Moscow. Povarskaya str. Mansions of russian aristocrats. [Moscow Travel Guide]

Hello, everyone! Want to know more about Moscow? Subscribe to our channel.

Spring is in the air, so let s speak about something romantic! For example, about the first bal of Natasha Rostova.

What house was the prototype of Rostovs estate in War and peace?
Did the 200 year old elm, the favorite of Ivan Bunin, remain?

Where did the people who worked in the tzar kitchen live?
What other sculpture of Vera Muhina after Worker and kolhoz woman is popular in Moscow?

Where did Pushkin first read his poem Poltava?
You will know all this when you see our new video!

Today our Moscow travel guide invites you to walk along the most aristocratic street in Moscow - Povarskaya. It connects New Arbat and Sadovoye ring.

In fact Povarskaya means Cook s street. Its because those, who were in service in the Tzar kitchen lived here In 16th -17th century. And also Ivan the Great s guardsmen, because this street was a way to Novgorod.

We ll start our excursion from the legendary restaurant Praga. It was opened in 1872 and the address was Povarskaya, 1. After the October revolution this luxury restaurant turned into a canteen! Mayakovskiy liked to eat here.

This is a church of Simeon Stolpnik. It was built in 17th century. Look at its beautiful 5 domes in the traditional Moscow style.

Here count Sheremetiev married a serf actress Praskovia Zhemchugova. Gogol used to come here during the last years of his life.

Let s continue our walk and go up the street to the Sadovoe ring. The Golden age of the estates on Povarskaya starts from the 18th century, from the Peter times.

The Tzar kitchen moves to the new capital St Petersburg. And the street begins to be a home of russian aristocrats: Gagarin, Golitsin, Dolgorukiy, Volkonsky.

Today most of the estates host different foreign embassies, for example Norway or Cyprus. In Bludov s estate on Povarskaya, 15 there is a Supreme court of Russia now. Look, here is the sculpture of Femida, without an eye patch for some reason.

Not far from the Borisoglebsky street was a court of Peter s the first sister Natalia.

Unfortunately not all estates survived till nowadays. Some of them burned out, some were demolished.

For example between 2 streets Borisoglebskiy and Big Rshevskiy instead of 2 luxury estates of the 18th century the soviets made a park of Ivan Bunin. 200year old elm the favorite Bunins tree unfortunately has not survived.

Lets continue our excursion. Look at the house number 25, the Gagarin estate. Prince Gagarin, the director of the Emperors theatre ordered to build the main house in the empire style.

In the 1920s the cavalry school was in this building, and in the 1937 it became the Literature institute. In the yard you can find another famous sculpture of Vera Muhina The thunderbird of Revolution.

And here is the Orlov s house. In the 19th century it belonged to the count Sheremetiev. In one of its splendid halls Pushkin read his poem Poltava for the 1st time.

The only wooden house that remained on Povarskaya, is the house with mesonine of the princess Volkonskaya.

House number 50 - the famous Writers house was the first writers cub in Moscow.

And at last we came up to the house № 52. This very estate with 6 columns was the home of Tolstov s Natasha Rostova, the hero of his famousWar and peace.

This yellow estate is made in russian classicism style. There is a small church near the main house. In 1920 the Palace of arts was opened here. Boris Pasternak, Alexey Tolstoy, Sergei Esenin and Marina Zvetaeva performed here.

In the yard you cfn see the monument to Lev Tolstoy made by Vasnetcov.
Today several writing organizations and restaurants are located here.

Povarskaya led us to the Sadoviy ring. Here, on Kudrinskaya square Moscow travel guide and me, Vera will say bye bye to you.

Stay on our channel, subscribe and enjoy the wonderful views of Moscow, its streets, squares, buildings. Suggest the places, that you would like to see, Bye!

The Garden Ring, also known as the B Ring (Russian: Садо́вое кольцо́, кольцо́ Б; transliteration: Sadovoye Koltso), is a circular ring road avenue around central Moscow, its course corresponding to what used to be the city ramparts surrounding Zemlyanoy Gorod in the 17th century.

The Ring consists of seventeen individually named streets[1] and fifteen squares. It has a circumference of 16 kilometers (9.9 mi).[2] At its narrowest point, Krymsky Bridge, the Ring has six lanes. After finishing reconstruction, all sections of the Ring will not have more than 10 lanes. In 2018, more than 50 % of sections of the Garden Ring are reconstructed, including Zubovskaya square, which was the widest section, there were about 18 lanes before. The Ring emerged in the 1820s, replacing fortifications, in the form of ramparts, that were no longer of military value.

Route
4k walk, a documentary slow tv travel channel features a series of 4k video walks in Moscow City. This walk is along Garden ring (Sadovaya - Kudrinskaya - Novinsky Boulevard) . Watch Moscow City 4k !!!

The Ring consists of seventeen individually named streets and fifteen squares. It has a circumference of sixteen kilometres. At its narrowest point, Krymsky Bridge, the Ring has six lanes. After finishing the reconstruction, all sections of the Ring will have not more than 10 lanes. In 2018, more than 50 % of sections of the Garden Ring are reconstructed, including Zubovskaya square, which was the widest section, there were about 18 lanes before. The Ring emerged in the 1820s, replacing fortifications, in the form of ramparts, that were no longer of military value.
Garden Ring is a direct descendant of the Skorodom (Скородом, literally Quick Building) and Earth Rampart (Земляной Вал, Zemlyanoy Val) fortifications, erected in the reign of Feodor I of Russia after a disastrous raid by Ğazı II Giray (1591). Although Boris Godunov, de facto regent of Russia, prevented Crimean Tatars from taking the city north of Moskva River, he anticipated future raids and arranged construction of another defence ring.
When the Time of troubles ended, instead of rebuilding Skorodom, Mikhail Romanov government replaced it with a new, taller rampart known as Zemlyanoy Val (Земляной Вал, Earth Rampart), completed in 1630-1638. Its name survives in present-day Zemlyanoy Val Street (former Chkalov Street) in the south-eastern segment of Garden Ring.

1935 Joseph Stalin's master plan of Moscow provided for expansion of Garden Ring to at least 30-40 meter width, and demolition of buildings set at the ends of Garden Ring boulevards to create wide open squares. Grand Stalinist buildings, envisioned on all the ring, were initially planned only for major squares like Kursky Rail Terminal Square and Triumphalnaya Square. However, one end-of-boulevard block survives, precisely on Triumphalnaya Square, atop the six-lane tunnel. The same plan required removal of tram tracks in line with Moscow Metro construction. In fact, removal of tram tracks proceeded well in advance of subway construction; by 1938, tram remained only in southern and south-eastern segments of the Ring (this segment was closed in 1961).
Stalinist construction proceeded after World War II, notably the three skyscrapers (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Kudrinskaya Square and Red Gates Square buildings of 1947-1954). However, no part of the Ring was completely rebuilt in Stalinist style (or any other style). Any street of the Ring is a mixture of different style and sizes, from single-story 1820s mansions to recently built shopping malls and the 162-meter Swissotel in Red Hills (2005).
From the 1990s till 2010, the city government has proposed conversion of the Garden Ring to a one-way street, completely separated from radial street traffic. The public and professionals equally reject the idea of a one-way, 18-lane street.
Since 2010, with the arrival of the new city government, these plans were canceled. In 2016 a new reconstruction began. Trolleybus traffic was eliminated, they were replaced by diesel buses. It is planned to narrow down all section of the Ring to not more than 10 lanes, to expand the sidewalks and to take off all the wires.

Moscow Russia - City Trip

Short movie from our trip to Moscow.

Moscow is situated on the banks of the Moskva River, which flows for just over 500 km through the East European Plain in central Russia. 49 bridges span the river and its canals within the city's limits. Elevation of Moscow in VVC, where situated head Moscow weather station, is 156 m (512 ft). The highest point is Teplostanskaya highland at 255 m (837 ft). The width of Moscow city (not limiting MKAD) from west to east is 39.7 km (24.7 mi), and the length from north to south is 51.7 km (32.1 mi).

Moscow's road system is centered roughly around the Kremlin at the heart of the city. From there, roads generally radiate outwards to intersect with a sequence of circular roads (rings).

The first and innermost major ring, Bulvarnoye Koltso (Boulevard Ring), was built at the former location of the sixteenth century city wall around that used to be called Bely Gorod (White Town). The Bulvarnoye Koltso is technically not a ring; it does not form a complete circle, but instead a horseshoe-like arc that goes from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to the Yauza River. In addition, the Boulevard Ring changes street names numerous times throughout its journey across the city.

The second primary ring, located outside the bell end Boulevard Ring, is the Sadovoye Koltso (Garden Ring). Like the Boulevard Ring, the Garden Ring follows the path of a sixteenth century wall that used to encompass part of the city. The third ring, the Third Transport Ring, was completed in 2003 as a high-speed freeway.

The Fourth Transport Ring, another freeway, is under construction to further reduce traffic congestion. The outermost ring within Moscow is the Moscow Automobile Ring Road (often called the MKAD from the Russian Московская Кольцевая Автомобильная Дорога), which forms the approximate boundary of the city.

Moscow serves as the reference point for the timezone used in most of western Russia, including Saint Petersburg. During winter the areas operate in what is referred to as Moscow Standard Time (MSK, МСК) which is 3 hours ahead of UTC, or UTC+3. During the summer, Moscow Time shifts forward an additional hour ahead of Moscow Standard Time to become Moscow Summer Time (MSD), making it UTC+4.

Walking Moscow streets. Kutuzovsky ave from Bagration monument to Novoarbatsky bridge. Russia. 4K

Kutuzovsky Avenue is the main radial avenue in Moscow, Russia, named after Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov, the commander of the Russian field army during the French invasion of Russia. The avenue continues its way westward along Vozdvizhenka and Novy Arbat streets from the Novoarbatsky bridge across the Moskva River to the intersection with Rublevskoe highway; then the route changes its name to Mozhaisk highway.

The modern Kutuzovsky Prospect was founded in 1957-1963. the old Mozhaisky tract (house No. 19–45), rebuilt in the grandiose Stalinist style in the late 1930s on the site of the former Dorogomilovsky cemetery, and the low-rise blocks of Kutuzovskaya Sloboda street. and Novodorogomilovskaya Street, demolished in the 1950s. Initially, Kutuzovsky Prospekt stretched eastward to the Garden Ring, but in 1963, at the beginning of the reconstruction of Novy Arbat, a section was allocated between the Garden Ring and Novoarbatsky Bridge. to New Arbat (then known as Kalinin Avenue).
The eastern part of the avenue (within the Dorogomilovsky district), built up in 1938-1963, has traditionally been an expensive, high-quality residential area and hosted the social elite, including the family of Leonid Brezhnev. The area west of Poklonnaya Gora is less affluent, with standardized housing stock from the 1950s – 1980s; one notable exception is luxury built in the 2000s.

Kutuzovsky Prospect is an emergency route. On Kutuzovsky Prospekt, road accidents occur with frightening regularity, more than 100 people have been victims of road accidents over several years. The most dangerous place on Kutuzovsky Prospekt is the section between the 8th and 10th kilometers. The dangerous section begins after the Arc de Triomphe and ends before the turn to Minskaya.

Instead of rebuilding the useless rampart, the city levelled it; census records set demolition date as 1818-1826.The new free land was developed according to local social status: upper-class western segment of the Ring acquired central boulevards, flanged by side streets. Present-day streets in this segments are still called Boulevards (Zubovsky Boulevard, etc.). Elsewhere, Garden Ring was set as a 10-20 sazhen (22–43 meters) wide street; unused side territories were allocated to existing homeowners on condition that they plant and maintain gardens at their own expense. These streets usually have a name beginning with Sadovaya–, e.g. Sadovo–Triumphalnaya Street. By 1850, all buildings in this street were completely hidden from view by foliage; the street, indeed, was running through a garden. In south-eastern segment (Tagansky District), the Ring was not as wide, thus Zemlyanoy Val name persisted. Largest square - actually, a combination of two market squares - was created at Red Gates in the north-eastern segment.
In the 1830s-1862, Novinsky Boulevard has become a popular amusement park with cheap theaters and carousels. In 1841, local entrepreneurs set up a short railroad with a real Mercury tank engine - a pleasure ride for the party crowds.
