Travel in France: Ploërmel - The Best of Brittany? Is it Worth a Visit? It's Outdoor Market is WOW!

Looking for top travel tips? Is Ploërmel, France one of the best places in Brittany to visit?? It may not be the most common place to vacation - some French people might even say, You're going WHERE?? - but this Breton town has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. And it makes an excellent home base from which to explore the region. Whether you are staying for a short visit or a long one. And yes - you can see a lot even without a car.

Ploërmel has one of the best weekly outdoor farmer's markets I've ever been to. So plan a stay that includes a kitchen. You are going to want to cook for sure. It's a foodie's paradise! There are several boulangeries/patisseries (bakeries/pastry shops), several BIG supermarkets and many great places to eat out (even aside from Kebab Chez Tonton 56 ????) but that Friday market will make your little eyes go WOW I guarantee you.

If you like the outdoors, Ploërmel has one of the biggest lakes in Brittany and thus lots of watersports to enjoy as well as miles of phenomenal bike and walking trails and places to hike around. There are great museums, a bowling alley, a movie theater, local soccer/football games and great sites, towns and villages close by to explore.

I spent a month in Ploërmel and wrote a blog post about it for my website, Reganland.com. I wanted to see what it would be like to put together a video version of that post so I used it as a voice-over script and then assembled photos, video and web page content to create the video.

I won't be doing that again. ????

It was fun - a lot of work, but fun - however, based on what I learned through that process - next time, I'll use a different process! If I'd taken more photos and videos, that would have helped, but next time my whole approach will be different.

In any case - I hope you enjoy the video and even more so, I hope you make it out to Ploërmel sometime if you've not already been.

Cheers to good travel!

Two rivers run through it: Bayonne, French Basque country

There's a reason Bayonne's riverbanks along the Nive river (one of two rivers connecting here) sometimes get compared to Venice, Italy. Follow me on a short stroll by the Nive; listen to architectural and historical anecdotes about Bayonne's buildings and decide if you agree.

Limoges's central covered market

Limoges’s covered market is a local gourmet hotspot. Notice its remarkable Eiffel-inspired architecture and learn about how it was built.

This modern 19th century covered market, which replaced the town’s more traditional markets, was a popular place for shopping and for meeting up with friends and neighbours. New material was used such as iron, glass and ceramics. New hygiene rules were applied giving the building a whole new concept.
The first covered market was built on Place de la Motte in 1852. It soon became too small and was transferred to place Carnot, where it is still located today.
A new, more important project began: the central market hall, inspired by the works of Gustave Eiffel, with a metal structure, allowing for large openings and a rivetless frame.
This rectangular pavilion has an opening on each side, making its access more convenient and giving shoppers more space to walk around. Its base is made of granite and its brick walls have identical geometrical figures on them, giving rythm and colour to their lower parts.
There are arabesques on the higher parts. The building had cladding for ventilation, which was replaced by windows later on, reflecting different parts of Limoges, just like mirrors.
Above the cornice, the 328 panels are a rare tribute to the use of porcelain in Limoges’s architecture. They were made by students at the National Decorative Arts School, with the help of Limoges’s old Guérin porcelain factory. They represent various products which can be found on the market stalls. Nowadays, the market is open every morning. It is a local food hotspot, with 2 restaurants and about 40 shopkeepers with all types of foods, including meat and fish.

Halles de Questembert (a historical covered market in Brittany)

Not all outdoor markets are created equal. Les Halles de Questembert, built in the 17th century on the site of an older market, were the largest market structure erected in Brittany under Louis XIV (the Sun King.)

The building's roof has been a Historical Monument of France since the 1920s. As it should.

Day 26 of the public transportation strike in Paris... Walking, walking, walking (and loving my walks when the weather is as spectacular as it was this morning, as I led a tour on the Left Bank.) I met soooo many tourists in the Germain des Prés neighborhood today! Glad they made it to Paris for the Holidays in spite of the strike.

Here's a video I captured on the way back to the Right Bank. Metro Line 1 (one of two Metro lines still operating in the French capital,) is now, more than ever, many Parisians' lifeline.

Enjoy the sights, and if you are in need of a native French tour guide to show you around Paris, in English or in French, reach out!
A bientôt,

Back to Gallo-Roman times in Lyon

Lyon, once better known as Lugdunum, the former capital of the Three Gauls, reserves many surprises. A favorite area of mine since I lived there during my college years, have been the steep slopes of la Croix-Rousse, a former working-class neighborhood, and the heart of the silk trade, overlooking the city.

This is Lyon's other hill, (Fourvière draws more visitor traffic,) and I am taking you to the other amphitheater. Stick with Véro, and you will look at France through the eyes of a native and explore off the beaten-path. :-)
