Welcome to the Italian Riviera! Also known as Liguria or the Ligurian Coast, this region of Italy stretches from France in the west to Tuscany in the east along the Mediterranean coast and is known for its idyllic fishing villages like Camogli, romantic resort towns like Portofino, and of course, delicious foods like pesto and focaccia – since they were created here! We had the pleasure of spending one full day exploring the beautiful coastline by bus, boat, and foot, and while one day is barely enough time to even scratch the surface of this incredible region, it was enough to let us know that we HAVE to come back!

Very few restaurants can compete with the long gastronomic tradition of this restaurant, which was named after its owner back in 1885! It was Manuelina herself who created the famous recipe for Recco focaccia. After more than 125 years of Ligurian history, the fourth generation now runs the business with the same passion and enthusiasm – on the one hand, the Focacceria in a clear tribute to Manuelina, and on the other, the “gourmet” restaurant serving seasonal cuisine which showcases the best local ingredients. Recco is a comune in the province of Genoa, region of Liguria, Italy. It is known for its focaccia al formaggio (focaccia with cheese) which is made with Crescenza. The consortium that dictates the official recipe of the focaccia, supposedly the result of a Saracen attack in the 1200s, is seeking the European Union PGI status for the recipe. Also famous is the September 8 fireworks festival honoring the Virgin Mary. The town is also known for its successful waterpolo team, Pro Recco. During WWII Recco's railway was bombed by the allies, destroying the town. It was rebuilt in the late forties and early fifties.

The Italian Riviera along the northwest coast of Italy has some of the most beautiful towns you could ever hope to visit. And one of the nicest is Camogli with its long beach on the Mediterranean Sea, and a row of pastel-colored buildings rising up behind it, with a lovely promenade containing many outdoor restaurants and cafes.

Above, in those pastel-colored buildings, are mostly private apartments, some of which are available as vacation rentals. There's also a picturesque small harbor for the fishing boats and the tourist excursion ships offering scenic rides along the coast. This is just the perfectly divine spot, which is why they call it the Gulf of Paradise -- a little bit of heaven, located 24 kilometers southeast of Genoa.
