Siracusa, located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage. The city has a population of approximately 120,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city on the island.

The region surrounding Syracuse is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and stunning natural landscapes. It is also home to several nature reserves and protected areas, including the Vendicari Nature Reserve and the Cava Grande del Cassibile Nature Reserve.

Syracuse's location on the coast of Sicily has contributed to its cultural and economic significance throughout history. The city was founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century BC, and later became a major center of the Roman Empire. Today, it is a bustling port city and a popular tourist destination.

The climate in Syracuse is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Temperatures in the summer months typically average around 30°C, while winter temperatures average around 15°C. The warm climate and beautiful beaches make Syracuse an ideal destination for summer vacations.

Syracuse has a rich heritage, with a mix of Greek, Roman, and Baroque architecture. The city's historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to several important landmarks and buildings. One of the most impressive is the ancient Greek theater, which dates back to the 5th century BC and is still used for performances today. Another important landmark is the Fountain of Arethusa, a natural spring surrounded by myth and legend.

The style of homes in Syracuse reflects the city's long history, with a mix of Greek, Roman, and Baroque influences. Many of the homes are made of stone or brick, and feature ornate balconies and courtyards. Some of the oldest homes in the city date back to the 15th century.

Tourism is an important industry in Syracuse, and the city attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience its rich history, beautiful beaches, and delicious cuisine. The city is home to several museums, including the Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from the city's ancient past. The city's historic center is also filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering visitors a taste of traditional Sicilian culture and cuisine.

Speaking of food, Syracuse is known for its delicious seafood dishes, including fresh fish, calamari, and octopus. Other popular dishes include pasta alla norma, made with eggplant and tomato sauce, and arancini, fried rice balls stuffed with meat, cheese, or vegetables. The city is also known for its sweets, including cannoli and cassata, a rich cake made with ricotta cheese.

The people of Syracuse are known for their warm hospitality and love of their city. The locals are proud of their rich cultural heritage, and are happy to share their traditions and history with visitors. The city is home to several festivals and cultural events throughout the year, including the Feast of St. Lucy in December, and the Greek Theatre Festival in May.

The surrounding area of Syracuse is also worth exploring, with several charming towns and villages nearby. Noto, a Baroque town known for its stunning architecture, is just a short drive from Syracuse. The town of Modica, known for its delicious chocolate, is also within easy reach.

Places to see in ( Avola - Italy ) Cavagrande del Cassibile

Places to see in ( Avola - Italy ) Cavagrande del Cassibile

For those who love nature, breathtaking views and perhaps a bit 'of trekking, it is certainly recommended a visit to Cavagrande del Cassibile . It is a nature reserve , over 2700 hectares wide and that is centered around the suggestive canyon formed by the river Cassibile. This natural quarry is about 10 km long and surrounded by steep rock walls, high in some points up to 300 m. Cavagrande is located a few kilometers from the town of Avola , south of Syracuse and the main access point is the road that climbs towards ancient Avola, destroyed by the earthquake of 1693.

Even if you do not want to take long hikes in the wild you will be able to enjoy marvelous panoramic views of the province of Syracuse, to get to the sea or to look out over the steep walls of the quarry to observe the small lakes from above.and the sinuous lines of the Cassibile river. The nature reserve is rich in vegetation. In spring it is wonderfully dotted with colorful flowers including many spontaneous orchids. During the hot months, however, a bath in the lakes is a pleasant refreshment. The area also has several archaeological remains such as the suggestive Grotta dei Briganti, used in past centuries or the prehistoric necropolis of Cassibile, at the mouth of the quarry. There are many paths of varying degrees of difficulty to visit Cavagrande. For occasional visitors, however, we suggest you opt for the panoramic Scala cruci path that leads down from the viewpoint to the lakes.

There is no public transport linking Cavagrande with Avola or other Sicilian towns. It is therefore necessary to arrive on the spot with own means or to join an organized tour. The most evocative point for the visit of Cavagrande is the belvedere of ancient Avola, from which we also depart the path Scala cruci that allows you to reach the famous lakes of Avola and their small waterfalls.

To reach Cavagrande from the north (Syracuse) or from the south (Ragusa), take the Siracusa-Gela motorway (in operation until Rosolini) and exit at the Avola junction. Once there, take the SS115 in the direction of Avola. Before entering the town, a roundabout leads to the Avola ring road. Turn right at the roundabout (first exit) and continue until you come to a tunnel-underpass. Here turn right without entering the tunnel and start following the signs for Cavagrande del Cassibile. When you reach the traffic light, turn right again and merge onto the SP4. Follow the road for several kilometers climbing in a suggestive landscape made of panoramic hairpin bends and dry stone walls. Finally, another sign Cavagrande / Laghetti di Avola

Although continuously maintained, the trail has a fairly high slope and can be difficult for untrained people, especially in the summer heat. Evaluate the difficulties well before starting the descent. To access the path you need closed shoes (gymnastics, trekking, etc.). The path is about 1700 m long and allows you to reach the beautiful lakes of Avola , formed by the cool waters of the river Cassibile. It is possible to swim in the clear waters of the ponds and cool off in the splendid waterfalls.

( Avola - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Avola . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Avola - Italy

«High up, on top of the steeply sloping rock, one could see, illuminated by the sun, the bell towers, the domes of the churches, the white facades and dark roofs of a group of houses facing right on the edge of the precipice and almost threatening to throw yourself down.

Luigi Capuana thus describes Ispica in his work Profumo. The writer lived in the Iblean city where he began writing The Marquis of Roccaverdina. Right in the quarry, in the shadow of a cliff, surmounted by a castle of which today only ruins remain, was the ancient Ispica .

At 13.30 on 11 January 1693 the fate of the city changed, a terrible earthquake shook and destroyed it. Only a few quarters of the ancient city were rebuilt, the new town was built outside the quarry.
From destruction to beauty

The reconstruction of Ispica followed the late Baroque canons and houses admirable pearls : the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the church of San Bartolomeo and the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata. Among the many late Baroque beauties you can also see two notable examples of Art Nouveau architecture : Palazzo Bruno and Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte.

What to see and what to do in Ispica:
