner and cruise through Hortillonnages, historic medieval farmland reclaimed from former marshes, or stop at a canal-side café on a cobbled street in Saint-Leu.
And we haven't even mentioned the World Heritage Amiens Cathedral, which has France's tallest nave and is brimming with priceless Gothic and Renaissance art.
It also has many international brand shops, and it is the city of the President of the Republic of France, Emmanuel Macron and his wife
