Awesome Small Towns in Indiana

Whoops! I forgot to rotate a picture...

My brother, my dad, and I went on a trip to Knightstown, IN on June 2, 2012, and visited several other cool small towns on the way there and back home. These towns include New Castle, Rushville, Connersville, Greenfield, Straughn, Dunreith, Greenfield, and a few others I'm not sure what they were. XD

New Castle was a surprisingly amazing town. It had a Second Empire 1866 courthouse designed by Isaac Hodgson (who designed the original courthouse in Indianapolis that's now gone :( and several other Indiana courthouses that still remain). We also came across a semaphore signal by the train station. One of our favorite discoveries was the Art Moderne-style armory. It was built in 1938, and has been empty for a couple years. THEY'D BETTER KEEP THAT BUILDING UP OR ELSE!!!!

While in Knightstown, we visited the gym where the movie Hoosiers took place. It's still an active gym and it has a few movie props inside. We also got to see the amazing Second Empire Knightstown Academy, and I ended up buying a large can of Empire State Motor Oil for just under $20.

Grandview, Indiana

FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
The Ohio River road trip continues further into Spencer County, on Indiana 66. We come to Grandview, Indiana, where you can find a spectacular, wide open view of the Ohio river. While there are no historic buildings left, it has a surprising connection to Walt Disney, and some of the most classic Walt Disney films ever made!

Missouri Towns: Rich Hill, Montrose, & Rushville

3 Missouri towns!

RICH HILL

“Rich Hill is a city in Bates County, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area within the United States. The population was 1,396 at the 2010 census.

Rich Hill was platted in 1880. The city was named in 1871 by C.W. Ratekin and used the slogan The Town That Coal Built. The town experienced a rapid population expansion during the late 1800s, until mining efforts began to decline and eventually ended in 1906. The mining effort was renewed by Peabody Energy in the 1950s.

The Prairie View Stock Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

The city featured heavily in Rich Hill, a 2014 documentary about three teenage boys struggling with family, poverty, and looming adulthood. The film won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.”

*Here’s a link to the trailer for the documentary:

East Hill Cemetery, Rushville, Indiana

info@HistoryInYourOwnBackyard.com
812-623-5727

The East Hill Cemetery Company was founded in June 1859 to purchase land for the town of Rushville the county at large for a new cemetery. Prior to that, there were two burial grounds in Rushville.

East Hill Cemetery is the location of several impressive monuments, some of which are actually made of metal and bolted together. One of the most impressive monuments was erected by the local Joel Wolfe Post of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the memories of their fallen comrades; but there are other equally impressive monuments, and several small family mausoleums are also to be found at East Hill Cemetery. Many of the county's founders are also buried in the older section, including Dr. John Arnold. East Hill is also the final resting place for famous covered bridge builders, Archibald and Emmett Kennedy, evangelist and song-writer Knowles Shaw, and presidential candidate Wendell Willkie.
