St. Thomas Mount is a small hillock located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, near Guindy. The mount is known locally as Peria Malai (Big Mount—in Tamil language) or Parangi Malai. Legend maintains that St. Thomas, one of the Twelve apostles of Christ, traveled to India after the crucifixion of Jesus, bringing the gospel to the people of India. St. Thomas Mount is the legendary place where Thomas had been martyred, shot by his assailants with a bow and arrow. He is thought to have clutched a stone cross, bleeding on it during his death. That cross has been called the bleeding cross, as miracles of its bleeding have been reported.The Portuguese built the shrine of Mother Mary, a small relic-filled Church, in 1523 at the summit of the 300 foot high St. Thomas Mount. The bleeding cross has been built into the altar wall. An oil painting of the Madonna, reputed to have been painted by the apostle Luke and brought to India by Thomas, is hung in the shrine. The Little Mount on St. Thomas Mount is reputed to have been the hermitage of St. Thomas, a humble cave in the hillside. Legend states that Thomas had been in the cave when assailed, escaping to the hill where he met his death. Acknowledging the importance of the holy site to the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II visited the pilgrimage site on February 5, 1986, during his visit to India.According to legend, St. Thomas had been one of the first Christians to reach India and to preach Christianity.[1] He was believed to have reached South India in 52 C.E., spending the last years of his life in a cave on the hill. Tradition states that Thomas had been martyred in 72 C.E., shot by a bow and arrow. Over the centuries, the legend has been passed on, leading to the hill taking the name St. Thomas Mount.

Important things to see on St.Thomas Mount in Chennai. I visited St.Thomas Mount with Lokesh and Joel(Jiji) an awesome cameraman. St.Thomas mount is the place where St.Thomas after he was martyred was buried. He was martyred here in 72 AD 3 July and remains are interred in Mylapore. It is a long video and we spent considerable time on top of the mount. Getting up the mount in a car and down is also fun.

This is one of the earliest memorials in Chennai is the peaceful little Portuguese chapel on top of the hill (a flight of 132 steps leads to the summit) and built at the site where St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, was martyred in 72 A.D. and thereafter the hill has been famously known as the St. Thomas Mount. We have been in Chennai for the past three years, and we are bored with beaches and other famous places in Chennai, so we started looking for something that is not so popular in Chennai. And guess what we discovered? It’s beautiful hills with a stunning top view and a church on top of it. We know it’s not surprising for people native to Chennai but definitely for those who recently shifted to Chennai and still enjoying the joyful beaches of Chennai. The Tamil name of this hill is Parangmalai which is close to the Chennai airport and Guindy and near IIT Madras Campus. This would be a weekend treat for students of IIT Madras, especially those who joined the institute in the near past. Since the 17th century, the locality of these hills has been populated mainly by Anglo-Indians; hence the hills were renamed Saint Thomas Mount and are commonly known by this name even now. In the past, Tamil sage, Bhringi stayed there for a while to complete his worship of lord Shiva. During his time, he travelled to a few other places in Chennai too. The place where he once left his Kindi is now known as Guindy. Kindi is a Tamil word which translates to a कमंडल in Hindi. The road leading to this hill is equally beautiful and mesmerising. On the way to the hills, you will find an Army Campus known as Officers Training Academy, where you would urge to stop for a while and appreciate the beauty of it. The hill area is populated by 4,75,995 people with 1,21,017 houses, according to the 2011 census report.

San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic (Latin Rite) minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai (Madras), India. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. In 1893, it was rebuilt as a church with the status of a cathedral by the British. The British version still stands today. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century. This church is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain.
