Tranquil Heidelberg, is such an awesome town, a place filled with history and friendly people. Heidelberg is located midway between Riversdale and Swellendam off the N1 National Road on the south coast of South Africe and is 276km's from Cape Town.
The town got it's name through German settlers arriving in South Africa in 1856, having the same name as the German city and established on the river banks of the Duiwenhoks River that flows from the Langeberg Mountains into the Indian Ocean. The town has an interesting history and there is an historical walking tour that can be easily followed.
There is a variety of Bed and Breakfast places as well as the old worlde charm of The Heidelberg Hotel.
I found a lovely place to stay 2 nights on the corner of Fourie Street, Aan De Kanal (On The Canal) owned by Cassie and Maret Koen, +27 028 722 1389 and cell 084 522 2350. Highly recommended, thank you Cassie and Maret for your awesome hospitality!

To continue our travels around the country we had to go back to Prince Albert where we left off in the last episode. On our way there we stopped off at Matjiesfontein. This historic town situated along the N1 is a must visit. This resort is situated in Riversdale, a bustling little town located on the N2 highway between Cape Town and George.
Our famous Dibiki hospitality and splendid facilities will ensure that your stay with us is a comfortable one. You will also have the well-known Sleeping Beauty mountain peak in the Langeberg Mountain watching over you. We offer grassed camping sites, some with private ablution and one-bedroom chalets for accommodation. S1 - Ep 18.2 – We discovered Garcia’s Pass outside Riversdale!
The road from Ladismith to Riversdale was the surprise. The race we had with the Ostrich was fun and we did not expect to find Garcia’s Pass, I didn’t even know it existed. Peace in this place, Windhoek Guest Farm | Riversdale Cape Town
We travelled to Riversdale, about 309 km's from Cape Town or about 3 hours scenic driving on the National Road N2 Garden Route. Riversdale is a town situated between Swellendam and Mossel Bay and the Langeberg Mountains forms an amazing backdrop to this beautiful town.
Entering Riversdale, I have to navigate via my GPS to find the gravel road to the guest farm. As you'll see in the video, it's a long stretch, about 20 km's driving along some beautiful pine forests and we stopped at the Korentepoort Dam Holiday resort. At this site there are self catering chalets, more information on the sign board in the video.
At the guest farm, the silence was actually heard, lots of green grass and fresh air!!
There are self catering chalets, a communal kitchen, lounge and dining area with a tv screen, table tennis and a pool table, you could also sit down to eat if you are a few together.
The lounging area is awesome, lovely sofas to relax and read a book or listen to music, a fire place to braai (bbq) or just to have a fire going, we used it as the weather became cooler and a bit of rain too!
There are hiking trails and a dam to fish or use the canoes and oh yes, free fire wood is available too!!

S1 – Ep 393 – Ashton – A Breathtaking View Overlooking the Town!
Our visit to Ashton was absolutely amazing and filled with incredible sights. The journey from Montagu itself was breathtaking, with stunning mountains, an old fort perched atop a fantastic tunnel we drove through, a modern bridge juxtaposed with an old rusted rail bridge - all of which left us in awe. We made a memorable stop at Platform 62, where a beautiful steam locomotive caught our eye and a leisurely walk-through Platform 62 only added to the charm. However, the highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the breathtaking view from a hill overlooking the town.
