Guayaquil Travel Guide - Ecuador Unforgettable Moments

Guayaquil Travel Guide - Ecuador Unforgettable Moments

Guayaquil is one of the main South American ports in the Pacific. The climate is hot for the first semester of the year and breeze cool for the rest of it. A proud city of the tropics where foreigners are well received, music rules and seafood is a must. In the last decade, the city has undergone positive change. The beautiful riverfront promenade Malecon 2000 , green areas and modern shopping arcades all over the city attracts tourism from inside and outside the country.

The origin of the name Guayaquil derives from the love story myth of Tribal Chief Guayas and his wife Quil. The city was founded on July 25, 1538 with the name Santiago de Guayaquil by Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Orellana. Even before it was founded by the Spanish, it already existed as a native village of the Huancavilca tribe.

A plunder destination for pirates. In 1687, Guayaquil was looted by George d'Hout (English) and Picard and Groniet (Frenchmen). In 1709, the English captains Woodes Rogers, Etienne Courtney, and William Dampier along with hundreds of pirates, attacked Guayaquil and demanded ransom; however, they suddenly departed without collecting when the epidemic of yellow fever broke out.

Metrovia is a modern bus rapid transit system that runs mostly from north to south and east to west of the city. Within the city the local bus system is confusing but the locals will help you get where you want to go. You can also rent a car at one of the few places to rent just outside the airport. Prices range from $25 and up per day. Anyone with a drivers license from their home country can drive as a tourist in Ecuador.

There are about 20 malls in the city and Samborondon. Among the best places to shop:

City Mall
Riocentro Los Ceibos
Plaza Lagos
San Marino
Riocentro Entreríos
Village Plaza
Mall del Sol
Piazza
Three Supermaket chains (Supermaxi, MiComisariato & Megamaxi) are all over the city with superb availability for any need
Mercado Artesanal (An old building but definitely the best place to buy traditional souvenirs)

There are many traditional dishes in the range of seafood, white and red meats. Many with colorful names such as encebollado, seco de pollo, ceviche or caldo de salchicha. The traditional soups and stews this country offers are outstanding. The city has hotels for every pocket and decent hotel rooms can be had for around $10 a night.

Piedra Blanca is just three hours away, where one can take rainforest tours, rafting expeditions and visit local fascinating cultural sites. Other places that you can visit are the beaches at Playas which is about 90 minutes away, and the more popular Salinas beach which is about two hours away up the Via la Costa.

The picturesque barrio of Las Peñas, which perches over the river, anchors the city both geographically and historically, while the principal downtown thoroughfare Avenida 9 de Octubre funnels office workers, residents and shoppers into one hybrid stream. Amid revitalized squares, parks and massive urban-renewal projects, the city has a growing theater, film and arts scene and lively bars, fueled in part by several large universities. Note that all flights to the Galápagos Islands either stop at or originate in Guayaquil, so the city is the next best place after Quito to set up a trip.

Cuyabeno Amazon Jungle Tour - Ecuador in 4K

The Cuyabeno Reserve is a protected area since 26 July 1979 with an area of 603.380 square kilometers. One of the main objectives of the Cuyabeno Reserve is the continuous conservation of the Amazonian ecosystem- the most complex ecosystem in the world. This reserve is a complex of rivers, lagoons, and flooded forest. This protected area is characterized by its high biodiversity and interactions between the species inhabiting the area. The Reserve’s geomorphology is a consequence of the rivers carrying sediments and materials from the Andes, mainly by the Aguarico River.

The immense volume of water flowing down from the mountains maintains the naturally high water levels ensuring that the river is navigable all year round. In the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve there are 10 monkey species, 4 caiman species, 590 bird species, 167 mammals, 90 amphibians, 90 reptiles and hundreds of insect and spider species, along with an incredible record of 307 tree species per hectare. There are two seasons, dry and rainy. Access to the lodges are by fluvial (river) transport offered by the local indigenous communities coordinated by the lodge and a highly trained, accredited naturalist guide.

Day 1: We met in Lago Agrio at 9:00 am, where we we took a bus to the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve. At this point we will at the Reserve’s office and then board the canoe. Here our Naturalist Guide provides information about the Reserve, important recommendations and other tips to begin the two hour canoe ride down the Cuyabeno River to Caiman Lodge. During the canoe ride we got a first glimpse of the amazing flora and wildlife found in the jungle. You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the time and weather conditions. We arrived at Caiman Lodge at 3:30 pm. After a siesta we left the camp for a swim in the lagoon and to watch a beautiful sunset while also having the possibility to spot freshwater dolphins. We then returned to the camp for dinner and then we head out for a night walk.

Day 2: Day Jungle Hike in the Primary Forest where the guide explains the ecology of the rainforest, medicinal plants and flora and fauna interactions of the most biodiverse ecosystem on Earth. In the afternoon we went paddling around the flooded Igapo inundated forest around the Laguna Grande and in the evening we head out by motor canoe to look for caimans.

Day 3: We head out downstream to the Puerto Bolivar Siona Community and there we are welcomed by one of the indigenous woman and she took us to the yuca plantation to harvest some yucas and with our help she will show us the preparation of one of their traditions foods, Casave (Yuca flat bread). Immediately after this the guide introduced us to two of the last 4 Shamans of the Siona tribe in Ecuador and there one of them explained their cosmovision directly related to the Ayahuasca brew, he performed an energy cleansing part of the ritual singing their chants which come from a millenary Shaman-apprentice oral tradition

Day 4: Early morning birdwatching (5:30) and sunrise, breakfast at the lodge and at 9:30 return to the Cuyabeno bridge where we had a box lunch and then were picked up by a shuttle bus which took us to Lago Agrio so we can get back to Quito either by bus or airplane.

SEAFOOD Feast in Puerto Jeli EL ORO | Ecuador

One of the most famous places for seafood in Ecuador is Puerto Jeli in the El Oro province on the coast of Ecuador. It's home to one of the last mangroves in Ecuador. It has fantastic shrimp and crab too.

So if you think ceviche in Peru is fantastic, it's probably Ecuadorian seafood. There are a number of restaurants out here, but we chose a Picanteria Riberas del Pacifico. This is a family owned restaurant, over 40 years. It is known to have some of the most traditional, Ecuadorian seafood dishes.

First thing I wanted to try are the black concha or black clam. Don’t be afraid of the encebollado. Pickled red onion is fantastic.

Ecuadorian seafood soup or chowder is called parihuela. And it is kind of everything that you can get in the mangrove area: shrimp, black clam, crab, calamari, fish.

The marejada special. High tide. There are five different Ecuadorian seafood dishes on one plate.
Peruvian ceviche is not cooked, it’s actually “cooked” in the lime juice. Whereas Ecuadorian ceviche is usually like quick blanched first, and then marinated. So, if you're uneasy about eating ceviche for the first time, Ecuadorian ceviche is kind of like a safe bet. Because it's always going to be cooked all the way through.

Ecuadorian black clam ceviche. So instead the sweet corn, we now have the tostado so that is toasted corn. You also have it marinated in some of the clam juice. But of course you've got red onion, tomato.

And a classic shrimp ceviche from Ecuador. So, in this case, it would be cooked for a minute quickly. And then actually it's put into the marinade where it's continued to be “cooked” by the lime juice.

Chicharrón is just simply deep fried goodness. If you are worried about eating seafood in another country, this is the first place to start. Deep fried seafood.

Last up is the arroz marinero, which is basically seafood rice. So it is cooked with some seafood in a seafood broth. And it’s just like a tasty side. It's a great seafood rice. It’s a great side. Ecuadorians love rice, which was originally brought to South America by the Japanese and the Chinese.

Puerto Jeli is four hours from Cuenca. From here, you could go to the coast and it's just a really great place. Also, if you want to buy seafood, you know it's 100% fresh.
