The present Tenkasi district was a part of erstwhile Tirunelveli district. Tenkasi district was formed in 2019.
Tenkasi shares its boundaries with Virudhunagar in the North, Thoothukudi in the East, Tirunelveli in the South and Kerala in the West. The district is nourished by two major rivers namely Chittar and Anumanadhi, because of which agriculture flourishes in this area. More than 65% of the population is engaged in agriculture and related activities. Water sources such as Gundar, Adavinayinar, Karupanadhi and Ramanadhi dam along with more than 800 tanks succour irrigation.
The waterfalls formed by the rivers attract a lot of tourists to the district. The famous Coutrallam falls situated in the river Chittar is well known across the state. The water from this falls is believed to have medicinal properties, because of which the falls is considered as a “medical spa”. Among 8 other falls in the district, Peraruvi, Aindharuvi and Puli aruvi are prominent ones.
Tenkasi is known for some of the significant spiritual places in South Tamilnadu. The Kutraleeshwarar temple (Chitra Sabha) is located in Tenkasi. It is one of the five sabhas of Nataraja, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Tamil poet Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar describes the imposing beauty of this place in his poem “Kutrala Kuravanji”. The Kasi Viswanathar temple, Sankarankoil temple, Pottalpudur darga, Ilangi Kumarar temple are the spiritual places located here.

We travelled from Tiruvalla to Tenkasi on a pilgrimage trip to Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple . Tenkasi is the Thekkan Kasi or Southern Kasi. It is believed that darsan of Tenkasi Viswanathar Temple is equivalent to visiting Kasi ( Varanasi) Temple. It was a splendid journey , especially, the journey from Thenmala to Tenkasi.This video depicts the enchanting beauty of nature on the way to Tenkasi from Thenmala . It portraits the mesmerising beauty of nature on the way. Also you can see the royal look of the Kasi VISWANATHAR Temple Rajagopuram. The Rajagopuram is built in the Dravidian architecture by the then Pandya king Parakrama pandian after getting the darsan of Kasi VISWANATHAR during his sleep. Kasi VISWANATHAR gave the directions to the king in his dreams.

Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is south-east of Pamban and is about 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath. Today only a few vendors and restaurants can be seen at Dhanushkodi during the day along with the ruins of the long destroyed town.

The shrine is known as Idukku Pillayar. The name Pillayar is one given to Ganesha (remover of obstacles and Lord of auspiciousness). The Idukku Pillayar Shrine is in the form of a narrow passageway between two columns. Legend has it that successfully crawling through the narrow tunnel from front to back gives liberation, whereas successfully scrambling through from back to front will fulfil ones worldly wish. In this river water will flow only rainy session. Near this river have one more big river that is called as kottaimalai river or karuppasami river and visit to this river we need to get approval from forest dept before one day visit. In that river water will flow 365 days. but Mutanki river water will flow only rainy session. I was visited along with my father.
