A tour around Monsaraz. Xerez, Orada, Corval, Valentine Rock and the Monsaraz River Beach.
* Monsaraz: *

* Cromeleque do Xerez *
The Xerez's cromlech was erected between the beginning of the 4th and the mid-3rd millennium BC. Its unique quadrangular shape develops around a central menir of about 4m in height, which presents on one of its faces several dimples in all their verticality.
This megalithic monument consists of 50 granite menirs, of phallic form, whose height varies between 1,20m and 1,50m. Although the majority of these menhirs are partially fractured, the fact that they are prostrate in situ, allowed the eventual reconstruction of its original form.
This cromlech was the only monument in the region to be transferred in 2004 due to the construction of the Alqueva dam, next to the Convent of the Orada.
* Convento da Orada: *
Implanted in the middle of the plain, north of the town of Monsaraz and near the place of Ferragudo, the Convent of the Orada stands out for its size and whiteness in a sparsely wooded area.
The place where today stands the cross in front of the church, corresponds to the space occupied by an old hermitage founded by D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. This hermitage underwent profound changes in the late sixteenth century, having passed to the Order of Santiago by the will of the Duke of Braganza. Finally, in 1670, the temple was given to the Barefoot Augustinians who, in 1700, founded the convent, demolishing the secular hermitage.
The construction of the convent will only be completed in 1741 but, shortly after, in 1755, will suffer with the impact of the great earthquake. In 1820, on the occasion of the restructuring of the order, part of the assets of the already extinct convent of Nossa Senhora da Orada were annexed to the convent of Portalegre.
* Fluvial Beach of Monsaraz: *
The Fluvial Beach of Monsaraz, situated in the Nautical Center of Monsaraz, in an inland zone far from the sea, is the first fluvial beach of the Alqueva reservoir.
* São Pedro do Corval: *
The tradition of pottery in São Pedro do Corval goes back to prehistoric times, due to the existence of deposits of clays, which have always motivated this activity.
Through pots, potters' wheels and ovens, we find unique traditional utility pieces that carry us back to the old days when the clay was molded to the needs of the fields and the humble lives in the Alentejo.
Today we find in São Pedro do Corval true works of art, both in form and in decoration - ceramic painting - made with an ancestral knowledge and a characteristic aesthetic of the region. Together with the unique experience of being able to see the clay to be molded by the experienced hands of the master potter on his wheel and to share his knowledge and experiences, São Pedro do Corval, with more than 20 docks in constant excellence the largest center of potters in the country and one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.
* Menir da Rocha dos Namorados: *
It is a menir consisting of a block of natural granite, more than two meters high, which has a shape similar to that of a mushroom or a uterus.
This rock is associated with a centuries-old pagan fertility rite, which consists of: the girls of marriageable age, will consult the rock (as if it were an oracle), to know how much time remains to be married. For this purpose they shoot up the menhir, a stone. If this stone does not stand on the rock and fall to the ground, it means they have to wait another year for the wedding. This consultation with the valentine's rock was usually done on Easter Monday.

Monsaraz | Alentejo | Portugal
Monsaraz ė uma povoação fortificada medieval construida após a reconquista Cristã para a consolidação da fronteira alentejana. O rei D.Afonso III tinha ido para sul e reconquistado todo a parte a sul do Tejo até ao Algarve em 1249, faltava agora proteger e consolidar a fronteira de todo este território para nascente.
Muitas destas zonas fronteiriças anteriormente à reconquista, estavam ameaçadas pelas ofensivas árabes e foram confiadas às Ordens Militares.
O castelo com as suas 5 torres tem início no reinado D.Afonso III com a participação dos Templários.
No reinado seguinte D.Dinis constroi a Torre de Menagem e toda a cerca urbana.
No reinado seguinte D.Fernando constroi a cortina interior de separação da alcaçova do castelo com o casario da vila
Tal como em Nisa e outras vilas de fronteira alentejana, esta é uma Bastide, ou seja, uma vila planeada, seguindo um padrão geométrico. Isso aconteceu não só em Portugal, mas também no sul de França, leste da Alemanha, sul da Itálica e Secília e também na fronteira entre Aragão-Navarra em Espanha. Eram regiões pouco povoadas e de instabilidade política, recentemente conquistadas.
Esta vila é de facto de visita obrigatória, não tanto pela arquitectura religiosa, mas sim pelos exemplares de arquitectura tradicional alentejana preservados.
Na década de 1930 a vila estava a ficar em ruina e desertificada. Em 1946 a DGEMN classifica esta Vila como património Nacional e decreta uma Zona Especial de Proteção ZEP, ou seja, na prática ninguém pode construir nada sem a apreciação oficial, sendo a única forma de ter o património histórico preservado para futuras gerações.
Só em 1955 é que o estado executa o restauro de Monsaraz, mas é esse restauro e a classificação como monumento nacional que dão a qualidade e visibilidade que Monsaraz tem actualmente.
Na Porta da Vila estão esculpidas várias medidas utilizadas para comercio, leis e construção : a Vara e a meia Vara entre outras
A Casa da Inquizição, é uma antiga casa do século 17 com um painel de azulejos da mesma época. Esta seria a casa de alguém ligado ao Santo Ofício de Évora.
A Igreja matriz foi construída no séc. XVI e veio substituir a anterior que por ser pequena não permitiu o sepultamento dos habitantes que morreram durante a peste. O interior é interessante pelas suas proporções quase quadradas.
A alcaçova do castelo foi transformada em praça de touros em 1830. Antes tinha poço e cisterna, casa do alcaide e armazens.
No baluarte voltado a nascente Esta Ermida é o monumento mais antigo de Monsaraz sendo inicialmente um edifício fúnebre, ou um pequeno santuário muçulmano do domínio almóada (séc. XI-XII) que foi mais tarde convertido numa ermida cristã dedicada ao padroeiro dos Templários e Hospitalários : S.João Baptista.
A ermida de S.Bento foi fundada com os donativos dos moradores de Monsaraz no séc. XVI.

Visitar Monsaraz é conhecer um lugar mágico, uma pequena vila de casas caiadas de branco guardada por um castelo e muralhas medievais, e situada numa imponente crista rochosa de onde se têm vistas para a imensa planície alentejana e para o grande lago de Alqueva.
Apesar de Monsaraz estar localizada no Alentejo interior, a poucos quilómetros da fronteira espanhola, a vila assumiu-se nos últimos anos também como destino de praia, neste caso de albufeira. Isto porque a margem da albufeira do Alqueva, o maior lago artificial da Europa, está mesmo ao lado de Monsaraz, que possui agora uma praia fluvial que atrai cada vez mais aqueles em busca de um banho para fugir ao calor alentejano, um passeio de barco para explorar as ilhas da albufeira, ou da adrenalina das actividades aquáticas. O concelho de Reguengos de Monsaraz possui vários pontos de acesso ao lago e muitos quilómetros de margem, sendo esta uma atracção que tem vindo a contribuir para o desenvolvimento da região.

Gravado em 4K pelo meu Drone, esta aldeia, super acolhedora e de gentes fantásticas, mostra o que melhor tem. Comida Absolutamente deliciosa, deste sopa de tomate, bacalhau, legumes cozidos, carne de caça, etc. Poderia ficar aqui a falar o dia todo de gastronomia. Portugal tem realmente uma cultura fantástica e digna de ser reconhecida no mundo inteiro. Aconselho vivamente uma visita a esta aldeia para quem gosta de sossego, convívio e natureza.

Another one of my trips this time to Alentejo, more specifically to Reguengos de Monsaraz, Aldeia da Venda.
Recorded in 4K by my Drone, this village, super welcoming and with fantastic people, shows the best it has. Absolutely delicious food, from tomato soup, cod, boiled vegetables, game meat, etc. I could stay here all day talking about gastronomy. Portugal really has a fantastic culture worthy of being recognized worldwide. I strongly recommend a visit to this village for those who like peace, conviviality and nature.

Located in the Monsaraz National Park, Bio-Oásis de Monsaraz offers spacious air-conditioned cottages with a view of Alqueva Lake and the Alentejo’s planes. The unit has a swimming pool with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Each cottage features a fully equipped kitchenette and a separate seating and dining area with a sofa and satellite TV. The modern private bathroom has a shower and basin.
Local cafés and restaurants are in the medieval village of Monsaraz, a 5-minute drive away serving local Portuguese and Iberian-style cuisine. Guest can also make use of the barbecue facilities at Bio-Oásis de Monsaraz.
Bio- Oásis has a sun terrace and outdoor seating areas where guests can relax and take in the surrounding views. Activities such as hiking, horse riding and canoeing on the Alqueva’s Lake can be arranged.
Castelo de Monsaraz and Porta de Monsaraz are within a 10-minute drive away. Badajoz Airport is within a 2-hour drive away. A shuttle service is available. There is free parking on site.

We made a little trip to Monsaraz, located in Alentejo, a beautiful part of Portugal.
Monsaraz is just 2hrs away from Lisbon and you get the chance to see an amazing landscape, with animals and big farms.
We had lunch in a famous and typical restaurant called “Adega Velha”, where it’s peoole still perfm some amcient rituals, like the famous singing, considered a world heritage. Next stop to Mansaraz catle, with a village inside, hotels and restaurants. Enjoy the beautiful view from the top.

O Monte das Serras situa-se a 10 km de Reguengos de Monsaraz, na estrada de Alandroal.
É uma herdade com 31,3 hectares com produção com 13 hectares de vinha tinta - 30% Aragonez, 30% Trincadeira, 30% Alicante Bouschet e 10% Moreto - com rega gota a gota, plantada em 2003.
Ano 2009 - Plantou-se 1.2 hectares da casta tinta Syrah e 3.5 hect. de encepamentos brancos - 50% de Antão Vaz, 25% Arinto e 25% Verdelho.
Possui uma adega para capacidade de 90.000 litros em inox, com controlo de temperaturas de fermentação.
Caraterísticas do espaço: Vinha, Instalações para rnanufatura/producilo
Atividades: permite a participação no processo, faz provas/degustação
