Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a fishing port on the Basque coast and now a famous resort, known for its architecture and sandy bay. The town is located south of Biarritz, on the right bank of the river Nivelle opposite to Ciboure. It is part of the Basque province of Labourd and the urban area of Bayonne. Socoa Bay is the only sheltered harbor between Arcachon and Spain. Thanks to its dykes which protect it from the wrath of the Atlantic Ocean, it is favored by bathers.
The Fort of Socoa in Ciboure is an important building in the history of the city. The history of the Fort begins under Henri IV. Anxious to protect Saint-Jean-de-Luz from the Spanish enemy, he orders to build a fortress.

Hi, Walkers! I'm Jay, Relaxed Walker. Welcome to my channel.

► The French #Basque Country:
The French Basque Country, or Northern Basque Country (Basque: Iparralde (lit. 'the Northern Region'), French: Pays basque, Spanish: País Vasco francés) is a region lying on the west of the French department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Since 1 January 2017, it constitutes the Basque Municipal Community (Basque: Euskal Hirigune Elkargoa; French: Communauté d'Agglomeration du Pays Basque) presided over by Jean-René Etchegaray [fr].

It includes three former historic French provinces in the north-east of the traditional Basque Country totalling 2,967 km2 (1,146 sq mi): Lower Navarre (French: Basse-Navarre; Basque: Nafarroa Beherea), until 1789 nominally Kingdom of Navarre, with 1,284 km2 (496 sq mi); Labourd (Lapurdi), with 800 km2 (310 sq mi); Soule (Zuberoa), with 785 km2 (303 sq mi). The population included in the Basque Municipal Community amounts to 309,723 inhabitants distributed in 158 municipalities.

It is delimited in the north by the department of Landes, in the west by the Bay of Biscay, in the south by the Southern Basque Country and in the east by Béarn (although in the Béarnese village of Esquiule, Basque is spoken), which is the eastern part of the department. Bayonne and Biarritz (BAB) are its chief towns, included in the Basque Eurocity Bayonne-San Sebastián Euroregion. It is a popular tourist destination and is somewhat distinct from neighbouring parts of the southern Basque Country, since it was not industrialized as Biscay or Gipuzkoa and remained agricultural and a beach destination.

Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France )

A renowned resort on the Basque coast, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is also renowned for its history and its architectural heritage. Indeed, the Church of St John the Baptist was where the marriage of Louis XIV with the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain was celebrated on 9 June, 1660. A Historical Monument, the building boasts an exceptional décor and contains a monumental baroque altarpiece carved in gilt wood and three floors of oak galleries... Gorgeous!

Then it's time to explore the shopping streets of the old corsair town, before admiring the iconic façades of Saint-Jean-de-Luz as well as those of the houses of the Infanta and Louis XIV. Open to visitors, the Italian-style house of the Infanta Joanoenia, which was the residence of the Infanta of Spain in June 1660 at the time of her wedding to Louis XIV, contains the so-called Infanta's Chamber and a beautifully decorated 17th-century lounge. Built in 1643 by a wealthy local ship-owner, Louis XIV's house, Lohobiague-Enea, where the young monarch stayed at the time of his wedding, invites you to discover the history of Saint-Jean-de-Luz as you explore its richly furnished rooms.

After sightseeing, enjoy a moment to enjoy the famous macaroons in the town or take a break at a café terrace on the lovely Place Louis XIV, before continuing your journey towards the picturesque fishing port, then go for a stroll on the Promenade Jacques Thibaud, along the beach and past the elegant beachfront villas. The vast sandy beach of Saint-Jean-de-Luz will undoubtedly delight relaxation fans and water sports enthusiasts

Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France ) Maison Louis XIV

Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France ) Maison Louis XIV

A magnificent house of the seventeenth century, Lohobiague-enea, better known under the name of Maison Louis XIV, is located near the harbour in the historical center of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Place Louis XIV.

It was built in 1643 by a wealthy shipowner, Joannis Lohobiague, whose family owned several fishing boats. Characterized by its two corner turrets topped with slate roofs, its main facade in stone, a truly classical style, is said to be the façade Louis XIII.

Lohobiague-Enea is intimately linked to the marriage of Louis XIV with Maria Theresa of Austria, Infanta of Spain, since it is in this house that the young monarch lodged for over a month. Imagine the activity of the house throughout this period: Louis XIV lived there, complying to protocol, and messengers, lords, courtiers and churchmen came and went regularly.

It still belongs to the descendants of the owner. They have opened the house to visitors for a part of the year and have therefore been able to upkeep the furniture. The grandest house in town was built in 1643 by a wealthy shipowner, but its main claim to fame is as the house where Louis XIV lived out his last days of bachelorhood before marrying María Teresa. It's awash with period detail and antiques. Half-hour guided tours (with English text) depart several times daily in July and August.

Saint Jean de Luz, Basque Country, France: Cutest Place on Earth

St. Jean de Luz is called Donibane Lohitzun in the Basque language. It's located in the Basque region (Pays Basque), in the southwestern corner of France. This town is one of the most popular of the French Basque Country. Nancy Zubiri lived in St. Jean de Luz for a few months many years ago and she came back recently for a day-long visit. She thinks this town is one of the cutest places on earth, with its beautiful, tranquil beach, important fishing port, traditional Basque style architecture and plenty of history. The Infanta Marie Therese of Spain was married to Louis XIV of France in St. Jean de Luz in 1660, in order to repair the long standing rift between the two countries. Today, St. Jean de Luz also has some amazing seafood restaurants. It maintains its Basque traditions through its annual festivals, the architectural style of the buildings and the cuisine served in its restaurants.

Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France ) saint jean de luz Beach

St Jean de Luz is one of the most reputed seaside destinations on the Basque coast. It is familial and sporty and animated all year long thank to many festivals and thalassotherapy center. Its large beach located downtown attracts families thanks to three dams rendering the Atlantic more calm for swimming. The view is out of the ordinary with a coast of picturesque houses and Basque charm and another view of Socoa, another destination with its fort.

Outside of the city all the way to Guétary, we find several sand beaches offering diversity for everyone including surfers who will find the right wave for their levels. We can also benefit from the mountainous environment as the bay of St Jean de Luz is surrounded by the Labourd and Guipuzcoa mountains.

St Jean de Luz is also a touristic base for discovering Pays Basque and even for going to the north of Spain, located less than thirty minutes away. North of St Jean de Luz, the beaches of Biarritz make up some of the most beautiful beaches of the Pyrenees Atlantiques, from Anglet the beaches extend over several kilometers (however, the destination is is very animated in the summer).

Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France ) Ciboure

Ciboure is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. It lies across the river Nivelle from the harbour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

Ciboure is, like its neighbour, a pretty town with many buildings of the traditional Basque style of Lapurdi. The sixteenth century church of St Vincent has an octagonal tower, Basque galleries and a Baroque altarpiece. Adjacent to Ciboure is the Fort of Socoa, a 15th-century fortress built by Louis XIII.

Ciboure was the birthplace of:

Maurice Ravel
Martin de Hoyarçabal
Anne Marie Palli
Philippe Bergeroo
Michel de Sallaberry

Ciboure was the residential place of American Time magazine journalists and authors Charles Wertenbaker and Lael Tucker Wertenbaker, their son Christian and daughter Timberlake Wertenbaker, who grew up in the Basque Country and were educated in France.

Tiny Tour | Saint-Jean-de-Luz France | Driving around in the town 2019 Autumn

Hi guys, today we made a little drive-though in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Basque name: Donibane Lohizune) . It is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France, in Basque province of Labourd (Lapurdi). It is located on the Atlantic coast of France, just a few kilometres from the border with Spain. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is known for its royal wedding connection. In 1659, Cardinal Mazarin spent several months in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, from where he would embark on almost daily trips to the island of Faisans in the River Bidassoa (near modern-day Hendaye) for Franco-Spanish meetings that resulted in the Treaty of the Pyrenees, one clause of which was the marriage of Louis XIV to Maria Theresa, the Infanta of Spain.
