In this video, we'll be taking a look back at some great old places from the Wisconsin Dells of the Past, including theme parks, attractions, restaurants, and a look at Broadway in Downtown Dells.

Wisconsin Dells has been the most popular family vacation destination in Wisconsin for many decades. Visitors began coming to the Dells area as early as 1856 because of the scenery. The scenery is responsible for the early development of the area as a tourist attraction which is why we put scenery at the top of the list for the best of the Dells.

While the entire area is surrounded by trees, some of the best scenery is only available from the Wisconsin River. Due to the unique and amazing scenery where the river carved out rock formations in the bluffs along the Wisconsin River, boats started hauling tourists to see these wonders. Army surplus land and water vehicles, affectionately known as “Ducks”,also established a scenic route through the forests and across the waters to create a ride that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

The second best thing about the Dells is the water. In addition to the mighty Wisconsin River, there is also Lake Delton, a man made lake that provides for fishing and boating. The lake became the home of the next large attraction to come to the area in the 50’s and that was Tommy Bartlett's Water and Ski show. With all this water surrounding the area, it just seemed natural that someone would eventually create a water park. One water park grew into several waterparks until Wisconsin Dells became known as the water park capitol of the world. Noah’s Ark grew to become the largest outdoor water park in the country while several resorts began to add waterparks on their grounds. The very first waterpark in the United States was built at the Polynesian Resort in 1994. Soon indoor water parks were built to allow year around splash fun. The Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, The Wilderness, Mt. Olympus and Chula Vista all feature both indoor and outdoor water parks.

The next best thing about the Dells is its size. There are fewer than 3,000 residents in either Lake Delton or Wisconsin Dells. Visiting the area is akin to a drive in the country. There are no tall buildings, the downtown is only a few blocks long and there are lots of trees. The area has been able to retain its sleepy, countryside atmosphere.

The Dells is home to one of the oldest Native American tribes in Wisconsin, the Ho-Chunks. They were able to share their culture with the tourists in a variety of ways. In addition to selling home made items in local trading posts, they also performed the Stand Rock Ceremony for 78 years. Accompanied by various percussion instruments, the dancers were adorned in brightly-colored intricate costumes. The details shown on the costumes held special meaning to the tribes, and coupled with the movements, bared resemblance to various woodland and water creatures. Eventually, the nation concentrated on gaming and went on to build a casino south of Lake Delton. They are still providing entertainment but of a different type these days.

Finally, some of the best dining anywhere can be found here. There are 5 super clubs that have been in operation since the 50’s and are still going strong. Beginning at the north end of the Dells, Chula Vista resort is home to Kaminski Chop House. They have been serving mouth watering steaks and seafood for over 70 years. Next on the list is Field’s Steak and Stein. They used to be located out of town but recently relocated next to the Wilderness resort in Lake Delton. Two of the best know super clubs happen to be across the street from each other. Jimmy’s Del Bar is on the east side of Hwy 12 and The House of Embers is on the west side, halfway between Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells. Finally, the number one super club in Wisconsin, the Ishnala sits on the banks of Mirror Lake. It has an envious view of the lake from any seat in the house.

The Dells area has opened its arms to sporting venues, Justagame Fieldhouse provides a multi court basketball/volleyball venue. This facility hosts tournaments throughout the year and is a popular destination because of its location in the Dells. For outdoor sports, Woodside Sports Complex hosts baseball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling. They also have a 90,000 square foot air support facility for indoor ply during the winter. Then there is golf. There are 6 courses in the Dells area – Trapper’s Turn, 27 holes, Christmas Mountain Village, 27 holes, Cold Water Canyon, 18 holes, Wild Rock, 18 holes, Spring Brook, 9 holes and Pinecrest, 9 holes.

Still, the Dells is a fond memory for those who have visited in the past and continues to create fond memories for those visiting today and in the future.

Driving Around Small Town Reedsburg, Wisconsin in 4k Video

Filmed on Wednesday, August 16 2023, I drive around the village Reedsburg, WI to see what's going on.

Located in the picturesque surroundings of Sauk County, Wisconsin, Reedsburg is a city that boasts a rich history and a vibrant community spirit. Founded in 1868 along the tranquil Baraboo River, the city was named in honor of early settler David C. Reed and has since grown to become a key part of the Baraboo Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The abundance of natural resources, particularly lumber, attracted early settlers to Reedsburg. The Babb family, one of the first to make the area their home, played a significant role in establishing the community. The city’s history is also marked by the influence of the Winnebago people, who identified convenient crossing points along the Baraboo River.

David C. Reed, a name now synonymous with the city, was instrumental in its early development, building both a dam and sawmill which would lay the groundwork for the city's future growth. By 1852, the community was platted, and it wasn’t long before the town experienced a surge in population and industry.

The late 1800s were a period of significant change for Reedsburg. Following a short-lived prosperity brought about by the hop boom, the city diversified its agricultural practices, leading to a reputation for grain and dairy product excellence. The arrival of the Chicago & North Western Railway in 1872 further bolstered the local economy, connecting Reedsburg to larger markets and facilitating growth.

Main Street became a bustling hub of activity during this time, with grocery stores, banks, and various businesses taking root. The establishment of the Reedsburg Brewing Company in 1880 and the opening of the Webb and Schweke department store in 1883 marked significant milestones in the city's commercial development.

The 1900s saw Reedsburg undergo numerous transformations, particularly in its industrial sectors. The Reedsburg Woolen Mill, a once dominant employer, adapted to changes in market demands, shifting its focus from clothing to novelty fabrics. Meanwhile, Hankscraft Company emerged as a key player in the baby product industry, eventually being acquired by Gerber Products Company.

Community spirit thrived during this century, with the establishment of Webb Park and Webb High School, thanks to a generous trust fund left by Herbert Webb. The Butter Festival, now known as Butterfest, became a beloved annual tradition, celebrating the city’s agricultural roots.

Entering the new millennium, Reedsburg continued to evolve and adapt. The city faced challenges, such as the Baraboo River flood in 2008, but also celebrated new beginnings, including the inception of the annual Fermentation Fest in 2011.

Reedsburg, Wisconsin, is a city that has navigated the ebbs and flows of time with resilience and grace. From its early days as a burgeoning settlement along the Baraboo River to its present status as a thriving community, Reedsburg has maintained a strong sense of identity and purpose. The city’s rich history, coupled with its geographical beauty and diverse population, makes it a unique and cherished part of Wisconsin’s cultural tapestry.
