Top 5 attractions of Namibia's capital - Windhoek city in southern Africa

Windhoek video, including aerial views of historical city center and its Top 5 attractions in Namibia, southern Africa.

#Windhoek #Namibia #SafariAfrica

Windhoek:

Timecodes:

0:19 Alte Feste
1:29 Christuskirche
2:35 Independence Museum
3:12 Parliament Gardens
4:06 Tentenpalast

Windhoek was founded in the valley that was most likely the bowl of the prehistoric lake which was proven by the fact that a vegetation layer was found during the construction of the Sanlam Building, Independence Avenue. Typical bottom of the lake deposits were found at the depth of 15 metres.

Nama called Windhoek AiGams (''Hot water'' because of hot springs of Windhoek) and Herero used name Otjimuise (''Place of smoke'') but it was Nama's chief Jonker Afrikaner who gave the town its present name - '' windy corner''. There are two versions for the origin of the name: windy place (only 28% calm days a year) and name of farm Winterhoek in the Cape where Afrikaner's family originally was from.
Windhoek climate makes it a very nice place to live in: mostly dry but with a quite reliable rainfall with an average of 360 mm a year. Another reason for establishing a settlement here were several fountains with good healthy water. German colonists found morass in the Windhoek's valley that they drained later. Windhoek's altitude is around 1650 m above sea level (railway station: 1642 m, International airport: 1680-1720 m, Ausspannplatz: 1650 m). The highest mountain around the capital is Grossherzog at 2330 m above sea level (south of Windhoek on the way to Rehoboth with TV tower on top).
The settlement was founded in 1840 by Jonker Afrikaner who built his first house next to present South African High Commission (previously Berg Hotel). For a long time Windhoek was a small settlement abandoned from time to time during Nama-Herero wars. 18 October 1890 Curt von Francois reached Windhoek with 32 men and commenced construction of Alte Feste establishing permanent German presence. Shortly after small fort was erected which forms part of Schwerinsburg castle now.

Sights and buildings
Alte Feste
National Monument. The oldest building in Windhoek (1890). Built as a headquarters for Schutztruppe and later served for South African troops the building was later used as a hostel for Windhoek High School (from 1935). Became a museum in 1962.
Floods in Namibia were frequent after periods of drought and caused damage to roads and railway lines.

Christuskirche
National Monument. Built in 1910.
Elisabeth House. Storch Street. National Monument. Built as a maternity home in 1908 and named after the Duchess Elisabeth zu Mecklenburg who was the wife of the President of German Colonial company.
Windhoek Railway station (Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue)
The southern wing and central building were built in 1912. In 1929 the northern wing was added, built in the same style. The station still serves its purpose.

Artillery and Kammer Gebaude (Hugel Street)
These buildings are probably two of the earliest in Windhoek, apart from Alte Feste.
Built in mid 1890 for artillery division of Schutztruppe as an ammunition strore and weapon repair shop.
Altes Bezirksgericht (Goethe Strasse)
High Court building. Built in 1908. Remained in use till late 60's when the new High Court building was opened near Kudu Monument. Presently serves as a headquarters of Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Schmerenbeck-Haus (Independence Avenue)
Located opposite of the Windhoek Municipality. Built in 1893, it was enlarged after 1900 and a gabled roof was added.

Top 5 attractions of small town Okahandja in Namibia, southern Africa

Okahandja town: top 5 attractions and historical images, Namibia, southern Africa.

#Okahandja #Namibia #Top5Africa

Okahandja:

Timecodes:

0:51 Lutheran Church
1:20 Mbangura Market
2:07 Railway station
2:48 Horse riding club
3:11 Moordkoppie
3:45 Bonus: old Okahandja

The Church of Peace (Friedenskirche Deutsche Evangelische-Lutherische Gemeinde), a Lutheran-Evangelistic church built in 1952, and also the house of Dr. Vedder, one of the oldest in town, are located in old part of Okahandja.

Just south of the post office, on Hoof Street, is a building known as the old stronghold, or the old fort. This was the town's old police station, started in 1894, though now it is empty and falling into disrepair.

Mbangura Market

This craft market is Okahandja’s best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern Namibia, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and in town center.

Railway station

It serves the town of Okahandja and is part of the TransNamib Railway.

Okahandja is situated on the Windhoek - Swakopmund line, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay.

Okahandja is connected to a number of towns in the north of Namibia via the railway junction in Kranzberg, which lies on the Windhoek-Swakopmund-Walvis Bay route, and to the south and east of Namibia via Windhoek.

Moordkoppie

The historical animosity between the Nama and the Herero had its most emphatic expression at the Battle of Moordkoppie (Afrikaans for Murder Hill) on 23 August 1850. During the battle, 700 Herero under the command of chief Katjihene were massacred by Nama forces. Half of the victims were women and children, whose bodies were dismembered for the copper bangles on their arms and legs. The scene of this tragedy was a small rocky hill near the centre of town between the B2 and the railway line, 500 m north of the Gross Barmen turn-off.

Reit Club Okahandja - Horse riding club
In 1909 the club house was built by Dr. Fock, the Mayor of Okahandja, to be his residence. In 1958 it was made into a club house and stable yard called Reit Club Okahandja.

The Reit Club has numerous facilities for the equestrian sport, consisting of 120 stables, paddocks, a club house, a residence, jumping and dressage facilities with a cafe and a large spectator pavilion.

Moon Landscape in Namib-Naukluft Park, west coast of Namibia, southern Africa

Video of Moon Landscape near coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia.

#MoonLandscape #Namibia #NamibNaukluft

Two million years ago this canyon was a high mountain range, which became eroded by the actions of the Swakop River.

5 Facts about Moon landscape
The Moon Landscape is located within a 30-minute drive from the closest town, Swakopmund:
Swakopmund is a 40-minute drive from Walvis Bay International Airport.
The Moon Landscape is in a national park, and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
The travel terrain to this location is a combination of tarmac and gravel road.
Off-road driving is only permitted in designated areas.
The best time of day to film at the Moon Landscape is during sunrise or late afternoon, in order to capture the contrasts of the canyon.

If you're on a quest to see Weltwitschia Mirabilis, continue east along the Weltwitschia Drive to the Moon Landscape, a vista across eroded hills and valleys carved by the Swakop River. Here you may want to take a quick 12km return side-trip north to the farm and oasis of Goanikontes, which dates from 1848. It lies beside the Swakop River amid fabulous desert mountains, and serves as an excellent picnic site.

Thank you for watching my videos. I will include all things to do with campervans, van conversions and the great outdoors. I am planning to tour South Africa and Namibia. I will try to offer advice, tips and tricks, review campsites and associated products or services. My intensions are to make videos of my rebuilding/revamping of my campervan and will include my travels and photography. People who know me also know me for my paint by light artwork and I will definitely have displays and workshops on my travels.

Rehoboth, Namibia with traditional music performed by Reho Combo

Around 90km south of Windhoek is the historical town of Rehoboth, set in a dense acacia woodland of camel thorn, sweet-thorn and candle-pod acacia, but with several natural hot-springs. Many travellers pass through this town on their way to Sossusvlei, Hardap Dam, Fish River Canyon and on to Namibia's other main southern tourist attractions.

The main inhabitants of the town are the Baster community, the descendants of people of mixed parentage who trekked across the Orange River under their leader Hermanus van Wyk, and settled at Rehoboth in 1870. The town is divided into 7 neighbourhoods, called blocks.

The history of the Rehoboth Basters is recorded in the Rehoboth Museum, where their cultural heritage and archaeological finds in the area, such as an open-air burial site, are recorded. A camel-thorn tree referred to as the Kaptein's Tree was the venue for the meetings of the Kapteinsraad, an equivalent of the Chief's Council, in earlier times.

Just west of Rehoboth (6km) is the Oanob Dam, which supplies Rehoboth with fresh water. This is also the site for the Lake Oanob Resort and Game Reserve, a favoured venue for day and weekend outings for locals and tourists alike, especially birdwatchers and water-sport enthusiasts. There are picnic places with barbecue facilities, a restaurant, bungalows and a number of walking trails around the dam. Another popular attraction for tourists and locals is the Reho-Spa which offers a heated indoor pool and outdoor pool.

An area of around 8,400ha referred to as the Acacia Forest and well known for its large camel-thorn trees (some are estimated to be 2 000 years old) lies within the municipal boundaries of Rehoboth.
Public amenities include a number of lodges in and around the town, a tourism centre, church, post office, market, bank, petrol station, primary and secondary schools, a district court and shops. The town is also served by Rehoboth railway station.
