Suspension Bridge to Castle Ruins - Highline 179, Reutte Austria 4K
Close to Baravia, experience a spine-tingling stroll across one of the worlds longest pedestrian suspension bridge - Highline 179 near Reutte, in this 4K Austria travel video. It also provides access to historic castle ruins on a mountain, in a spectacular panoramic setting. When built in 2014, Highline 179 footbridge held the record as the worlds longest of its type. The ruins of Ehrenberg Castle on the top of the mountain are a legacy to the historic trade route it controlled through this mountain pass – a route dating back to Roman times connecting the Mediterranean to northern Europe. Reutte is a market town of some 6,000 people but it can be called a tourist paradise as it has two seasons - winter and summer thanks to its Alpine location as well as a rich historical past which is shown in the buildings in the town as well as its 'highlights' which are located on the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman road leading from Italy to Germany and once protected by three fortresses, the remains of which one can see today and which are linked by the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world! Essential sightseeing includes the Ehrenberg complex with the Highline 179 bridge and Klause museum, the Alpentherme Ehrenberg spa, the bare foot walking trail, the old town and of course hiking in the mountains all around!
Reutte was declared a market town by Duke Sigmund in 1489 and this is still celebrated today with an annual festival on the first Saturday in August.
The salt trade above all brought great wealth to Reutte and this is evident in the style of the buildings with their ornate murals. From 1692 the painter Paul Zeiller had a workshop in Reutte that later became an art school. His son Johann Jakob Zeiller and cousin Franz Anton Zeiller both received their first lessons here and we can see their works in the many murals throughout the town.

Schlosskopf, Reutte, Austria
Perched at the top of a mountain around 1,250 metres above sea level. Schlossberg castle hovers 150 meters above the nearby Ehrenberg Castle in order to guard it from being outflanked which happened in 1703, when the Tyrolese reconquered the castle from the Bavarians thus making the requirement for a castle in this location obvious. Getting to the castle is quite strenuous but as can be seen in the photographs and film it is well worth it for the views over Reutte, the Lech Valley and the Alps.
The castle is comparitively modern, built more than 500 years after Ehrenberg castle below. The first part of the construction was begun with a guardhouse which in 1726 was enlarged into a fortress. You can see how difficult it is for the tourist to get up the mountain, therefore imagine how difficult it was for those building the castle and therefore its enormous cost which was three million florins. The castle never had to prove itself in a military action and with the decline in trade on the Via Claudia and hence the value of the pass, the castle was sold to two citizens from Reutte for 2,000 florins. These business people stripped all the useful assets leaving the walls which were too far up the mountain to bother with.
Thanks to renovation work since 2000 we can now enjoy the castle as part of the Ehrenberg complex.

In November 2014, the world’s longest Tibet-style footbridge Highline179 was completed between the Ehrenberg fortifications ruins and historic Fort Claudia, spanning the strategically important pass that these two structures were in part meant to guard. The bridge is 403 metres long, with a height of 114.60 m, 1.2m wide.
This new tourist attraction in Austria is only 20 km from Schwangau - Fussen and the German Romantic Road.

We took the time of a Saturday and visited this amazing place in Austria. We drove via Reutte to Ehrenberg and hiked around it.
You have all the mapping done to hike around.
It took us 3hrs to visit all the places which also included the photography time.
