Route 66 Trailhead Park in Rancho Cucamonga

Route 66 Trailhead Park is a small but neat park located on Historic Route 66 in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. The park was dedicated in 2012 and includes a portion of the original Route 66 roadway that you can walk on, an exhibit on the Pacific Electric Railway, grapes, a really cool bridge, and access to the Pacific Electric Trail. While this is a newer place to stop on the Mother Road, it is worth a quick visit if you find yourself in the area.

Checking Out the Cucamonga Service Station on Route 66

The Cucamonga Service Station dates back over 100 years, and predates Route 66 by a decade. There was once 1000s of service stations like this throughout the country. The service station was built in 1915 and has somehow managed to survive till today, and is the last remaining building of its type on Route 66 in California.

While it hasn't been a working service station since the 1970s, visiting today is like stepping back in time. Beautifully restored to its days as a Richfield Oil Station, the building now hosts a museum. This is one of the coolest places to stop on Route 66 in the Inland Empire.

The station was declared a historic landmark by the city of Rancho Cucamonga in 2019 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Classic Route 66 restaurants in Rancho Cucamonga, California

Three eateries along Foothill Boulevard (or old U.S. Route 66) near the Rancho Cucamonga/Upland boundary, that are close to each other, are spotlighted in this episode. Starting with the Magic Lamp Inn, Vince's Spaghetti (RC location) and the Sycamore Inn. The only one I went and dined inside was the Magic Lamp Inn (filmed three days after I first visited there with @adventurevin7600).

The only marker I found was outside the Magic Lamp Inn (a Hampton Hotels Save-a-Landmark sign). Surprisingly the Sycamore Inn does not have one outside their building (I mean, it's only been around since 1848!).

Cucamonga Service Station, Rancho Cucamonga, California

Also known as the Richfield Service Station, this is one of the most important places on California Route 66. At one time this was one of many service stations in the United States - but today, it is the only surviving station of its kind on Route 66 in California. It was in operation from the 1910s (before Route 66) to 1971. The building stood abandoned, but by 2009 the city of Rancho Cucamonga declared the property a City Landmark. Restoration of the building would later take part and by 2015, the station was re-opened as a museum and nostalgic place for Route 66 travelers from around the world to enjoy.

Hours of operation are not clear, but here's what I found:
Thurs-Sat: 10-3, Sunday 12-3
It is usually staffed by volunteers. Be sure to buy a souvenir or two from the gift shop!
