Santa Clara - Cuba

In the geographic center of Cuba sits picturesque Santa Clara, a university town rich in culture and history, and the fifth largest in the island. Often overlooked by those on their way to tourist destinations, visiting Santa Clara can be a pleasant surprise for those looking for a more authentic Cuban experience, learn more about revolutionary icon Che Guevara, and take advantage to its central location in Cuba, close to excellent beaches and colonial gems like Remedios and Trinidad.

Church with Golden Altar - San Juan Bautista de los Remedios - Cuba

One of the Cuban most interesting and oldest ecclesiastical buildings, Remedios' main church dates from around 1550, although much of the current structure is the result of extensive 18th-century renovations. The wooden mudéjar ceiling was once the hull of a boat while the gold-leaf high altar is carved from Cuban cedar in classic baroque style. The church's main curiosity is a rare carving of a pregnant Inmaculada concepción made in Seville, Spain.

Remedios is the Cradle of the Parrandas, possibly the Caribbean's largest and oldest traditional festivity. Its patrons are San Juan Bautista and the Virgin of the Buenviaje. It is recognized as the eighth oldest city in Cuba, but its real date of foundation has been obscured over time, and it may be the second Spanish settlement on the island. Historians place the foundation date sometime between 1513 and 1524.

Remedios and Santa Clara, Cuba

This is a highly recommended excursion if you're visiting Cayo Santa Maria that you can book with your airline representative at the hotel you are staying.
On this 10 hour trip you will discover the colonial town of Remedios which dates back to the 1500s. You then visit the Hotel Santa Clara Libre at the center of Santa Clara and have lunch, then walk around the Boulevard before heading over to the Che Guevara museum and Revolution Square.
Along the way you also stop at a sugar mill factory with a steam train museum and also at a cigar factory.
Lunch is included but not breakfast, so you might want to get an early start for breakfast at your resort or prepare something from the day before.
Don't forget to bring your passport, bottled water, sunscreen, toilet paper and anything else you think you might need to have with you like meds, etc...

Cuba Travel - Santa Clara and Remedios

From Santa Clara we drove to a Rum factory with historic steam locomotives. After the factory visit we went on to Remedios. There we made a small city walk before returning to Santa Clara to the Hostal D'Cordero. In Santa Clara we stopped briefly at the Parque del Tren Blindado.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Cuba #bestplacestovisit - travel trends 2023

Cuba – Enjoy old-world architecture, famous cigars and classic cars in this long-isolated island nation. Check out Cuba’s top sights for travelers.

Despite being within easy reach of Florida and the Bahamas, #Cuba exists in a time and space all its own.

Explore Cuba’s capital, Havana, a city preserved by forts, a five-mile seawall, and an imposed embargo, which held back the excesses of the 20th century for over 50 years. Havana’s lure can be hard to resist, but a #vacation in Cuba can offer so much more beyond the seductive lights of its capital. In Cuba, a long sandy beach is never far away.

Sometimes it’s hard to know whether Cuba is awakening to the world, or if the world is awakening to Cuba. Whatever your politics, it's easy to admire this island nation that has proudly gone its own way. Cuba may still have one foot firmly in the past, but as the world tumbles towards tomorrow, we can be thankful for the many things it has not let go.

Remedios e Santa Clara
