National Park Los Haitises in the Dominican Republic. From your Hotel in Punta Cana or just go there
One of our Tourist attractions here in the Dominican Republic, is the National Park Los Haitises. It’s a nature reserve that easily throws you back a couple of 100 years, when Pirates where still cruising the Caribbean. The Rocks look like they where just thrown into the Bay so boats can hide here before they bring their treasure in one of the Caves. From Bavaro - Punta Cana the the driving time is 2 1/2 half hours, unless you are going slow to enjoy the views already. Tours that are organized from your Hotel or Rep, are mostly a combination where the Parque Nacional Los Haitises is just one part.
If you are traveling by your self, you can visit coming or going to Samana. As well it is a good idea to spend a night or two in the Altos de Caño. The Hotel with the 12 freshwater pools.
The boat ride, starting from the “Sabana Del Mar” side, take you through the Mangroves and into the Bay of San Lorenzo. If you are lucky you can see Dolphins and/ or Manatees. For sure you will see a lot of Birds and it’s not boring at all. All tours stop at one of the old Taino Caves, that where use by the native Tainos for shelter and as Holy Places for their rituals.
Boat Ride and nature are SPECTACULAR and I would just do it over and over again.
All I can say is Travel, Travel, Travel and see the World.

I live in the Dominican Republic since 2001 and I love the Island Life. The Dominican Republic is extremely beautiful and you can still experience adventures. The Locals are very friendly and always have a smile for you.
Punta Cana - Samana in one day is one of my favorite excursions.
We are leaving Bavaro - Punta Cana early in the morning to reach Sabana de la Mar on time for the first Ferry.
(Ferry are going at 9 am 11 am 3pm and 5 pm from Sabana de la Mar to Santa Barbara de Samana. From Samana to Sabana at 7 AM at 9 AM at 11 Am and 3PM NO GARANTIE on this information)
It’s 250 RDS ( Dominican Peso) one way.
The Ferry is also a great way for Backpackers and Travelers to come from one site to the other. ( Check out the Hotel Caño Hondo on the Sabana de la Mar site, you can find it on google, Lonely Planet and also Trip Advisor.
The duration of the Ferry Crossing is apron. 70 Min. Depending of course on weather conditions. It’s a great Adventure and you are diving right into the real, authentic Dominican Republic.
We decided to visit the most beautiful beach, Playa El Valle in Samana because it’s only a 20 -30 drive from the Ferry, so there is more time to explore.
Blue seas, and high waves, a little Jungle too. Having lunch at a local Beach Hut restaurant. Felt like a visit to paradise and we had the 1 million Dollar view! A really great place, not to miss if you are in the Dominican!
Las Galeras and Playa Rincon are at least double the distance.
But you can always make your own Plan!
We paid 1000 RDS for the Moto Carro ( Rikscha) but I have also payed more than this on other trips. It’s a question of your Bargain Skills and how many Moto Carro are available :-) The same for the food, we ask around for prices and dishes before we decided on La Ballena. Do the Same.
Samana is one of the most beautiful places for me, here on the Island of Hispaniola.
If you are an experienced traveler this excursion can be done alone, but if you do not feel confident to do it by yourself, check out other Samana excursion online. Most include Cayo Levantado. The little Island also know as Bacardi Island.
Arriving to Samana you can find people who sell it to you right away :-)

Samaná is a unique peninsula in the North-East of the Dominican Republic. It's hard to explain but it has a busy and laid back vibe at the same time. Throughout the day you can see countless loud motorbikes racing through the streets of the peninsula's capital Santa Bárbara de Samaná, but it also has more laid back places within a few minutes of walking. Just like Santo Domingo this place has a history of European colonisation but it's not as strikingly visible as in Santo Domingo. Popular things to do in Santa Barbera are a walking tour over the bridge Puentes de Samana which connects 2 tiny islands to the main land at the beach Playa Cayacoa, a tour to the tropical island Cayo Levantado, whale watching and a boat excursion to the lime stone rocks, mangroves and caves of Los Haitises. Other things to see on the peninsula are the beaches of Las Galeras, the more windy surf and kindsurfing beaches of Las Terrenas and the El Limón forest with it's river and waterfalls, which I'll cover up in upcoming videos. A few basic accomodations start at 20 Euro but most of them are a bit more expensive. You can find a few all-inclusive luxury resorts but not as many as in the south-west of the Dominican Republic. Most of the time renting an apartment on Airbnb is your best way to go.
From Santo Domingo I took a bus with Caribe Tours. It is a very convenient company with good buses and good security at the bus stations. The price to Samana was 500 Pesos, about 8,30 Euro and the trip took about 2,5 hours. There's also a ferry from Sabana de la Mar to Samana but even though it's a shorter trip from the starting points Punta Cana or Bavaro, the bus trip and the process at the ferry will take more time than if you go to Samaná via Santo Domingo.
Santa Bárbara de Samaná is a relatively safe area. The people are very energetic but not pushy or intimidating. I noticed more smiling people and more people speaking English (and French) and I felt much more comfortable compared to La Romana and Santo Domingo, even after dark. For the first time in the Dominican Republic I had hours long pleasant conversations with shop and restaurant owners, owners of accomodations and tour guides telling me their 'past life' stories that could make a new pirates of the caribbean movie. And the best part is that non of them was just hunting for a single dollar! It was legit mutual interest in our different lifes. It seems like the locals seperate working and socializing on this peninsula in a good way. At night the waterfrond becomes more busy as people come back from different excursions and tours. I think Samaná is a must see and one of the best, if not the best place to visit in the Domimican Republic during your vacation or travel. I'm not sure of how busy it can get during high season but I think the vibe will not be much different!
