Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, an autonomous prefecture (prefecture-level administrative region) under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, is located in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, at the junction of four provinces and cities, Xiang, Hubei Province to the north, Chongqing City to the west, and Guizhou Province to the southwest. The administrative region has a total area of 15,500 square kilometers. Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is located in a low-latitude zone with a humid subtropical monsoon climate. As of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was 2,488,105.
The territory of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture belonged to Qianzhong County of Chu during the Warring States period, and on August 1, 1952, the Central People's Government approved the establishment of Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Region (at the prefectural level) by dividing the land of Qiancheng, Phoenix, Yongsui, Luxi, Guzhang and Baoding into six counties. 1955, Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Region was renamed Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and on September 20, 1957, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was established. As of October 2021, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture has 1 county-level city and 7 counties under its jurisdiction; the People's Government of the Prefecture is located at No. 58, Renmin North Road, Jishou City.
Within the jurisdiction of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is the first national historical and cultural city of Phoenix County, which was selected as one of the first national demonstration areas for all-area tourism in 2015. There are many humanistic monuments in the state, and a large number of natural and humanistic landscape relics in and around Laosi City. Xiangxi is also one of the birthplaces of Wuling culture. It also enjoys the policies of the National Western Development Plan, and is one of the three prefecture-level administrative regions singled out to enjoy the relevant policies.
