Gold Mine Underground Tour - Johannesburg South Africa

The Gold Reef City theme park is situated on a 10Ha site which surrounds the then number 14 gold mine shaft at Crown Mines. Indeed, this 19th century gold mine produced 1.4 million kilograms of gold before closing in the 70’s.

The shaft was opened in 1897, thus only 11 years after Johannesburg was established and was part of the gold reef stretching 100 km from east of Boksburg to Randfontein in the west.

This made the Gold Reef City shaft 14 the world’s richest producer of gold, 1.4 million kilograms over its 90 year life span.

This shaft was then at its time, one of the deepest gold mines and worked by 30 000 miners.
Gold mine tour takes you back in time with a first hand look at an old mining town, as well as the vibrant life of such a gold town.

A miner’s language (Fanagalo) was developed in 1910. This then enabled the miners from different cultures and languages to communicate.
Fanagolo was simplistic consisting of only 2000 words relevant to gold mining, however 25% of these were swear words.

For miners, this was a tough way to earn a living with heat, dampness, darkness and additionally the ear shattering noise of drills.

Lighting was by candlelight, thus posing a continued risk of explosion due to the presence of methane gas.
Donkeys pulled the gold laden coco pans, staying down the mine for three months before then going blind.

There is gold remaining in the mine, however the price of gold at the time mine closed, made it uneconomical to remove.

The lower levels of the mine are currently flooded – 19th level to the 57th level. Thus, underground gold tours are conducted only up to 5th level.

Gold Reef Shaft No 14, in production for 84 years – 1887 to 1971 and indeed, at its time, deepest mine in the world.

Then travel down the Gold Mine shaft (under 5 years not allowed) in a large clangy lift to level 5 ( 720 feet – 226 meters) for a guided gold mine tour.

Walk down tunnels with a hard hat and torch in hand, so experience the tough conditions that gold miners had to endure.

Experience a short burst from a miners drill, this will accordingly give you an understanding as to why miners would go deaf without ear plugs.
Then see the mine manager’s office with the miner’s identity box. This then helped identify missing miners.

Follow the coco pan tracks past the red dynamite box and get a view up a 35 degree slope with little head room and then wooden steps that lead to the surface of the mine in the event of power failure.

Once back on the surface you experience daily demonstrations of pouring molten gold into gleaming bars of bullion and traditional miner’s gumboot dances on visiting the then mine manager’s house.

map of South Africa

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. With over 60 million people, the country is the world's 23rd-most populous nation and covers an area of 1,221,037 square kilometres (471,445 square miles). South Africa has three capital cities: executive Pretoria, judicial Bloemfontein and legislative Cape Town. The largest city is Johannesburg. About 80% of South Africans are of Black African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages. The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European (White South Africans), Asian (Indian South Africans and Chinese South Africans), and Multiracial (Coloured South Africans) ancestry.

The RSA is bounded to the south by 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline of Southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans; to the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe; and to the east and northeast by Mozambique and Eswatini (former Swaziland); and it surrounds the enclaved country of Lesotho.[18] It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World, and the most populous country located entirely south of the equator. South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot, with a diversity of unique biomes and plant and animal life.

South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, the fourth-highest number in the world. According to the 2011 census, the two most spoken first languages are Zulu (22.7%) and Xhosa (16.0%). The two next ones are of European origin: Afrikaans (13.5%) developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most Coloured and White South Africans; English (9.6%) reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life. The country is one of the few in Africa never to have had a coup d'état, and regular elections have been held for almost a century. However, the vast majority of black South Africans were not enfranchised until 1994.

During the 20th century, the black majority sought to claim more rights from the dominant white minority, which played a large role in the country's recent history and politics. The National Party imposed apartheid in 1948, institutionalising previous racial segregation. After a long and sometimes violent struggle by the African National Congress (ANC) and other anti-apartheid activists both inside and outside the country, the repeal of discriminatory laws began in the mid-1980s. Since 1994, all ethnic and linguistic groups have held political representation in the country's liberal democracy, which comprises a parliamentary republic and nine provinces. South Africa is often referred to as the rainbow nation to describe the country's multicultural diversity, especially in the wake of apartheid.

South Africa is an upper-middle power in international affairs; it maintains significant regional influence and is a member of both the Commonwealth of Nations and G20. It is a developing country, ranking 114th on the Human Development Index. It has been classified by the World Bank as a newly industrialised country, with the second-largest economy in Africa, and the 35th-largest in the world.] South Africa also has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa. Since the end of apartheid, government accountability and quality of life have substantially improved in South Africa.] However, crime, poverty and inequality remain widespread, with about a quarter of the population unemployed and living on less than US$1.25 a day. South Africa is in southernmost Africa, with a coastline that stretches more than 2,500 km (1,553 mi) and along two oceans (the South Atlantic and the Indian). At 1,219,912 km2 (471,011 sq mi),[86] South Africa is the 24th-largest country in the world.[87] It is about the same size as Colombia, twice the size of France, three times as big as Japan, four times the size of Italy and five times the size of the United Kingdom.[88]

Mafadi in the Drakensberg at 3,450 m (11,320 ft) is the highest peak in South Africa. Excluding the Prince Edward Islands, the country lies between latitudes 22° and 35°S, and longitudes 16° and 33°E.

The interior of South Africa consists of a large, in most places almost flat, plateau with an altitude of between 1,000 m (3,300 ft) and 2,100 m (6,900 ft), highest in the east and sloping gently downwards towards the west and north, and slightly lso to the south and south-west.[89] This plateau is surrounded by the Great Escarpment[90] whose eastern, and highest, stretch is known as the Drakensberg.[ mapa de Sudafrica

Msikaba Bridge N2 Construction - Wild Coast, South Africa

The bridge, which will span the 198-m-deep Msikaba river gorge, is being constructed by the CME joint venture (JV), a partnership between Concor and MECSA, both 100% black-owned Grade 9CE South African construction companies.

The bridge’s four huge anchor blocks are now at an advanced stage of construction, with more than 50% of the concrete for the two 127-m-high pylons poured, and the complex deck construction phase of the project about to start.

At 580 m in length, it will the longest cable-stayed bridge – in terms of main span – in Africa, and it will have the second longest main span of any bridge on the continent.

At 192 m above the floor of the gorge, it will also rank as one of the highest bridges in Africa, only exceeded by the Bloukrans bridge at 216 m and, once it is completed, Mtentu [bridge] at 223 m.

The bridge is being built from both the north and south banks of the gorge and comprises two identical halves, each spanning 290 m.

The halves will meet mid-point over the gorge.

Birding South Africa Part 1: Johannesburg & Zaagkuildrift Rd Oct 5-7 2018

So, me and my partner decided to go on a trip with Rockjumper Birding Tours to South Africa. The choice was grounded on the fact that it would give both of us many new Lifers, and I really wanted to see 1) giraffe and 2) Penguins.
I can already tell you that those goals were met to my satisfaction! (Not in this part though, giraffes won't appear until the first whole day in Kruger NP = Part 2)
This first part covers Oct 5-7.
Oct 5 was arrival day (1 day before the trip started), spent on rest and birding the garden of Sunrock Guest House. It was good for easy views of birds not likely to be seen later, like Red-headed Finch and Karoo Thrush.
Oct 6 was the first birding day of the organized trip, and was spent north of Johannesburg, along Zaagkuildrift Rd, for some specialties we wouldn't see during the rest of the trip.
Oct 7 was transport day: Jo-burg to Kruger NP, with some vital stops on the way (mainly Abel Erasmus Pass for Taita Falcon).
Also: we learned our lesson from the Alaska trip, so to this trip we got a cheap Panasonic videocam. I was a busy bee the first days, and filmed rather much. But, as always, the film-taking part decreased the longer the trip went on...
Also also: since this is Africa, and a stay at Kruger NP on top of that: LOTS of mammals, including decent looks/video/photos of The Big Five. (Kruger does a short appearing in the end of this part, but is the main feature of Part 2 & 3)
