Cherbourg-Octeville (ʃεʁbuʁɔktəvil ;Prononciation du titre dans sa version originale Écouter) est une ville française du département de la Manche. Ancienne commune résultant de la fusion des communes de Cherbourg et d'Octeville le 1er mars 2000, elle devient commune déléguée de Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, commune nouvelle créée le 1er janvier 2016 et issue de la fusion de Cherbourg-Octeville, Équeurdreville-Hainneville, La Glacerie, Querqueville et Tourlaville.

Die historische Hafenstadt Cherbourg ist heute ein Ortsteil und die Kernstadt von Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. Sie war bis 2000 eine selbständige Gemeinde im Département Manche in der Region Normandie im Norden Frankreichs. Die Hafenstadt hat einen Seehafen mit einer Flottenbasis der französischen Marine und einem nennenswerten Yachthafen. Die an der Nordküste der Halbinsel Cotentin direkt am Ärmelkanal gelegene Stadt ist Sitz einer Unterpräfektur. Im Jahr 2000 fusionierte die Stadt Cherbourg mit der Nachbargemeinde Octeville und trug seither den Doppelnamen Cherbourg-Octeville. Mit dem Jahresbeginn 2016 kam es zur weiteren Fusion von Cherbourg-Octeville mit Équeurdreville-Hainneville, La Glacerie, Querqueville und Tourlaville, und so heißt die gesamte Gemeinde heute Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
Cherbourg ist einer der facettenreichsten Häfen der Normandie. La Hague est une péninsule du Cotentin située au nord-ouest du département français de la Manche. Depuis le 1er janvier 2017, la région se confond presque entièrement avec le territoire de la commune nouvelle de la Hague, formée par la fusion des communes de l'ancienne Communauté de communes de la Hague, mais elle déborde les limites de la commune vers le sud sur Querqueville et quelques autres localités. La Hague offre des paysages remarquables et sauvages et a gardé, pour l'essentiel, ses villages et son habitat traditionnel. Dans la Hague, se trouve le site de l'usine de retraitement de déchets nucléaires, souvent désigné comme « le site de la Hague » et par raccourci « la Hague ».
Presqu'île du Cotentin
Autrefois, la partie nord du Cotentin était presque une île, séparée du continent par les Marais de la Douve (Parc naturel régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin). Seule une mince bande de terre dans les landes de Lessay le reliait au continent2. Aujourd'hui, grâce aux portes à flot3 situées sur la côte ouest, mais avant tout sur la côte est, en baie des Veys, elle n'est plus qu'une péninsule. Le Cotentin est bordé par le golfe de Saint-Malo, la Manche centrale et la Baie de Seine.
Les plus vieilles roches de France affleurent dans la Hague, en particulier à Jobourg.
La Manche est classiquement divisée en trois grands secteurs : Manche Occidentale, Centrale et Manche Orientale.

Géologiquement, le Cotentin fait partie du Massif armoricain, à l'exception du Plain, rattaché au Bassin parisien.
Aux caps correspondent les roches les plus dures (granite, gneiss ou grès). Aux baies les roches les plus tendres6 :

Cap de la Hague ;
Nez de Jobourg ;
Cap de Flamanville ;
Cap de Carteret ;
Cap Lihou à Granville.
Au cours de l'histoire, les limites du Cotentin ont évolué. Le mot désignait d'abord le pays de Coutances, chef-lieu du diocèse qui lui a donné son nom. Dès le xie siècle, le terme Cotentin désigne en général la partie septentrionale de ce diocèse, bornée au nord, à l’ouest et à l'est par la mer, et au sud par une ligne qui, partant de la baie des Veys, suit les cours de la Douve et de la Scye, correspondant au territoire jusqu’en 1789, de l'archidiaconé du Cotentin, bien distinct de celui de Coutances. À partir de 1204, le bailliage du Cotentin couvre le diocèse de Coutances, avant que ne lui soit adjoint, sous Louis IX, l'Avranchin et du val de Mortain, dans le Grand bailliage du Cotentin, alors que certains, comme sous Charles V ont pu voir leurs attributions élargies aux diocèses de Lisieux, Bayeux et Séez.
Cap de la Hague is a cape at the tip of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, France.
The La Hague area has precambrian granite and gneiss cliffs, several coves and small fields surrounded by hedges. France's oldest rocks are to be found on its coast in Jobourg. Other rocky outcroppings on the coast include Cadomian granite in Auderville and Variscan granite in Flamanville.
The dialect of the Norman language spoken by a minority in the region is called Haguais. The Norman poet Côtis-Capel was a native of the region and used the landscape as inspiration for his poetry. The painter Jean-François Millet was also a native of the region.
The La Hague site, the largest light water reactor nuclear waste reprocessing plant on earth (over half of the world's capacity), is located in the region.
