The Way of Saint James! Walk to Santiago! Day 1 - from Porto to Vairão
First day of the Walk to Santiago (The Way of Saint James), doing the Portuguese Central Way (Caminho Português Central - Camino Portugués).
We started early bells on a Sunday in Porto, when the city was still half asleep. Besides going through beautiful Porto, we passed by São Mamede de Infesta, Leça do Balio and Maia until we reached Vairão (county of Vila do Conde). We rested in Vairão Monastery, a beautiful place.

Casa de Sao Mamede Hotel sells fast on our site. The Casa de São Mamede is a small hotel sited in a renovated 17th century building. The unit is centrally located in Lisbon and has the Rato Metro Station at a 4-minute walking distance.
The hotel's charming and comfortable rooms include a satellite TV, private bathroom with free toiletries, air conditioning, free WiFi, desk and a wardrobe.
A breakfast buffet is offered each morning in the hotel and served in the breakfast area or in the rooms, upon request. There are several local restaurants under 985 feet from the hotel. The local cuisine is especially famed for its various fish dishes.
The Chiado historical area is a 5-minute drive while the equally well-known Rossio is a 6-minute drive away. The Lisbon city centre is a 10-minute walk and features plenty of shops, boutiques and cafés for guests to choose from. It is a 5-minute drive from Bairro Alto, Lisbon’s foremost nighttime hotspot. The Bocage Museum is a 4-minute walk.
The Rato Metro Station connects with the Lisbon Airport and the city centre. The Lisbon International Airport is a 15-minute drive away from the Casa de São Mamede Hotel. There is a bus station just 89 feet from the hotel.

La découverte de ces grottes (Grottes de la Monnaie en français) est tout de même assez récente puisqu'elle a eu lieu en 1971.
Deux chasseurs les ont découvertes lorsque le renard qu'ils pourchassaient s'est réfugié dans un trou déjà existant. Ils y sont entrés par curiosité et ont ainsi découvert une première caverne comprenant plusieurs formations calcaires.
Ils ont passé plusieurs mois a explorer les lieux afin de découvrir d'autres galeries et cavernes.
Par la suite, des scientifiques ont pris le relais et ces grottes ont été aménagées en attraction touristique en prenant bien soin de préserver leurs caractéristiques.
Ce n'est qu'en 1974 que celles-ci ont été ouvertes au public.
Aujourd'hui, ces grottes sont composées de 12 galeries naturelles qui comprennent de magnifiques formations calcaires.
La partie que l'on peut visiter s'étend sur une longueur de 350 mètres et elle se situe à une profondeur de 45 mètres. La température intérieure se maintient continuellement aux alentours de 18 ºC.
La visite se fait en groupe et un guide nous accompagne pour parcourir les diverses galeries naturelles.
Notre groupe était composé de visiteurs de différentes nationalités. Notre guide était polyglotte. Donc, elle s'entretenait avec chacun des visiteurs dans leur propre langue pour donner des informations sur les différentes formations.
Lors de notre visite, nous découvrons diverses galeries baptisées selon l'apparence qu'elles ont. Par exemple: lac du bonheur, chapelle imparfaite, gâteau de fiançailles, fontaine des larmes, etc.
A la fin de notre visite, nous sommes invités à une dégustation de leurs produits régionaux qui s'avèrent être une petite pâtisserie ainsi qu'une boisson alcoolisée qui porte le nom de Abafadinho da Moeda.
Nous nous sommes d'ailleurs procuré une de ces bouteilles à la fin de cette dégustation.
On retrouve également sur place un centre d'interprétation, une boutique, une cafétéria ainsi qu'une aire de pique-nique.
La gentillesse et la patience de notre guide nous ont également fait apprécié la visite de ces grottes. Elle nous donnait suffisamment de temps pour admirer les différentes formations calcaires.

I have explored a few along the coast, and I will show you everything in this vlog. Unfortunately, the adventures that happened gave us a bit of a headache. The flat tire stole us from the time that was already short, but everything is ok when it ends up well. Portugal: Von Porto nach Matosinhos
Diesen Ausflug in Portos kleine Nachbarstadt haben wir am 20. Januar gemacht. Dafür, dass es um diese Jahreszeit im Norden Portugals kalt und regnerisch sein soll, können wir uns absolut nicht beklagen. Matosinhos ist vor allem wegen seiner guten Fischrestaurants bekannt. Auf unserem kurzen Tagesausflug hatten wir leider nicht genug Zeit das ausführlicher zu testen. Zufällig führte uns der Weg jedoch in ein kleines, unscheinbares Lokal, das sich als Volltreffer erwies. Im Tortas de Polvo haben wir sehr gut gegessen. Auf dem Rückweg gefielen uns vor allem die vielen kleinen Badestrände, die sich mit Felsen abwechselnd, von Matosinhos bis zur Douro Mündung in Porto, aneinanderreihen.
