Assisted Natural Regeneration for Semi-arid and Arid Lands

Assisted Natural Regeneration for Semi-arid and Arid Lands. A brief presentation by David A. Bainbridge (Restoration Ecologist from San Diego, CA).

Talks about deserts, degraded dry lands, due to overgrazing.
Understanding the History of why, how?
How can these damages be mitigated with policy or education?
Challenges of Climate Change.
Resource Limitations in arid and semi-arid lands.
Focus on understanding the historic structure. For assisted natural regeneration we need to consider ecosystem function, particularly water flow on, over and through the site. And look at changes in soil properties from disturbed conditions to the conditions today.
How to catch every drop of water, using water catchments.
Kimseed Camel Pitter, low cost option.
Flow capture, lining the waterway with simple check dams and brush weirs. Larger flood flows may be spread using brush weirs, with field edges protected by pole planted populus and Salix trees. Examples are shown in Mexico and the Mojave Desert and Bangladesh.
At smaller scale rainwater catchments can be setup, able to capture rainfall with less than 1 mm of rain. Using a water harvesting rainwater membrane.
Nabatea, in Jordan, Israel. Cisterns were plastered to keep water from seeping in.
Beaver dams can also be used for dams. Beaver once prolific in North America, are now being introduced again. Example of Idaho rancher Jay Wilde who released 9 beaver on his watershed. The beaver built 175 dams in just 5 years. Hard workers and don't cost anything. Beaver dam examples also in Susie Creek Nevada. Dams effective even in arid areas, retain water in ecosystems, can recharge groundwater, extend seasonal flows, and enhance biodiversity.
Protect natural seedlings. One of the best things to do is protect the seedlings. Protection can be done with branches, rocks, wire cages, or tree shelters.
Seed collection, cleaning and storage considerations. Creating resource islands, an area within a site that gets a fence of some kind to provide a local source of seeds that can seed the site year after year. Where possible supplemental irrigation can make a big difference.
Seed collection is low cost, collect mature fully ripe seeds. Understand seed dormancy, and treat seeds as needed.
Flood seeder can be made to release seeds during a flood event. This gets seeds out during the most advantageous times.
Supplemental irrigation may be needed at times to keep plants alive. There are a wide number of superficial , clay pots, leaky pipes, deep pipes, wicks, oyas, clay pipes. Enough to keep them alive, maybe not growing, but alive until rains come again.
Low cost option is to seed in the basins, if possible add mulch, organic matter, and put several species out right before most likely rainfall.
Grazing exclusion. Fencing can make a big difference.
Grazing management plan to provide protection of plants. Difficult but can be critical for protection of plants in ecosystem. Rotational grazing, mixed species grazing, protection of riparian areas, or selected plots will provide better understanding of impacts of grazing. Dryland adapted goats.
Biggest resource of these drylands is the people.
May have limited natural resources, learn quickly what helps, and follow up over the years. Improve their income and quality of life.
Farmer to farmer information transfer is critical. Demonstration sites can offer a farmer a guaranteed income, while testing new crops, grazing, irrigation, soil prep, fencing and feeding, reducing the risk for innovation.
Natural regeneration can also be assisted by improved home gardens. Explore agroforestry options for food for people and animals. Possible funding for carbon sequestration. Buried clay pots have remarkable survival rates.
Assisted regeneration can be effective
Capture water
Protect seedlings
Collect and place seeds
Plant seeds in basins with amendments
Manage grazing
Improve home gardens
Encourage long term projects.

South America Road Trip with Guayakí Cebadores!

Traveling through South America isn't necessarily about the destination, it's about the journey. A few months ago, we dove straight into the heart of mate drinking land where locals bring their gourds and thermoses EVERYWHERE with them! Us cebadores felt like we were finally home amongst all of our newfound OG mate drinking amigos.

From Colonia, Uruguay to the southeastern border of Brazil and back to Buenos Aires, there are endless opportunities for memorable mate moments! All of the regions were incredibly rich in culture, each with their own unique qualities.

Rambling through the countryside in Uruguay during a seemingly endless road trip, we often thought, Are we there yet? but getting out for a mate break and stretch always set us straight again. The rural landscape and connection to the ocean makes for lots of horseback riding, surfing, and fishing, all of which locals do for both work and fun.

At the border of Uruguay and Brazil, we had the privilege of visiting Ambá, an interdisciplinary group working to conserve and regenerate the native biodiversity of this region. There, two prime signifiers of ecosystem health live abundantly: jaguars and wild yerba mate. Their work is truly inspiring and beautiful.

We celebrated Carnaval in the plazas of Uruguay to the beat of local drum groups who set the tone for a memorable day of festivities.

After thoroughly exploring Uruguay, we took the ferry across the river to Buenos Aires to check out a host of different historical sights, concerts, art shows, mercados, and even ended up being there in alignment with the revolutionary Women's March of 2019.

One day we headed to the countryside of Buenos Aires where we got to experience the traditional and contemporary gaucho lifestyles. A group of them hosted us for horseback riding and a proper asado (barbecue).

On top of it all but not featured in this video, our dear friends Gauchos del Mar took us to Mar del Plata to surf. As exhausted as we were from weeks of travel and event production, it was just one of those invitations you cannot say no too. We seized the day, pounded some yerba, and were stoked to continue the adventure!

By the end of our time in South America, we were beyond mateada (that feeling you get when you drink too much yerba!) and well fed, with countless new friends and memories to hold us over for a lifetime. We are so grateful to all who opened their doors and arms to us to share a piece of their lives and culture. We shall be back...
