Welcome to the enchanting tapestry of St Albans, a city that whispers tales of Roman glory and medieval majesty through its cobblestone streets and ancient structures.

Let's turn back the clock to around 50 AD, when this vibrant city was known as Verulamium, a Roman settlement boasting grandeur that would make even Julius Caesar raise an eyebrow. Verulamium was the real deal – a bustling hub with theaters echoing laughter, forums buzzing with debate, and Roman bathhouses where citizens soaked away their worries.

Fast forward to the 3rd century, and meet the legendary St. Alban. This chap wasn't your average Joe; he sheltered a Christian priest, sealing his fate as Britain's first Christian martyr. The city, grateful for his sacrifice, adopted his name – St Albans. Imagine a Roman superhero origin story, but with togas instead of capes.

Now, let's step into Verulamium Park, a place where the echoes of Roman footsteps still linger. Ruins of ancient walls and an amphitheater transport you back in time, letting you stroll through the very stones where Roman citizens once walked. It's like unlocking a secret level in a historical video game.

Fast forward again to the medieval extravaganza. The Normans rode into town in the 11th century, shaking things up like knights in shining armor. St Albans Cathedral took centre stage, a colossal masterpiece soaring into the sky. Pilgrims flocked here for spiritual solace, and the cathedral became a symbol of medieval splendour.

The medieval market town grew organically around the cathedral, turning St Albans into a bustling centre of commerce. Narrow streets wind through the city like a labyrinth, each one telling a story of traders haggling, bards singing, and knights clinking their armour. It's a living medieval fair every day.

Zoom in on the 19th century, where the industrial revolution meets medieval charm. The arrival of the railway transformed St Albans, connecting it to the hustle and bustle of London. Victorian architecture blended seamlessly with the medieval structures, creating a cityscape that's both timeless and dynamic.

And oh, the Clock Tower! Standing tall since the 15th century, it's not just a timepiece; it's a storyteller. Every chime echoes through the streets, recounting the passage of time and the city's rich history. It's like having a conversation with the past every hour.

In the heart of St Albans today, you'll find echoes of its medieval and Roman past harmoniously coexisting. The Maltings Arts Theatre, once a hub for medieval trade, now hosts performances that bridge the gap between history and modernity. The city has become a living canvas, where the strokes of medieval and Roman influences paint a vibrant picture for all to admire.

So, whether you're wandering through the ruins of Verulamium Park or exploring the medieval maze of St Albans' streets, you're stepping into a living history book where the chapters of Roman and medieval eras unfold with each footfall. It's a journey through time, and St Albans is your captivating guide.

St Albans Roman Town Tour - Roman Theatre, Hypocaust, Roman Town Wall and Verulamium Museum.

St Albans in Hertfordshire is a must see destination for visitors interested in Roman Britain. Verulamium as the city was called in Roman times, boasts the only remaining Roman theatre in Roman Britain, an outstanding collection of mosaics and finds on display in the museum, well-preserved sections of the city walls and a hypocaust in situ under a mosaic floor. Today the remains of Verulamium are mostly located in a beautiful public park. My film takes you on a full tour around the theatre, the city walls, hypocaust and the museum.

Reasons to visit St Albans:

• Only Roman Theatre in Roman Britain.
• Well preserved Roman city walls.
• Award winning Roman Verulamium Museum.
• Best Roman wall paintings to have survived in Britain
• Outstanding collection of over 40 Roman mosaic floors.
• Hundreds of Roman artefacts.
• Verulamium Venus figure.
• In situ hypocaust beneath a fine mosaic floor.
• Third largest city in Roman Britain.

The sites of Roman St Albans are located in and around the tranquil Verulamium park, so it is only a short walk to all of the sites shown in the film. The film features:
1:21:15 St Albans’ Roman Theatre
4:24:21 Roman Arch Remains
5:11:01 Shops and Roman Town House
5:47:22 Hypocaust and mosaic floor
7:39 St Alban’s Roman Town Wall
11:41:09 Verulamium Museum

The History bit –
The Romans established the settlement of St Albans shortly after the invasion in AD43, close to the capital of the Catuvellauni tribe. The town was completely destroyed during the revolt led by Boudicca in AD 60-1. Verulamium was rebuilt between AD 70 – 100. It became the third largest town in Roman Britain. The town included a Forum with a basilica, public baths, temples, many prosperous private townhouses and a theatre. Verulamium was an important town in Roman Britain for four hundred years until the end of the Roman occupation. It was granted municipium status, a self-governing community and it’s citizens were granted latin rights. The city wall was built between 265 and 270 AD of mortared flint rubble with layers of brick bonding. It was faced with dressed flints, though little of the facing remains. St Albans is the location of the first British matyr after whom it was named.

Information –
St Albans is 20 miles north of London. If you visit by car you can park next to the museum. There are toilet facilities in the car park. All places shown in my film are a short walking distance from the car park. The car park is located where part of the Roman Forum once stood. During your visit grab some lunch at the Inn on the Park which I can recommend.

St Albans Hertfordshire England Walking tour | 4K

Today we are in St Albans, one of the most fascinating cities in the UK with a couple of thousands years of history. It is located in Hertfordshire, about 22 miles north-west of central London. It is pretty easy to get there by train from London Euston station.
Come with me for a walk through the mediaeval heart of the city just steps away from the ancient Roman town of Verulamium, once the second-largest town in Roman Britain. Here are well preserved parts of the walls, mosaics and Roman theatre. Saint Alban, patron of the city, was a Roman soldier, who lived in the 3th century, who was beheaded because dared to help a Christian priest.
Shortly after Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1077 began construction of the magnificent St Albans Abbey, which was destroyed in 1539 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, however, only the church, St Albans Cathedral since 1877, and abbey gateway, built in 1365, remaining intact.

St Albans was the site of two battles during the Wars of the Roses: The first one took place in 1455, when Richard, Duke of York, father of the future king Richard III, defeated King Henry VI of the House of Lancaster. In 1461 the Second battle was fought, however, this time the Lancastrian army won over the House of York, resulting in the release of King Henry VI.

St Albans is a site of one of the world's oldest schools, founded in the middle of the 10th century, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is said to be the one of England's oldest pub, set up in the 8th century and rebuild in 1599, the last remaining mediaeval belltower in England, built in the 15th century, and many many well preserved mediaeval houses on the French Row.

02:14 St Peter's Church was Anglo-Saxon wooden constraction, was built on this site around AD 948. The new church was rebuilt during the 13th century, with subsequent changes being done in order to fix some structural instability.

05:29 Old Town Hall - St Albans Museum + Gallery - Great museum to explore. We found the old jail cells and courtroom interesting. . We enjoyed reading about the history of St Albans too. There was an exhibition featuring the history of local Jewish people, which was very informative.

13:12 Vintry Garden is a walled garden lying behind of St Albans Cathedral. It was a part of Abbey's property and back in the 14th Century the monks cultivated this land.

20:54 St Albans School is one of the oldest school in England. The school was founded within St Albans Abbey by Abbot Wulsin in 948 and was the first school open to the wider public. By the 12th century, the School had built a great reputation attracting numerous scholars such as Geoffrey de Gorham (died in 1146) and Al. Neckam (1157–1217). Stephen Hawking (1942–2018), theoretical physicist, educated at St Albans School.

St Albans Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 20 miles north, and slightly west, of central London, is the city of St Albans.

St Albans is situated adjacent to the ancient Roman settlement of Verulamium. At its peak, Verulamium was the second biggest town in Roman Britain, behind Londinium. Sometime around the 3rd or 4th century AD, a Roman soldier named Alban was put to death for sheltering a Christian priest. Alban was later canonised as Britain's first Christian martyr, and after the Roman withdrawal from Britain, the Saxon settlement that followed was named after him.

In 1077 work began on the construction of St Albans Abbey (which would later become St Albans Cathedral). Roman bricks from the ruins of Verulamium were used. With various additions over the centuries, the building that stands today is a mix of Norman, Gothic and 19th century architecture. In 1365 the Abbey Gateway was built (appearing at the start of the walk).

In 1455 the First Battle of St Albans occurred, which is considered to have been the beginning of the Wars of the Roses. Richard, Duke of York (father of Richard III) defeated the army of Henry VI of the House of Lancaster. In 1461 the Second Battle of St Albans took place. This time the House of York were defeated by the Lancastrian army who subsequently secured the release of Henry VI, who had been held captive following the Battle of Northampton seven months earlier.

In 1539 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, nearly all the buildings of St Albans Abbey were destroyed, with only the abbey church and gateway remaining intact. From this point on, the Abbey Gateway was used as town gaol (or jail in modern terms) up until 1868. In 1877 the abbey church was elevated to cathedral status, and with it, St Albans was granted city status.

In 1858 St Albans Abbey Station opened. This was the city's first railway connection, which was later followed by St Albans City Station in 1868. The latter provides a direct link into London St Pancras, which has made St Albans a popular commuter base for those working in the capital.

Le Puy Camino: Saint-Alban to Saint-Côme d'Olt | Part 2 (Via Podiensis)

Welcome to part 2 of our 1500 km Camino along the Via Podiensis — from Le Puy-en-Velay, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In this episode we explore the Aubrac Plateau and end in the Lot River Valley.

We started the Via Podiensis (Le Puy Camino or Chemin du Puy) on August 7, 2023, spending 28 days walking in France, arriving at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on September 3rd. From there, we continued on the Camino Frances, arriving in Santiago on September 29th.

This is our first time walking the Via Podiensis and our second time on the Camino Frances. We have hiked several other Camino routes in Spain including the Camino Primitivo (May 2023), Camino de Invierno (March 2023), the Camino del Norte (July 2019), and the Camino Frances (September 2017). We packed ultralight bags for all of our journeys.

Walking St Albans, England - Cathedral, City Centre & Train Station

A first-person perspective walk tour of St Albans City Centre in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The tour starts outside St Albans Cathedral, then to the high street filled with shops, bars and restaurants, and then onto St Albans City train station - which has a journey time of 20 minutes into Central London.

St Albans is a city in Hertfordshire, England and the major urban area in the City and District of St Albans. It lies east of Hemel Hempstead and west of Hatfield, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of central London, 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Welwyn Garden City and 11 miles (18 km) south-southeast of Luton. St Albans was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north, and it became the Roman city of Verulamium. It is a historic market town and is now a dormitory town within the London commuter belt and the Greater London Built-up Area. The city has a population of 58,000. - from Wikipedia
