In this video I walked from the neighborhood of Carnolès by the beaches all the way up to the medieval castle in the old village of Roquebrune.
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department Côte d'Azur France, between Monaco and Menton. The area became fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s leading to the construction of several notable buildings including Coco Chanel's La Pausa on Cap Martin. Le Corbusier built a cabanon, a minimalist architectural design. He drowned in the sea there on August 27, 1965 and was buried in the local cemetery. Despite its name, the Monte Carlo Country Club is located in Roquebrune and not in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It is the venue for the tennis Monte-Carlo Masters.
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin has several villages and towns: St. Roman, practically a suburb of Monaco (but not part of Monaco proper, as it does not lie within the borders of Monaco), the residential areas of Cabbé, Bon Voyage and Serret, Roquebrune with its perched village and château, the posh Cap Martin peninsula and the seaside resort of Carnolès, with its long pebble beach bordering Menton.
This video mostly focuses on the medieval village of Roquebrune and the breathtaking views on the Mediterranean sea.

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is located on the Riviera, between the Principality of Monaco and Menton. It is the penultimate town on the coast before Italy.
This municipality of the Côte d'Azur of 12,000 inhabitants is located where the Alps plunge abruptly into the sea. Extremely rugged, it ranges from 0 to 800 meters above sea level!
The perched village of Roquebrune, of medieval appearance, dominates the Mediterranean from 200 meters. It has the oldest keep in the country, dating from the 10th century, and the oldest olive tree in France!
At its feet, the peninsula of Cap Martin brings together magnificent properties, and above all offers a coastal path, the Le Corbusier promenade, offering superb views.
Cape Martin
Along with Cap d'Antibes and Cap Ferrat, Cap Martin is one of the three peninsulas of the Riviera, and it is the smallest.
Like the other two, Cap Martin is home to superb villas lost in lush vegetation.
They are not always visible to tourists, and not really within the financial means of the average Frenchman, even very well off!
The Le Corbusier promenade: coastal path of Cap Martin
Much more accessible, the coastal path, known as the Le Corbusier promenade, goes around Cap Martin, among exotic plants.It offers superb views over Menton and Liguria to the east, then over Monaco, the Tête de Chien, Mont Agel, then the perched village of Roquebrune.The start is located in a small car park (free!), avenue Sir Winston Churchill, opposite Menton.Of course, as in most perched villages, the ideal is to take the time to stroll through the timeless alleys, to get lost in the courtyards, stairs, under the porches, and to enjoy the places! (quieter out of season…)
Roquebrune is undeniably worth a visit for its medieval hillside village, 200 meters above the sea.
Given its mediocre accessibility by transport and the profusion of beautiful villages in the surrounding area (Eze, Gorbio, Sainte-Agnès, etc.), it remains relatively unknown.
Cap Martin offers a pretty coastal path, reminiscent of that of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, with a walk by the sea lined with lush exotic vegetation.
I fell in love with this very “exploded” town, as much for its pretty village as its seaside, far from the hustle and bustle of the Nice metropolis. I therefore highly recommend discovering it! ????

There are four major capes on the eastern end of the Côte d’Azur: Cap d’Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Cap d’Ail, and Cap Martin. All four of these capes feature excellent hiking and walking trails that are fairly easy for most people and quite popular with locals and tourists. They are all quite similar in some ways and a bit unique in others. It’s an easy drive from Vence to any of them and I like to hike them all on a regular basis.
Cap Martin lies about halfway between Menton and Monte-Carlo and just like the other three it features rugged rocks, gorgeous views, and magnificent landscapes. The hike begins at the Carnolès train station just west of Menton. It ends at the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin train station which is just east of Monte-Carlo. This provides many options on how you’d like to finish the hike once you’ve finished.
Cap Martin is probably the most epic and spectacular cape on the French Riviera. Cap Martin is situated in the Alpes-Maritimes in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, close to the Italian border.

About Cap Martin
In the 1st century the Via Julia Augusta, one of the most important roads of the Roman Empire, stretched from Italy to Marseilles. The road passed through Cap Martin on the way from Ventimiglia to La Turbie. The perched village of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, situated high on the hills overlooking the cape, dates back to 970. The cape became French in 1793, then moved to independent status under the protection of the King of Sardinia, and then once again became French in 1861.
In the late 1800s, during the French Belle Époque, luxurious villas with names like Villa Cyrnos (occupied by the wife of Napoleon III), Villa Cypris, Villa Zamir, and Villa Torre Clementina began to spring up all over the cape. The Grande Hôtel du Cap-Martin was built in 1890 and accommodated guests such as Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth of Austria until it was sold as apartments after World War II. Over the years this cape has been associated with many illegal “imports.” The trail we walk along today was used in the past by customs officers as they patrolled the area in search of pirates, robbers, and illicit importers. Today the cape is part of the municipality of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and enjoys a thriving economy based on agriculture, tourism, and retail shops.
