Puy-de-Dôme (French: [pɥi də dom] ; Auvergnat: lo Puèi de Doma or lo Puèi Domat) is a department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the centre of France. In 2019, it had a population of 662,152. Its prefecture is Clermont-Ferrand and subprefectures are Ambert, Issoire, Riom, and Thiers.
Named after the Puy de Dôme dormant volcano, its inhabitants were called Puydedomois in French until 2005. With effect from 2006, in response to a letter writing campaign, the name used for the inhabitants was changed by the Puy-de-Dôme General Council to Puydômois; this is the name that has since then been used in all official documents and publications.

Riom is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in central France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department.
In 1985 Riom received the French classification of Ville d'Art et d'Histoire recognizing its sixteen classified historical monuments as well as another 57 on the supplementary listings. Several 17th- and 18th-century private houses (hôtels particuliers) are open to the public with collections of costumes and works of decorative art.
Riom's two major public squares are Place Jean-Baptiste Laurent and Place du pré-Madame in which stand two large fountains in homage to Desaix.

Puy de Sancy (Occitan: puèi de la Crotz, Mount of the Cross) is the highest mountain in the Massif Central. It is part of an ancient stratovolcano which has been inactive for about 220,000 years.
The northern and southern slopes are used for skiing, and a number of cablecars and skilifts ascend the mountain. Skiing has been practised on the mountain since the early 20th century. Two local priests traversed the Puy de Sancy on skis in 1905. In 1936, a cable car link was built from Mont-Dore to one of the needles just below the summit. In December 1965, a cable car accident injured ten passengers and killed seven others. Super-Besse is another ski resort, located on the southwestern slope.
The valley to the north is also the source of two streams called Dore and Dogne, which unite to form the Dordogne River, which flows through the nearby spa town of Mont-Dore and on to the Gironde estuary.

The French Railways, SNCF are very efficient. But they are also well known for their strikes. They are on a strike for multiple months. And such strikes affect regular travellers. But then that is the fun of travel.
I did not take the fast TGV trains. I preferred to take one of the slower corail trains because of my destination.
